I'm not sure that's true for everyone. Take Muslims, they think of the less fortunate during Ramadan, etc. (You are supposed to total up your assets and then give a percentage to the poor). Besides all that, there are folks who think of the less fortunate at other times. My sis is an atheist and she will give when she can as do many others and I think it's admirable.
We donate to the Salvation Army all the time when it's just as easy to dumpster it, I have done volunteer work at the VA, and etc. I think that blanket statement isn't true but it may be true that at Christmas SOME people find it a time to think of the less fortunate, and certainly perhaps donations go up. So there may be some truth to it, but not always.
