Is this true?

The NCR18650PD has been discontinued and the NCR18650PF replaces it.

Yes, the PF has similar specs, but is a different, allegedly more safe, chemistry.

I have had my PDs a while, I bought a dozen of them right when the HK Shipping crackdown started. There is also still some stock throughout the supply chain, however, if making a purchase today I would go for the PFs.

Thanks I am buying 4 and had a choice between the two. Will go with the PF.:)

Ok, somebody please remind me why Lipo bats are so desirable.

  • The two solutions below are roughly the same mAh capacity.
  • Yes, the Lipo is 25c, it can deliver 150 amps for a few seconds, just not sure when I would need that much current short of "spontaneous disassembly".
  • The PDs, or PFs, can deliver 20 amps in parallel, probably more current than I will ever need with this (or even the next) generation of RBAs.
  • A pair of PDs is smaller.
  • It doesnt seem like the energy density of Lipos is all that much higher than good high drain 18650s, unless you get into competition grade ($$$$) Lipos.
What am I missing? Why do I want to use the Lipo, other than I already own it?

But why, what is the advantage as you see it?

First.....until you found these holders I wasn't aware of a decent holder for either size or good contacts.

You are probably right when talking about your 25c 6k lipo.....however I am convinced all 18650 and similar lie about their specs more so than the lipo's. So there is probably more separation there then you think.

The c rating isn't only an indication of load capacity, higher c rating typically coincides with lower internal resistance. Both aspects go to help obtain a better discharge curve under any load. So even though vaping doesn't impart near the load an RC application does, it's still going maintain a higher voltage longer than something comparable with a lower c rating/higher internal resistance.

Here is my 6k (naked) compared to the 2x18650 holder. They are dang near identical height and width, the lipo is a little bit thinner. Side note is the holder seems to be working without the charge thing you mentioned, however the batteries read (on the same meter) 4.19 out of the holder but together in the holder 4.16????

I think that meter is a little flakey....I got different readings after I pulled the batteries and my dmm has them rock solid at 4.2v.....good thing because I was going to be ......!!! If my Xtar charger was acting up. However I never tested the holder with my dmm, before I removed the pcb and hardwired to the contacts.

This pcb looks a lot simpler than the series pcb Mike showed. So maybe it does balance somehow??? But once you remove the pcb you can easily separate the bays for a single holder or add some together.

I'm not sure I am fond of extra-circuits watchdogging the batteries like the DNA20 already is supposed to do, but if that board allows a regular usb-charger to manage 2+ cells, (in this case parallel, but their other holders are serial and made me mutter "OKR mod" a few times), then this is quite useful!

Maybe someone can definitively state Yes/No, (1,0) on this subject?

I think the specs clearly show that there is no balancing, based on the "Charging Voltage" spec listed. The specs shown imply a simple series charging scenario.

What is curious though is that they do show a "balancing voltage/current for single cell" spec, but it is blank. Makes me wonder if there is a premium model of this board that uses a different chip or something that does include balancing.
