It gonna be tough to get a 1.5 ohm build using 28 in a kanger RBA(subtank RBA fits the toptank). Your going to have to make a 3.5mm ID coil with 5 wraps and its a tight fit between the posts. I make my wife's clapton builds using 28/34 with a 3.5mmID and it comes out to 1.4ohm. Using 30 gauge would make a smaller coil, less wraps and easily make your 1.5ohm range. I don't know about 29 gauge since I have never used it.
If your going the 28 gauge route then your going to have to thin the tails out using either cotton or rayon cause with a 3.5ID build the tails are going to be massive and thick. The thinning has been described before but I'll repost what to do if you don't know.

edit.... my coils are all spaced, not wide but just barely enough that the wraps don't touch. I don't do micro/contact coils.
The calculator seems to imply 7(3mm) wraps with 28g...That does seem tight so maybe I'm better to start with the 30g...And I do believe Ol' Trig is gon'a be spending some time in YouTube Land :D

IF...I was to buy some wire to attempt to build a coil for the TopTank Mini I DO NOT Own(yet)...What gauge wire should I get aiming for about a 1.5ohm coil ???...Never is a very long time...:D
I would recommend 28 gauge.

I use 26 gauge but then I'm a sub ohm'ing tootle puffer.

Sorry about that, I was being literal. It's Friday and this week has been a very long year for me!
The spaced coils tend to be easier because there are virtually no hot spots (or at least there shouldn't be) and allow for a slightly increased contact area between the coil and the wick.
Thank you! I just didn't know if it made a big difference in vaping.:)

You don't know until you try it and find what works for you.

I have 1 1\2 hands and can build my Kompact Kayfun in 5 minutes or less. That is wrap the coil, install coil trim leads, dry burn the coil, wick, and prime the wick.

Now that i have these new screws in the deck thanks @ToolmanTexas i can probably shave 60-90 seconds now i dont need 10-15 tries to trap the first lead.

Thank You Both !!!...And especially to you Your Highnessness for the vid you posted last night...Shawn re-building a coil in about 3 minutes...I think even I could do that...:lol::lol:

Either 26 or 28 gauge. All depends on your target resistance.

I like .8 ohm so 8 wraps 2 mm ID gives me .78-.82 every trip of the train

That Calculator is a very handy little tool...For a nice "Cool / Flavorful" vape for a Tootle Puffer like me...What's going to be my best 1st choice in wire "type"...And easiest of course :D

Correct. Wrapping coils is the easy part. Installing tge coil and right amount of wick takes experience

Careful there grasshopper! Shawn has a bit-o-sperience under his belt! He MAKES it look easy. Just be aware that it looks a little easier than it is at the beginning, don't get frustrated. Coils are easy, once you get the hang of it, even I can do it. VapeTool is an Android app. a bit more intuitive than Steam Engine. Steam Engine, a great tool, can get a bit overwhelming. If you plan to TC, then SS wire (316L) is your friend. The advantage is that you can use SS wire in either TC or power mode. Spaced coils are easier than contact coil. 28 and 30 gauge wires will serve you well.

Just thinkin a bit and its a clapton coils I use thats much thicker than just a single wire build so you prolly could use 3.0ID with more wraps. A 3.5mm 28/34 clapton is quite wide. Its been so long since I've built with a single wire that I would have to build one to give a decent spec opinion.
One of the problems that I came across when I was using 32 gauge but not as bad with 30 gauge is the more times you dryburn then reuse the coil the weaker the wire becomes, it begins to distort real easy trying to rewick especially with rayon that has to be packed solid in the coil, maybe 3 or 4 rebuilds before some noticeable wire degrading. The 28 gauge is so much more robust and can take the repeated rewickings. Claptons even better, I got some clapton builds that are many months old with plenty of rebuilds done and still going strong.

ummm. Isn't the 20 gauge more for self injection than filling something? Not criticizing, just wondering how long it takes to fill a tank with something that small. I use 14 gauge luer lock needle and can fill a tank in seconds even with heavy vg.

:)

Sorry, S&S - I missed the question earlier. I didn't intend to ignore you - apologies.

Regarding speed, basically as fast or slow as I want/need. Sometimes I leave them intact, in which case they're relatively slow. For things like the Billet Box, that's a good thing.

Some I snip just a BIT off the top. Depending on how much, it can be as fast as an open bottle.

Basically, there are no "right" or "wrong" tips, since each of us have our own semi-unique needs. Because I need the range (slow to fast), I find that the pink (20g) ones work best for me.

I should also point out that I don't use high VG juices, which is very relevant here. 65-75% PG is good for me.

10-4...I think I'll still try both & see...I'm sure I'll have more than a few "Chuckers"...Try again please !!!
The problem is not the "chuckers" as you call then, we all have our share of them. I could venture in saying that my best coils ended up as chuckers. You see, there was that one little, tiny, small...tweek I just had to make....in any case, what I wanted to make you aware of is that putting too much cotton wick could result in dry hits.

Contact coils aka micro coils the wires touch.

Spaced coils do not touch. Its said that spaced coils dobt gunk as fast.

I always build micro coils.

What is the difference between space and contact coils?

Cotton wick you want the wick tight but still able to slide in the coil. When saturated witg eJuice the cotton will swell and fill the coil perfectly.

If you have it so tight when the cotton expands you will get dry dry hits abd burned cotton. SOMETHING YOU DEFINITELY DONT WANT.

You do pass it thru the coil, but make sure you have a very slight resistance as you pull it thru. Rayon is a bit more forgiving in that respect.

I would go 28 instead of 30. 30 us thin. And coils are easily wrecked if tge wick must go through the coil.

I always use 26 gauge so tge coil is strong enough to be rewicked and dry burned time after time. But my coil lasts about 3 months.

The calculator seems to imply 7(3mm) wraps with 28g...That does seem tight so maybe I'm better to start with the 30g...And I do believe Ol' Trig is gon'a be spending some time in YouTube Land :D

True for vertical coils. Horizontal coils the wick goes through the coil
Generally true that vertical coils have the wick wrapped around the coil and horizontal coils have the wick through the coil, but I have used an atty which has a vertical coil and the wick goes through the coil (genesis style), and horizontal coils with the wick wrapped around the coil (case in point, the trico coil) ;)

But generally true :D

yeah I have seen vertical coils in all types of configurations.... some with the wick wrapped on the outside and some with the wick on the inside.
