I am having a big time shoe dilema myself. Spent a boatload of money at a runners specialty store getting fitted and they messed up my feet even worse than they were. Luckily they refunded y money in full. Working a full day on my feet on concrete at the store is giving me fits. I bought some good red wing boots during the winter and had just gotten them broken in but now its too hot for them. May wear them anyway tomorrow and put up with the heat.

They don't really make running/walking shoes for guys of my size/weight. I am going to try some Brooks shoes next in the motion control/super cushioned line but hard to make a good choice as very small selection in my size 14-15.

Why do nurses get the comfy shoes. They need to make some that are more manly. ;)

Let me say from experience your gonna need the Beast from Brooks or if you think you need a slightly less corrective shoe the Asics Kayano Don't scimp on shoes if your gonna try and stay healthy. Shoes make a HUGE difference.

Hi Ratman,

Not sure what the running store recommended, but have you looked into the barefoot/minimalist shoes already? I do alot of long distance trail running and switched over from traditional running shoes to minimal ones (little or no heel cushioning) a couple years ago. It is based on the theory that less cushioning is actually better for us and will train you to land on the mid forefront of your foot when walking or running. You redistribute your body weight more naturally than with a super cushioned shoe. Proponents believe that our bodies try to overcompensate for landing heel first, and that the extra cushioning distorts our natural foot landing and stride. You've probably seen the Vibram Five Fingers shoes everywhere. I like Merrell Pace Glove usually.

There's a better explanation of the theory about this online.
Much Ado About Minimalism | Running Times

It may not work for everyone, but it did help me eliminate some recurring running injuries (plantar fasciitis, knee strain, etc.) You may want to look into it before you get something with even more cushioning. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but it seems to work for alot of people. There's a popular book by Christopher McDougal called Born to Run, that you can probably get from your local library that kind of explains in depth.

The other thing is to make sure you aren't overdoing it when you go out. Not easy to do.
If you need a shoe for standing for long periods of time, I like Dansko's line of clogs.

You have probably already done this, but I highly recommend seeing a podiatrist and investing in good quality orthotic inserts.

Good luck on the shoe hunt!

Thanks for posting this. I've always wondered about the barefoot style...especially since I spent so much time in my youth without shoes on and loved it. Saw them pop up at REI a few years ago and have been fascinated. Just haven't taken the chance yet. And I've got Dansko's on my list as well. My MIL and FIL both swear by them.

I guess I'm happy you're happy folks but I'm stuck in the 90's and ya'lls sneakers look like futuristic spaceboots. I feel the same way whenever I walk by a Footlocker with $200 sneakers on display. Never do I feel old than when I walk by our Mall's food court.

Nevermind what I said, it's Thursday. I always feel old on a Thursday.

Thanks for the advice and info guys. The thing is I am not a runner and most likely will not be. Too many existing issues with knee, hip and vertebrae cartilage from my motocross days as a teenager for that. I need shoes that will not leave my feet throbbing with pain at the end of a work day from working retail on finished concrete floors. I am 6'2" and 270lbs. They do not really make shoes for people my size and weight. I have spent hours researching running and walking shoes. I do not need correction as I have a neutral step, no pronation but the motion control shoes tend to be the most heavily cushioned and my weight negates the motion control properties to give me more of a neutral shoe. At leas that is what my research suggests.

I am looking at the Brooks Addiction 10, Beast 13 and Trance 12 right now. I have already tried the Asics Nimbus 15 and Gel Venture 3.

I love the concept of minimal running shoes and would definitely consider them at some point if I was a runner but I do not think they would help me for standing in place and short waling trips to the stock room on concrete.

I tried on some of the Merell Jungle mocs and they are far too narrow for my foot. I have not been able to locate any in extra wide sizes locally.

Thanks Pat. Oh yeah the puberty thing is full steam here, lol.

 Holy Cow! I'm always amazed this time of year when everyone is getting out of school and our kids still have 3-4 weeks to go.
When do kids in ur area start? Here they start in mid August w/ 180 instructional days.
