Sadly, Miss Ems, one of them got the short end of the stick. One of the broody hens, who's been faithfully sitting on her eggs for the last 20 days, got kicked out last night by another hen. Poor girl, she did all the work of incubating them, and those eggs should start hatching today, and the other hen STOLE them! It will be interesting to see who "claims" them when they hatch. The "intruder" was still sitting on the nest this morning, with the original mother sitting off to the side, clucking sadly. Usually, they have to spend all that time sitting on the eggs to get in the proper frame of mind for "motherhood," and to be able to take good care of the chicks, so I don't know if this new hen will do the job or if the other one will snatch them back from her. We'll see. Meanwhile, the other broody hen, in the back corner of the barn, had two little fuzzy babies last night, and if any more are going to hatch, it should be today also.
A few years ago, we had one hen hatch out a batch of 8 or 10 chicks in the garage, and when she finally brought them out to join the flock, another hen chased her off and stole her babies. The "thief" was a proven good mother, though, having raised several batches herself, and she did raise the babies well. They all survived and grew up.So you just never know with chickens.
