BBC News - Gateshead doctor calls for research into 'e-cigarettes'

A doctor from Tyneside has called for more research into "electronic" cigarettes following the death of one of his patients.
It comes after an inquest recorded an open verdict into the death of Terence Miller from Gateshead.
Mr Miller, who used large quantities of the substitutes, had suffered from a lung disease - severe lipoid pneumonia.

Not great at all, people will look past that this guy was apparently using "oil" based liquid and just knee jerk with it. What supplier uses oil based liquids? I didn't know there were any, except maybe minute amounts in possibly clove or cinnamon mixes.

I explained that I would need to know how long the gentleman had been smoking for, and how long he had used an ecig before I could provide an accurate statement on behalf of ECITA Ltd. He said that he would make some enquiries and get back to me.

After a few minutes, a reporter called me to provide more information. She told me that the deceased gentleman had been using an ecig between October 2009 and June/July 2010. He stopped using the ecig after having respiratory problems, she said. He passed away in August last year.

The reporter confirmed that the deceased had been a heavy smoker for decades previously. He was 57 when he died.

Right, so the deceased had smoked for "decades", but using the e-cig for his last eight months was their matter for concern?
Don't they think that his smoking for "decades" killed him, and no matter whether or not he used an e-cig the damage was already done?
This is how agendas get their foothold on public opinion, i've been vaping for 21 months and i'm still here. Millions die worldwide from smoking annually and yet they choose the e-cig as the matter for concern because of the unfortunate death of one single formerly lifelong smoker? omg, the daggers are out.

It makes me laugh a little when everyone gets shocked over a 'possible' death due to electronic cigarettes... People seem to shrug off the fact that tobacco contains thousands of chemicals that we all know are deadly over time. Yet e liquid contains Nicotine, PG/VG and flavouring.

Not exactly a deadly concoction if you ask me.

Especially as one of the chemicals is already in a cigarette. (nicotine) So in fact your left with PG/VG and flavouring.

Cant wait for real tests to be done and slap everyone in the face when they find out its harmless.

The doctor just wants a bit of air time if you ask me.

That is my personal opinion of course and i could be completely wrong.

This is being discussed here:

Media and General News

Several threads about various aspects of it. This has received global coverage so we're treating it as a global issue - because it will hurt everyone. It looks as if the BBC were manipulated by someone with an agenda - but they should never have fallen for it in the first place.

I actually think this could be good for vaping and electronic cigarettes. At the moment we're thinking short term and the "ZOMG!" reaction from people. Think longer term when an investigation is done and they find out - he didn't die from an electronic cigarette, or at the very least shouldn't have done. This doctor is going to look very stupid for suggesting electronic cigarettes are bad for your health and so will media for suggesting it too. And they will probably back off from the subject altogether in case they screw up again.

How convenient eh !! Timing is everything and you must admit, these guys are quick off the ball .....

So they’ve already started moving things up a gear ..... this should come as no surprise to anyone (but of course it has ) ..... utilising “sympathetic” parties and “orchestrating” events is standard practice, together with media exaggeration/manipulation/fabrication ..... all part and parcel of a rollicking good smear campaign .....

Wonder what else they’ve got in store for us peeps, cos it’s gonna get (even more) down and dirty from now on ..... the 18 months they gave was just to buy time so they can move their chess pieces in to position ..... if they get enough ammo they’ll shut things down a lot sooner ..... hell, even if they don’t get all the ammo they need, they’ll just keep pulling further extensions out of their backside until they do !!

However I’m not worried in the slightest seeing as we’ve got a Grandmaster playing for our team ..... afterall, we’ve already won, right ?? Hurrah !!

True, the (bent!) Doc (and the poor deceased chaps widow) are not calling for a ban, just an investigation ..... which as you quite rightly say, should not be something we all scream Nooooooo! to .....

The problem is, (thanks to powerful vested interests!) E-cigs are highly unlikely to get a "clean bill of health" ..... at best they will turn around and say the results were inconclusive and that a full, bajillion year study, needs to be undertaken (which in all honesty, it does!) .....

Unfortunately, until that is done, they might (will?) decide to remove them from sale ..... it could happen dude ..... :-x

I think they missed the last bit of that docs name off it should have been allcock......and bull
Seriously he seems very mis-informed over e-cigs and e-liquids.
The gentleman in question smoked for decades and already had emphysema and thickening of the arteries, also did he smoke any fags at all while using the e-cig?
Chronic airways disease is what this poor fellow died of and thats what would have been put down on the death certificate if he had not touched an e-cig.
My mothers death certificate stated that as a cause of death along with a stroke and so did my grans along with pneumonia.
As for the oily residue what does this man think that as soon as you stop smoking all the tar (which is an oily residue) and other crap just goes overnight!!
Im still coughing up crap myself now after 6 months.
You can tolerate a total ignorant being clueless but a doctor!!!
I'm just glad i don't have to see him as my GP.
I guess they will be calling for ban next because someones e-cig fell out of a block of flats and hit someone on the head
