Anyone been using the Samara long enough to be able to comment how much it varies year to year?

I've been using it about a year and found no significant change. Just make sure both the paste and the concentrate are stored in air tight containers or bottles. I have a 30ml bottle of the raw paste and make my concentrate in 30ml batches.

Oops, I wasn't clear. I am curious how the absolute might vary from batch year to batch year. I very much like what I got and figure its from 2014 from my reading.

According to the vendor, each batch is different from year to year. They apparently test each new batch for integrity when they receive it. That might be the reason they suspended selling the stuff for about a month earlier this year.

Yes , read that. Because we are using it differently than a perfumery I'm just curious.

The last time I checked their site they included vaping as one of the intended uses. In fact I think they no longer mention perfume as a use.

Does anyone know if Mother's Milk makes their own TA, or do they buy it elsewhere? Nothing on their website answers that question one way or another.

They make there own TA. I tested it and evaluated it when they first introduced it. You can read my review on it right on there product description page.

Absolutely loving the samara still. Rather ruined me for tab flavorings I'm afraid but that is just fine since I'm so darned picky. Liberating about 50 bottles of meh feels good.

Only drawback was the sweetness but I tried bitter wizard and it is just perfect. A scant drop in 10ml for a first test and great results. Sweetness cut without affecting the flavor notes I love in the absolute.

My order of Rustica TA (Samara) is due to arrive in a couple of days.

The only PGA that was available is the 151 proof (Michigan). I picked up some of that today.

My plan is to mix the 5 ml of Rustica paste, in 45 ml of 50/50 PGA & PG. That should yield 50 ml of 10% solution.

I can then add that solution to my recipe mixes in 1 or 2% increments to suit my taste. I'll start at 1% and work my way up. if necessary.

Any holes in my plan or formula? I've never used PGA in any of my mixes before. Does it require any cap off / air time, while steeping?

Thanks

Since you have 5 ml of paste, why not experiment by taking 1 ml of paste and mixing it with PGA alone - in equal parts, or perhaps 1 ml of paste to 9 ml of PGA. You can then compare the result with other mixing methods. If you are unhappy with the results, you've lost nothing; just add pg to the mix until you achieve a proper mix. Someone mentioned in a previous post that they only use PGA to dilute their paste; although theirs was probably 95% PGA.

Thanks. I only chose the 5ml / 45ml ratio for my bottle of solution, because it seemed like the easiest. From what I gathered, it seemed like the biggest PITA with the paste, was getting it warmed, or runny enough to handle it, and get an accurate amount into the solution base, to start with. I just figured doing it once was the path of least resistance. Of course, doing it that way, I'd be assuming Samara's 5ml amount is accurate to begin with. Another variable to consider..lol.

I suppose I could figure out what they sent was actually 5ml. They list the specific gravity as .92 - .94. Weigh their bottle before & after emptying it, and the difference divided by the specific gravity, should give the volume (ml)...I think.

I can see the merit in using a smaller initial quantity, for later adjustments. I thought I'd just adjust the percentage added to the final mix, if necessary.

I guess I'll just have to see how difficult the paste is to work with, and make a decision at that time.

The 50/50 PGA & PG was from Danny's post on page 2:

"as a side note a base of 50% PG and 50% PGA works the best. Otherwise you may get a cloudy mix due to the poor desolving of the TA materal into the base."

Too many formulas making my head spin..I'm on the north side of 60. I might need a slug of the Everclear (yuck) :)

I heated mine in hot water and it was fairly easy to pull out with a 1ml syringe. Since you're going to use the entire 5ml bottle, you might set aside some of the 50/50 to use as a "rinse" to get every last drop. I would heat that too and "rinse" it several times.

When I turned 40, I gave myself permission to grow up. When I turned 60, I gave myself permission to grow "older". ;)

It doesn't really matter if the amount paste is off by a few points, or whether your final solution precisely a 10%. Whatever % you end up with, you will know from experiment how much to use in your final mix. So, I'd say just mix the best you can, and test.

Edit: I just ordered Everclear online from a vendor who most likely will ship to your state. Price is $19.99 for 750 ml's plus shipping. I paid $18 for shipping to CA but you probably will pay less. If you are interested, you can send me a message.

D Doug, I'm with Exchanger. Leaves room for experimentation. Reading the process using pg blends, I opted for easy peasy and used 80 proof vodka. Mixing was a breeze after warming the absolute. Of course shaking before each use is required.

I mix @ 3-6% and find it very yummy all by itself. It will be interesting to see your take on it.

Fyi- dedicate a bottle & syringe to this stuff! You'll never get them clean again. ;)
