I have only soldered directly to a button top bat once. Not easy and a bit scary.

I would solder the paperclips and springs directly to the brass(?) plates, but I dont really get what you r design is, does the fiberglass box go between the plates? It looks like a matchbox with a sliding drawer.

BTW Bap, thanks for the recommendation on a solder station.

I followed your "Hakko" recommendation and I love it! It is so much better than both the old "American Beauty" or the "Weller" analogue stations that I have. I love being able to dial in the precise temp depending on which solder I am using. Now I just need to get some spools of solder "with labels". I have about 8 different bundles of solder, but none on a spool, so I am not really sure what I have.

Have you used anybodys tips other than the Hakko tips? Are there some other good options?

My American beauty is now relegated to melting foam.........

No, I have had good luck with the Hakko tips. I bought a tip assortment off ebay for around $10 a while back, and then got a decent assortment of Hakko tips with the SMT station I bought. (knock on wood) I haven't lost a tip since I started religiously using the brass ball tip cleaner. For me the iron comes out of the holder and into the ball, tinned, used for soldering, back into the ball, tinned, back into the holder. Once in a while I will use tip cleaner paste and the ball just to keep the tip very clean.

hi mike
the battery holder I am building is for the 18650 . it slides into an outer shell.
on the lipo I want to use the battery as it came and connect to the banana plug and route the wiring flat against the sides . now they stand straight up from the case.

Got a few FT orders today. Unbelievable, my first mechanical with a pinkie button, down right feminine if you ask me. Anyway I got this Origin to kick and really can't figure out this switch. PITA to turn it off and if I stand it vertical it fires continually. Very little or no spring in the switch.

https://www.fasttech.com/products/1547400

On this subject I have recently received the following mech mods....hcigar Chi You clone/FT Carevela clone/FT Origin clone/FT JM clone

And that is the order in which I rank them.

hcigar Chi You clone....I cant really find anything to fault mechanically. Esthetically about the only thing that bugs me is the slightly rounded edge on the male threaded end of the extension tubes. Switch spring seems to be about right and the lock is simple and easy. Being 23mm its a bit heavier than most mech mods, but that doesn't really bother me.

FT Carevela clone....The spring is a little weak, but after replacing the spring with a little stiffer spring the switch works flawlessly.

FT Origin clone....Like you said BJ the spring is week, there is also a little more side to side slop in the button then I would like. But in general I like some of the unique design elements of the switch. The lock could use much coarser threads IMO.

FT JM clone....It also has a very week spring. It is a simple design which is good. For some reason it just seems to be lower quality than the others.

In general they all seem to have more slop in the switches then I would like to see. They all have more switch travel than I think is necessary. Clone or authentic all these mods IMO share a design characteristic that I don't care for, and that is relying on a spring and/or contact to transfer the current. Also I prefer the progressive feel that magnets give a switch.

I will mod the switches I can to use magnets, and all switches will be modded to add two 10amp tinny spring pins that ride on the button shaft to ensure reliable current transfer regardless of spring or button contact (pics below).

Got one of these also, I think you recommended it. My 350 batt rattle in it so I had to put an Oring in it. I like the switch better than the Origin. Wish I had ordered the 18650 tube, but I doubt it will take a kick.:)

Bap, if you build it, they will come.

I hope you get the magnets sorted for your clones, that should be a real improvement. I agree admit that Italian mod, in reality it is a triple tube design, just one tube is from milled aluminum. Lots of work and precision went into it, but it is huge.

hi bap!
this a fantastic idea! build a magnetic switch ..love it but it was a nightmare to build. used a loop of desoldering braid to travel with the pushrod ..was thinking of using mabe a shell case to house the magnets ...have to use your idea.

This is the switch in my kicked side by side.....it gets used all day everyday and has worked flawlessly.

Bap, how are the pins holding up? Have you seen any wear and tear on the pin head from the friction of the button movement? Or is the brass softer than the pin?

I just took it apart and tried to take a picture, but you couldn't tell from the pic. They still look like new....time will tell I guess.

Aren't the pin heads brass too? Seems like an even match on the hardness scale. If there is no catching in the button action, the friction should be minimal.

Partially thanks to Bap and partially due to a lack of space, I've got plans to put a watch spring bar to use in a mod very soon.
