In just over 5yrs I've not smoked 6769 packs of smokes(Over $30,000.00). That's why the powers to be are having a fit about vaping.
Yeah, cigarette taxes were straining the family budget so I started to roll my own. They closed that "loophole" & I started vaping. Now, guess what....

I find your posts informative especially regarding the stainless. I am still fascinated by the resistance rise of heated stainless. I have a USA Fire Meter and it is interesting to see how high the resistance will rise and rapidly it drops. (I am easily entertained.)
The two posts below raised a couple of probably foolish question. When you dry burn do you do the use the same heating method, short pulse to cherry until the gunk is burned? Do you rinse your stainless after burning but while still hot?

I set up ss coils about the same way as I set up kanthal. Very quick pulses at first. Them progressively longer, strumming the coils a couple times in between, until the coils fire evenly. I never heat the coils beyond cherry red. I don't ever prep the wire beforehand by heating and dunking.

316L will increase resistance as the coil heats up. That's true. But how hot it gets is dependent on the gauge wire you're using, the 'cold' resistance you're building to, and the level of charge of your battery. You could potentially overheat the wire.
I spent a good deal of my nearly 40 year welding career working with stainless steels of various alloys. The worst enemy of the integrity of stainless steel is overheating. The exact effect is too involved to get into here. But suffice it to say, the longer stainless steel is heated beyond the red stage, about 1400 degrees F, the more damaging it is. It begins to lose the properties that makes it stainless.

The cigarette bill for my wife and i was $400 a month

As single coil atties, i think the RM2's are unbeatable and i once had 14 of them. But if you want dual coils and all that jazz then it makes sense to LP your device just because of all the possibilities it opens up.

Thats cheaper than a divorce :)

Not foolish questions at all.
Yes, when I dry burn, I pulse until the entire coil, all wraps are cherry red. I do not rinse. I never have, either with ss or kanthal. Once cooled down, I prefer to brush off the coils, inside and out, with one of those little Dentek brushes, that look like miniature bottle brushes.

Here is a video of the process. Easy as pie. I bent a nail into a hook that goes into my drill. I spool off a 6' piece of wire, fold it, then twist. This process also greatly strengthens the 32 guage wire. I've never had one of these setups to self destruct.

Yes, I dry burn the coils every 2 weeks when changing my wick out. No problems at all.

Awesome!! THANK YOU very much!!
I did a little wire twisting when I did beaded jewelry, so I'm semi-familiar with doing that with a drill!
Who knew that might come in handy?
Thanks again, I'll watch the video!! :)

supertrunker, the monthly bill for me and the wife was a tad over 600 a month. Mine alone was about 450. Keep in mind that I was smoking 3 1/2 packs a day. Yea, you read that right. If I was going to a party I could easily knock down a half carton.
Wow. I'm sure your lungs thank you very much for switching to vaping. :)
You guys make my smoking habits look frugal! :)

T
No kidding.

That's a good thing though. :)

Yeah, guess they've started to feel the dent in their profits since so many of us are now vaping.
-----> (insert words not suitable for the forum ;) ) Hope they rot you know where!

I have those!!:banana::banana: Thank you!!!!

I should probably try to get a second RM2 for my old Mini.
Nothing else seems to be able to make contact to fire.
I would hate to not be able to use it if the atty dies at some point.
...or three. This just absolutely sucks that we have to think about every possible scenario, and purchase accordingly...I know, preaching to the choir, but geesh.

I just placed one last order for nic yesterday, I'm thinking of one more Reo. That would make two.
I really kind of wish I'd gone with a mini, but I bought all the extra parts for the LP Grand, so I'll stick with that at this point.
I just kick myself for not trying one years ago!

TwistedThrottle is correct and the limit on a vv Grand does not seem like much by today's standards, but what i like about dual battery mods is the battery life, though i concede that my old tech gear with 800 mAh batteries is obsolete.

When i used thin higher gauge wire for coils, it soon became apparent that dry burning them was a waste of time because they were intrinsically fragile. My standard coil of that time would have been a parallel 32g kanthal affair that hit 1Ω on some fat candle wick.

But it's possible to get a more robust coil by using lower gauge wire and so i typically build now with 26g and often Clapton it with 32g. It's always been faster to make new coils than to clean and dry burn existing ones. My experience has been that the lower gauge wire is a delight to work with because it's nothing like as springy.
So you wrap it and it stays there.
When i was using 32g one would have to blowtorch or apply a lighter to it just to get it to co-operate.

I did skim Rob's site last evening. I am a cheapskate, I guess. I won't spend $45 on a mod, let alone an Atty!!!!
your only other option would be to check out FT or look for Rm2s on the classies. It's not cheap getting started, but with Reos, building my coils and making my juice, I was able to go more than 5 months (maybe 7) when I had to, without spending a dime on vape stuff.

