i have returned to silica for my main device, because it lasts longer. HRH likes cotton and i do too - but i can ruin it in a day. The birthday boy showed me how to make his favoured kind of setup, with a silica wick and i have managed 3 days with it - rinsed it out today and it's good.

Grand with an RM2. Top setup.

So how does the silica master coils differ than what you'd normally expect?

They wick about as fast as cotton but they are more durable - and they will tolerate a dry burn to clean a coil better than anything i have used except ss mesh. Bamboo i have heard about too - i used to use cotton yarn, but threading it thru a coil is not anywhere near as easy as cotton balls.

I think the reason i struggled before to make coils on it is that it was not thick enough, and if you tried a pin etc, then when you removed it the coil fell sideways.

What i am after is a good setup that will last me a week at a time. The bamboo sounds promising although i have never tried it.

So he's just doubling up on the silica and doing a usual wrap w/ 30 gauge wire?

I make micro coils about 9 wraps gives me 1.5ish ohms and use a piece of coil to feed the wick 2 pieces to make 4 strands going thru the coil seems good to me if the wick is too tight it takes too long to rewet takes about 4 minutes to recoil rewick I usually rewick every week but have been lazy lately

Dang!!! Hope you didn't end up inhaling the whole thing  J/K

Makes you wonder though, doesn't it? I just stopped and rebuilt one of my tank atomizers and that silica was all present and accounted for. Just disappeared in the chalice. However, I am going to try building just a coil without a wick and try vaping on it the next time I rebuild since it turns out that was what I was doing anyway.

I would think it would work well. I have some mesh downstairs but havent used it yet. Im so happy with my simple coils I'm using now

I noticed that cotton thread from the yarn after a couple days begins to unravel and lose its shape, hopefully bamboo will negate that. Otherwise its the ability to saturate well while squonking is what I need :)

Without a wick you may need to squonk too often and maybe get some harsh vapes. Unless some deposits from the silica was still stuck onto the wire it may have been helping to hold some of the juice. Try it anyway, I'm all for experimentation. :)

i think Commie tried an RM2 wickless and the conclusion is you will flood and burn the liquid. Or it was Super-X; they reverted fast to a wick!

T

Glad someone else bit that bullet first. I'll just stick to cotton in these little bottom fed rebuildables for the time being.

In my limited experience mesh is the only thing I've used that when you do a dry burn doesn't produce vapors by itself so I'm thinking when you vape with juice all you getting is the juice itself. There is something I don't understand is that after rebuilding a new coil it takes about 1ml of vaping before it starts to shine. May be that the coil needs a longer break in to start to fully become saturated

i don't recommend using blowtorched ss mesh in an RM2 - it discolours the juice. Popular opinion seems to be that you pulse the new coil on the mesh BUT NOT ON A REO - on another mod. That builds up a little oxidisation on the coil and stops it shorting to the ss.

I think a mesh takes about a day to break in if it is not torched. The benefits are it tastes clean but the throat hit can be fierce.

HRH does not like it, so i only make them on things i have to.

When i get some more money after paying for today's escapades by HRH - i'd like to give ceramic wicks a bash! I'm fairly sure i can ruin those too.
