Menace...oops... I mean Dennis...you reminded me that someone or something (?
) will take over your computer while you're on the phone with them and fix up your issues....and that's all I remember about it....sure wish I could buy more memory for my brain like you can get more memory for the computer!ok..I'm gonna go google " configuration issues".... CYL....

I only buy refurbs....refurb can mean anything from the Operating system was replaced, to a memory chip replaced, etc. and often something extremely minor.
Oldbroad it sounds to me like your computer is just slogging, that could be from trojans, adware, etc. Or an errant dll file or something ....... I just did a clean on 2 neighbors computers and they run like tops.
Can you give me the hardware specs and what OS is on it? Sure WISH I could run over there, I love fixing computers.
Download and use Malwarebytes, do a scan...first thing.

Can you tell me what error messages ect. you are getting or what it's doing?
If you are having issues with internet sites I would start out by making sure you have the lastest update of Adobe Flash Player and JAVA. If your new machine is up to date with Windows updates you could be experiencing an issue with a new version of IE (Internet Explorer), if it doesn't have the new Windows updates do those.

the place my friend uses is called iyogi. google "remote pc repair" or "remote pc diagnostic" some places sell an annual subscription. some offer one-time repair service.
there is also free software that can let someone take control of your computer to fix stuff. so if you know (and trust) someone who knows a lot about how to fix things, but they are far away from you, that is also an option.

i"m gonna have to veto this idea, hope you don't mind.
Never allow any software that you are not intimiately familiar with, remotely "use" your PC. (there are so many scam reports on ijogi on consumer reporting websites it would make your head spin....a subscription service run out of India, that you can never seen to be able to actually CANCEL and it renews on your credit card once you give your okay.)
Never download software unless you know the vendor/product, know the correct and secure site address associated with that vendor, and can verify that it is indeed, originating from them.
Look above at addresses when you are going someplace. So many people have had identity theft replying to Paypal w/out the https:// fall prey to the fake paypals that pop up with http:// address.....and do not realize they are no longer on a secure site becuase they have been re-directed.
(I used to be a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer..... until I let my certifications lapse.

some of the free remote connect software i've used comes from a shady outfit called Microsoft. it's built into most/all versions of Windows. i prefer the open source alternatives, however
Bitdefender and Kaspersky earn top scores for antivirus programs for over the counter retail programs among security pros.
BUT.........little sense to install antivirus on an already INEFECTED machine. W/out rescue disks or threat-specific removal tools, chances are you're going to have counter-attacks by malware and bots, which, if they have already gained a foothold, your antivirus won't even install, and if it does, and you didn't do a clean boot from a clean disk, then most of them can sense antivirus or firewall software and disable them---- hiding from the detection tools----so they won't work correctly anyway.
If you feel like you are in that situation then best take to a professional....they will back up your important files and email, and perform a newly formatted and clean installation of your operating system. Otherwise you might spend several days, and about 4-5 different antivirus programs, malware detectors, etc. while ripping your hair out and still not fixing your box.

Howdy all. Wasn't going to show myself as I'm swamped and don't need to do my procrastination today. But anyway, Howdy Fine REO Folk. I've sent Kaypers a PM offering to use Gotomypc to help troubleshoot her computer. It's secure and I've used it for years to help a few friends and family, remotely. It's the only way DH will log onto his computer remotely. It's just too easy for him to do it. And Kay knows she can trust me. I can walk her through the easy install of the program on her computer, via phone call, only I'll have the temp password, and when we are finished she can remove the program from her computer very easily. It'll have to wait till Sunday, though. Wish I could help others out but I'm just too time stressed AND I owe her a friend phone call, too. Hugs all, Feisty

That solves the problem pretty nicely.
I will say that MS Security Essentials works very well, and I have not had an infected system since the day it was installed.....and it's free. Independent testers in Germany, as well as PC publications ran it thru the mill and it came out with pretty durn good scores in the 98th percentile for detections as well as rootkit deletions.
I know people like to bash MS, but they do get quite a lot of things right....just like the USPS.
