I wish Christmas came 2-3 times a year because Christmas is the ONLY TIME of the year people think of those less fortunate.

my sister HATES Christmas if she is in a store playing Christmas carols she is looking for a back door to get out of there in minutes

I'm not sure that's true for everyone. Take Muslims, they think of the less fortunate during Ramadan, etc. (You are supposed to total up your assets and then give a percentage to the poor). Besides all that, there are folks who think of the less fortunate at other times. My sis is an atheist and she will give when she can as do many others and I think it's admirable.

We donate to the Salvation Army all the time when it's just as easy to dumpster it, I have done volunteer work at the VA, and etc. I think that blanket statement isn't true but it may be true that at Christmas SOME people find it a time to think of the less fortunate, and certainly perhaps donations go up. So there may be some truth to it, but not always.

fair enough. a lot of people do a lot of good.

Lets now draw the focus in. how about these self absorbed 20 and 30 something's walking around in designer clothes with an iPhone stuck in their hip pocket. I just saw way too many self absorbed people at Wal-Mart (Broadway and Randolph Way in Tucson ) yesterday while getting supplies for my Apartment.

when I can i make donations to women's shelters and Saint Elizabeth (division of Catholic Charities). I also donate my time At the Armory Park Senior Citizen center.

I think it takes some age and wisdom to start thinking of others... And don't forget we've entered the realm of "everyone gets a participation trophy" and whatnot. It takes extra parenting these days to get kids thinking of the less fortunate, we made the kid do his fair share of volunteering (apart from what was mandated, LOL) and never let him accept a participation trophy. Thinking harder, actually HE wanted to volunteer at a cat shelter, and would regularly donate his pocket money to either an animal welfare shelter, or even friends he found on the internet who were in less fortunate circumstances, but he was raised right. But if everyone is on an "equal" playing field in many person's eyes thinking of the less fortunate is harder.

Again, this is just my opinion but I have found that certain generations aren't really "taught" that there are winners and losers, and that we should aid the less fortunate, if everything is supposed to be a level playing field... I made the kid donate some of his toys the first Christmas me and the ex were separated, we did the obvious "try to outdo each other with gifts" and it was really bad. He was like, 3? But after he opened his "last" present (about 45 minutes after everyone else) he said, "That's not enough, I need more."

LOL, we headed straight to a donation center in response to that statement, and I never overbought again. I was trying to head off his addiction tendencies, LOL, but honestly it was a good lesson for him....