I'm a cheapskate also. That's why I now only have REO's with RM2's(6). I quit buying all the latest and greatest that seemed to let me down in one way or the other. So in the long run I'm saving money. Yes it was a somewhat large outlay for the devices, extra RM2's, and enough parts to rebuild them multiple times over, but compared to what I used to spend on smokes it's just a drop in the bucket.
Did I mention these are the least fiddly device that I've ever owned? I HATE fiddly. The twisted 32 coils lasts for months and months and the cotton yarn wick gets changed every couple of weeks. I vape unflavored.
I also like the fact that when you call, you get the owner, Rob. Not some switchboard lady or recording that keeps sending you in circles in hopes that you may get to speak to someone.

If I was going to a party I could easily knock down a half carton.
wowee......you must been burnin 3 in each hand!

yanno you need a few of em, and a couple more Reos! You can thank me later! ;) And ty for the bday wish :) Keep forgetting to say that.

Thanks, I have rinsed my last coil and will brush regularly.
don't forget to floss

I appreciate everyone's replies :)

I'll look more seriously for Rob's RM2. I've been perusing for the better part of the afternoon, and what's listed (at least through Vapecrawler) is discontinued or sold out (both)

I had a Chalice III clone that I got last year when I picked up a cheapy squonker to dip my toes. I broke it while I was taking it apart to figure out how it worked

(Yes, that's what I get for buying a clone, but I was aware of the risk ;) ) It seems the tiny atties are a thing of the past (Me want MOAR POWER). Yah, with the 15W limit, I figure I'll have to tootle, but I'm quite o.k. with that. I'd need a full-fledged Reo Grand (LP) to take it below 1.2-1.3Ω

I don't mind the cartos. I'm just sure I'd get better flavor with "build my own" :)

Thanks for the welcome and the advice!

I didn't realize you didn't already have a Reo.
I just thought you'd gotten a new style.

I'm new here as well. I've had mine for about a month.

Yay! Welcome to you too!

I recognize a lot of the folks here = I've been eyeing Reos for quite some time. A buddy PIF'd one to me ('cause he's an amazing sweetheart!) since he wasn't using it any more.

I have Vape ADD  I never know quite what I want, so I have all kinds of types of mods and toppers. I can tootle on a Nauti or blow klowdz with my Griffin. I want the ease of a tank, or to play with an RDA. I'm starting to dig into squonkers, and that kind of gives me the best of both worlds :)

Well, and I was too frugal to try much. Plus, I hate fiddly, and didn't want to have to make coils.
I made coils for the original Protanks for about 2 years, then went to cartos...then to RDA, then to the Reo with the RM2...(insert sound of squawling brakes) and that's about where I'm staying. I am keeping a KFL+ going, and have all the necessary back ups of those for doomsday...as well as a nice collection of the RM2s.

I just ordered my second Reo today!!:banana::banana: A copper vein LP Grand, and one more RM2.
That will make 6, so surely I'll be good with that number.
Yes, the cc's have been SMOKING the last two times, but I just pay it, and go on.
This will be the last of the stocking up, maybe just another tip or so.
But as of today, I'm officially done.

It's been a long time since i messed with tanks because nothing beats a bottom fed atty for flavour and juice delivery.

T
I agree!! :)

Really? Have you checked out the P67's? I'm pretty sure my next acquisition will be a Woodville...might even grab a mini. The squonking has got a hold on me. Still like my Kayfuns here and there though.

I never have messed with them much, other than a short stint with Kayfuns and Taifun GTs. It didn't last long. Mrs Rule uses Kanger SubTanks. But about all I do with them for her is change the OCC coil once in a while. I don't even make coils for them; although I'll probably have to eventually, because of the new regs. I save all the burnt out ones.

Oh, you'll have to. It's in the rules that you have to recoil everything, but not like the ones you or i make - oh no.

HRH uses 27g just to be bloody awkward and what's worse is she knows the difference between what i wrap for her and what i wrap for me.
i have fond memories of tanks that didn't leak, but they were rare.

We can always ignore the rules as usual.

I know, I was thinking of getting a Woodville. I even showed them to my DH, and he said "well I don't know why you don't already have one, those look nice".

I did look at the P67's. But, it's the same thing with the Woodville, I already bought all sorts of spare parts, loads of spare parts actually, for the Grand, so on top of all the other (massive) doomsday spending, I just kind of hate to grab a different device and start over again buying new parts...

The past few years, I'd never bought any of the nice RTA's, I was perfectly happy with my carto tanks.
So for the doomsday stash, I went with the KFL+'s, and a KFM3, I went the authentic route for a few reasons, but you know, well...that wasn't cheap either. ;)

It's okay though. I have solid things to go into these regs with, and I think my stash will be more than sufficient.
I just keep telling myself, "you won't miss what you don't know about".

The Grand is a little awkward in my hand, I don't have big hands, but it's like anything else, you get used to it.
I'd prob rather have had a mini, but I wanted the size for the 18650's, in case the other sizes ever become hard to get.

I don't know, I just had to pick a plan of attack and go with it.
But hey, you can't beat a LP Grand with an RM2, right?!! :D Even if I don't ever get to try the others, I'm still way better off than not ever getting a Grand...and #2 will be on it's way...as soon as Rob gets it packaged up and out with the mail. :D

I'll still use the Kayfuns...surely.  I mean, I'll have 'em if I need them.
