I can build a microcoil with cotton wick with the best of them, but I have never had an atty that required the NR-R-NR wire before. Some questions for the more experienced in this area:

What is the reason behind this wiring set up? Is it just to avoid burning the ceramic cup?
What would happen if I used just resistance wire?
If I buy these Kanthal ready wires, could I make a microcoil with it?

I would much rather just replace a bit of cotton rather than rebuild the coil each time.

Thoughts?

The NR/R wire method concentrates the heat entirely around the wick where it should be. It will also help to prevent any burning or singeing of the seal where the ceramic's base is seated. With these longer runs of wire, it's not good to have just R wire heating-up other areas of the device.

I was just wondering when you say a wire welder, do you mean just a soldering iron? If that's all you need to join the 2 types of wire together that is fairly easy, I would also like to know if you use solder, or do the 2 just melt together?

No. Search YouTube for TSAF wire welder.

+1 chad, I also believe Phil Busardo did an instructional video on it.

Yup. There's Todd's too. I'll just post that one. There are a lot of different ones on the market these days, but I think the TSAF is the original, and it's the one I bought.

I finally had a moment to swap the German silica I have been using for my preferred XC-116 ceramic wick. (kiln-treated per 3M specs) Mmmmmmm Mmmmmmm Goooooood! :vapor:

As I posted before, I find that cutting the wick close to the ceramic cup has been working the best in Sophia. The same was true with the Diver. I do use doubled 3mm German silica for holding more juice though, compared to the recommended doubled 2mm silica rope with the top piece clipped. A single piece of 3mm XC-116 works just as well, if not better IMO.

The German silica is more forgiving to become choked in the slots than the XC-116 in this regard. It is a loose braid silica which works VERY well in any ceramic cup atty I've used. I am sticking with the XC-116 however, due to it's durability, fast wicking, the need to use only one small 3mm piece, and the great flavor. I have used pieces in other attys for 7 weeks before with numerous dry-burns, and the stuff was still in good condition. :)

Sophia hooked-up with a new friend yesterday... The Hana Modz Pack V2 DNA20. :2cool: This mod is only the size of a pack of smokes, and built like a tank. The previous owner only had it for one day from the recent limited run, and decided it wasn't for him. Sophia is VERY happy with Hana. I'm not jealous at all.... Whatever makes her happy, makes me happy.

Here's what I wrote on Sophia in another thread. Thought of sharing:
That is TRUE
Between the Sophia, Diver and the Killer (all three Carto-RBA's) ~ get the Sophia. I have used them all and can confirm it is the best.

Why?
1. Made exceptionally well. Better materials, finish and build quality (similar, but higher than the Killer).
2. Vapes amazingly better than all three and definitely better than the Diver (double the VTF).
3. Flavor at it's best. Yes, in the 'taste' front it has beaten my Kayfuns (that 'pulsating' thing might be at it).
4. Never leaks. The juice control is a boon (and works at that!). However, I've never closed it yet ~ no drops too.
5. Adjustable Air-Hole. Yes, the air intake can be fine tuned thru the 510 screw (makes a subtle difference).
6. Easiest setup. No 'lining' of the coil vs air-hole. No guess work at length of wick ends. No cutting required too (does itself).
7. Pressure/Vacuum proof. Yes, it performs well whether the tank is full or near depleted.
8. Can be used without an external drip-tip. Has an optional built-in DT top tube, or a carto cap can be used on the stock tube.
9. Rebuilding can be done without dismantling the entire RBA from the tank.
10. Can be effectively used on both - XL and standard tanks. One size/device fits them all.

Here's my take on it at Leo's (the modder's) official ECF thread >Post#129<.

I've had my Sophia now for a few weeks and I really like it. I bought a AGR Locking Tank for it and it's been working great. I have been vaping thick vg juices w/ it, no problems. BB, GJ and some of Grumpies Juice. I can't be happier. So I have been using the Sophia for thicker VG juices while using my diver for thinner PG juices and it's been great. If there was anything to critique about both of these atty's, it would be to redesign them to be used using only resistance wire.

I think it would be awesome if someone could design a RBA in this style that could mount a coil similar to how The Rose RBA works. Other than that I am a Happy Camper w/ the Sophia and AGR Tank...!

Attention folks, I have announcement to make. Last evening I pulled the trigger on a brand spankin' new ΣΟΦΙΑ so the wheels are in motion, from Greece to Amish country, this could be a sign of many good things to come down the line. Maybe even world peace, but one step at a time.

Pictures will be forthcoming once she has arrived at my stoop. Bless you greek folks, bless you. You too Technonut.

Now back to our originally scheduled discussion already in progress.

I'm sure you'll be happy with it.. :) I've been at this game for over 3 years now. I was going through my thread subscriptions today to clean-up, and came across one from late 2010. The discussion centered around how revolutionary the upcoming 510 atomizer tank cartridge would be to vaping. Another, where we were cutting CE2 cartos to vape in modded syringes. Man, how things have changed since then. ;) Sophia is the "one" I have been chasing for years.. It actually works consistently, is easily rebuildable, and vapes very well.

I did manage to find yet another new, never used Sophia INCLUDING the long-body on the classies Friday night. I received it yesterday, along with a Kir Fanis Varadero carto tank from another deal. There were 2 punched cartos included, and instead of using the other Sophia, I threw a carto in......... Needless to say, I quickly emptied the tank back into the bottle, installed the silicone O-ring in the Varadero, and slipped Sophia 2 in. ;)

The KF Varadero works, but since it doesn't have a top fill hole, one cannot fill the tank completely when using the long body. I reached for a Slap Yo' Mama tool, then remembered the built-in DT. I needed to use a syringe. The bottom O-ring is nice and tight through, and the red silicone ring supplied with Sophia works well for using the juice control. I'm going back to the regular body for this tank.

I'll more than likely try to find another GP SnP tank. It's been perfect for Sophia. Dual O-rings hold Sophia's base quite well, and the dual fill holes with small O-rings for a good seal on the top cap are nice. I close the JC, twist the SnP's top cap, fill to the top in one hole while air can escape out the other, twist it shut, open the JC, and back to vaping I go. :vapor:

Techno you got that one? I wasn't sure if they'd have a change of heart. :)

Same one.. The member did think about it, then decided to go ahead and let Sophia go...

When it comes time to buy a new tank , if I can't find an SnP I'll be getting a Scuba.

Hmmmm... The Scuba would be another nice choice, and a littler easier to find in-stock than the SnP.. :)
