I am really really upset that noone has even mentioned Brian May in here. Shame on you's!!
I'm a fan of blues rock guitarists Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule), Derrick Trucks, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
I'm also a fan of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Allman Brothers Duane Allman and Dickie Betts.
The list could go on.

All those listed are excellent but my vote for the best of the best is Mark Knopfler. Just the cleanest player I've ever heard.
It was really late and I couldn't remember his name ...he was definitely in my mind though ...and I do of course agree!

I'd just like to toss Adrian Belew out there for consideration. The amount of stuff he's played on that most people are unaware of is incredible. Zappa, Bowie, The Talking Heads, King Crimson, and many more. The guy is incredibly inventive and his solo work is incredibly diverse.

That's Kinda hard to say because Music spans such a Wide range of Genres. And Technical Expertise is Many times Trumped by whatever I'm into at the current moment.

They are the Usual Suspects. But here is someone that might not have been as Popular, but I think deserves to be Very High on any list of Guitarists.
And that would be Joe Satriani.
And here is Someone that I just Really Like to Listen to, and that is Larry Carlton.

The G3 (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson) Tour must have been Smoking Hot!
4 fingers and a thumb beat a pick any day! Yep, Knofler is impressive. Did you catch his recording sessions with Chet Atkins a few years ago?
