My heart goes out to Dennis tonight since I just learned he had prostate cancer. Now I'm starting to wonder if I should get checked out because I've never had an exam and I'm middle-aged so it's weighing on my mind. I suppose two reasons I've put it off were because frankly, I'm just not prepared for more bad news right now (being oblivious to reality has its place sometimes) and for some dude poking 'n proding where the sun don't shine. Makes ya wanna say, "Hold up Doc, aren't ya gonna buy me dinner first?"

Pat, I felt the same way about a prostate exam until one of my best friends lost his dad to prostate cancer which has a high cure rate if caught early. It isn't a big deal. The doc talked me into getting a colonoscopy done, also not a big deal. Just do it and be done with it!

Thanks Johni 'n Dennis I'm going to schedule an appointment next week hopefully it won't cost me a lot of money either. As long as it doesn't take weeks and weeks to get the results, that's all that matters in the end.

You know, it's pretty cool that as a result of meeting some of you folks who live inside my iPad, I may save myself from more pain, poverty and disease down the road.

ETA: Darrel is just funning with ya'll. I'm 35 not 22 :p

i never click on anything in emails from people that i do know either, until i've thoroughly analyzed it beforehand.

none of my family or friends are anywhere near as geeky as me, so most of the exploits i receive are from them...

Few weeks ago DH had his online Yahoo account frozen. Bad news when you are traveling and have to depend on phone for email. He had opened a link in an email, on his phone, that appeared to be from Yahoo. Yahoo froze his account, for "suspicious activity" and he had deleted any emails from them for me to see what was going on. Luckily he did forward one email to me to get some idea for when called support to reactivate. I had to do a service call to yahoo and then ATT our provider to get it unlocked. (Yahoo tech was finishing his shift and I think the support closing for night. The Yahoo support was US based but ATT not. I had a lot of trouble communicating with off-shore tech and I knew what what info she needed. They would normally do a conference call, the three of us, but luckily I knew enough to do the call to ATT myself but only after he gave the the direct number to call. It's the pits that it's so hard to find phone numbers to many providers, banks, etc. to talk directly to human who can really do anything.) (AND I DETEST EVERYTHING BEING SO SYMBIOTIC NOW. NO WAY TO GET DIRECTLY TO ATT via phone; only email support!!!!) I had no idea why account frozen as he had deleted the real emails from provider(s). In meantime I set him up yet another gmail account so he could get his important emails until I got his account unlocked. It was a frigg'n hassle. I've set up Thunderbird so he can get emails on his computer without wiping them off ATT server but he won't use it. I guess it's up to me to do it for him when he's out of town. Almost impossible to get him to leave his recliner when he's home to get on his computer.

BE VERY CAREFUL DOING A SEARCH ON GOOGLE FOR LEGIT FREE PROGRAMS. SOME OF THE LINKS REDIRECT YOU TO SITES THAT WILL INSTALL A BUNCH OF OTHER PROGRAMS, MOST MALWARE. Unwanted browser redirection programs. All kinds of bad things can happen. I just removed VAF from DH's computer. Bad bad.

And his Win8 won't start up safe mode using shift+F8 (just F8 for previous versions) Had to find DOS prompt window on Win8 and how many peeps know to do a change directory so can run MSConfig???!!!! I put a classic desktop and simulated Start Button on for him but it doesn't have run command line in Start.

MS has hidden so many things in Win8. I'm still learning it.

Goodnight everyone. I have been dropping everything all day and am tired of it :(

So far i dropped 2 full juice bottles and my Reo Grand 2 times. The last time i broke the drip tip off inside the rm2. Keep dropping my coffee cup and everything has to be full when i drop it for some reason, smh Both hands are the same so switching hands doesn't work! I have a doctors appointment next week about my left hand being numb anyways so maybe it is something to do with that.

yahoo email prolly has this now as well, but on gmail i use the feature where you register your cellphone # to the account. any time a device with an unknown mac addy tries to login it sends a code to your cell which needs to be entered before you can log in. at the very least i know if my gmail gets hacked it's because i did something incredibly dumb on my own computer.

you are also dead-on about most refurbs being returned for silly reasons. a lot of companies have flexible return policies, and then the customer service department gets lazy about returning them back to the manufacturer. aeons ago, i bought several thousand hard disks from a company like that. most of them had been returned because of silly reasons and were perfectly fine. i made a small fortune. i may have bought maybe one new computer since. just refurbs for me.

i wish i had the same luck buying cars, but since i suck at that, i just buy new...

Why people just don't backup when things are running great so it can be loaded when things crap out I'll never understand.

I use Acronis manually and the dreaded Norton scheduled daily on more powerful home machines. Back up to networked RAID drives. I still don't feel secure. Network storage is even in fire/waterproof box. Then an occasional backup and carry HD off site. Used to use tape backup. Still have bunches of tapes and kept drives but probably won't ever take time to recover a lot of things from decades back. Have most of backups on old hard drives, too, that I pull when I give away or recycle old computers. Main things I want off of them are pictures. I'll have to say that Norton has served me well since Symantec in DOS days. Used to be some of the best software for getting maintenance done in DOS and early Windows. I did everything at DOS level for so many years. Things used to be so simple. I'm mind farting on the other products I used. Still have them on the Win95 Pen Tablets. Damn can't remember the name of company. Love it for ghosting, HD maintenance, partitioning, etc. xxxx Partition Magic, etc. Help me here folks.

do you only have one browser? before installing all that other stuff, you might try downloading Firefox or Chrome, and see if that helps.

even if it doesn't help, that will be useful info for Her Royal Feistiness

I do love Chrome. I can't get DH used to it but I keep it on his computer for when I use it. There are still a few sites that don't like Chrome. PhotoBucket loses some functionality with Chrome so I have to use IE for it. I have Chrome on my Galaxy Tab 2. So far it's not much better than native browser. Haven't put it on my phone yet.

If you had norton on there, and did the simple un-install, you didn't completely remove norton. That is the reason it is still slow. Norton is still trying to control everything on your computer.

I'll do a Norton cleanup on her computer, remotely, Sunday.

short version- yes...

i use MSSE on all my Win7 stuff (as well as my newest Win8 box, which i detest). i have a few XP machines floating around that use Avast.

i might actually have more computers than Reos, tho the day of reckoning is coming...

I have more computers than REOs and that is a lot of computers. That's including a bunch of Fujitsu Pen Tablets mostly before the LT C-500 but a few LT C-500. Most running Win95. Even have some other brands running Win 3.1 predating the older Fujitsus Don't even ask why I still have them. And off loaded a bunch of Internet Connected devices a bunch of us hacked to make them into real PCs. Still have a few Audreys and I-Opens and some neat-o Win CE devices with touchscreens. Won't list everything but horrendous amounts. At one time I had the Fujitsus around the property, in rugged cases, so I could see the security cameras from all over. This was before most peeps even knew there was such a thing as wi-fi. Used Proxim cards, routers, bridges, etc and longrange outside antenna. Very proprietary system. Only a bit geeky here.:D

I'm really hating Win8 especially trying to "fix" things on it. I had to install it on DH's computer to get the software for old, "new" video card I had around to work. Needed two DVI out when got him new monitor that didn't have VGA out. Other goes out to big TV. Could only get several versions of drivers to load into windows in safe mode. Last straw, needing to get computer finished was to try Win8 install. It worked.
