If the internets are to be believed, 2 gig ram, quad core 1.4 GHz 5 MP camera with dedicated chip, expandable memory, 1280x 800 125ppi etc etc.

If they release it with good connectivity options (USB 2 would be killer) then I'm getting one. 2 GB ram is awesome consisting everything else has half that.

the problem i have with unconfirmed tech specs: they change quite a bit most of the time...particularly i thought the product was initially announced as a dual core....also i think if they add USB they should go USB3....as its just more logical being the next step....only other thing i could think of is if they dropped a second slot in for dual micro SDHCs for insanity-level storage capacity

The world is headed toward wireless and small devices. Desktops are dwindling and tablets are growing. I kind of hate to see the desktop for gaming dieing out, but that's life. Upgradeability is definitely on the side of the desktop, but we all are on the move these days.

Dave, I gotta ask my son about the desktop thing with gaming. He is really into games. So much so that about six years ago he bought a PC because Macs didn't cut it for gaming. I know that when he worked at VMWare awhile back making software so Macs could do PC stuff, he made sure the gaming support was really good.

I'll ask him whether he thinks the desktops are the best for gaming still. I have a feeling the answer will be yes.

Desktops will always be the best for gaming. Size = power/expandability.

Gaming on laptops is only very recently viable...and even then, a laptop can't compete with a desktop in terms of performance.

I don't game anymore, but if i did, I'd build a gaming desktop.

90% of people who don't game can get by with a tablet or Mac...for them a computer is just an internet and media device, which is basically what tablets, phones and Macs are.

desktop is the way to go for gaming on a PC, and you don't necessarily need windows, you can VERY easily use WINE in linux to play most windows compatible games...and most major companies are embracing mac more now, i know blizzard comes to mind, although i hate them with a burning passion, i know their software is mac compatible though.

He prolly uses Linux then. When he was in high school he worked for debian linux. When Red Hat went public they all got stock. Nobody knew he was a high school kid ;)

The product he made was called VMware Fusion - I know he was really concerned with it being good for gaming and foreign language support - dunno if it still is, he's been gone from there two or three years.

Using a Mac for gaming is like using a screwdriver to dig a hole. Not upgrade friendly = no point (unless you play fire and forget games)

Doc, you know, I just don't understand why that is. Why is Apple so restrictive for game and other software developers? It made more sense when Jobs was alive -- I get it that he micro-managed and did a great job coming out with beautifully designed products and stores. Now it makes absolutely no sense. Apple does not seem the same anymore -- not that I trusted it implicitly before, but I trusted it a lot more when Jobs was at the helm.

The desktop is definitely the best platform for PC gamers. Being able to plug in the latest CPU that your board supports and choosing the video card that will give you the best frame rate is the name of the game. Laptops are so proprietary that it's almost impossible to upgrade without changing the motherboard to a gaming motherboard and that only happens within the design framework for the manufacturer who made your laptop. New ones get thinner and old ones won't accept parts from the new ones.

Give me a standard desktop case and I can build it to anything I desire. The standards that drive PC hardware demand compatibility with each other. If I need a new power supply to handle my new parts, the bolt pattern and connectors plug right into any case and motherboard I choose. If I need pigtail adapters, I can get them, too. Chances are they come with the supply.

usually back to school sales go in effect like....around now...next big sale for cell phones is going to be holiday time....cell phone companies have three major sales per year on average: spring, back to school, and holiday time....like clockwork...best thing to do is sign the contract during one of these times so your upgrade comes at a time when the new sales/devices come in

IMAG0001.jpg

first off, excuse my obnoxious clutter of change and books on my nightstand, secondly to clarify: the one on the left that is obnoxiously large is of course my 1000 mAh eGo twist rolling with the excalibur 2.5 ohm clearotank, in stainless with a stainless drip tip....the one on the left is my 1000 mAh KGO with the excalibur 2.5 ohm clearotank, both in chrome with a clear plastic drip tip...if you're wondering, i'm vaping on DFW vapors camel in the KGO (my everyday vape) and i have DFW vapors SLURM in my twist, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite flavors....along with brawndo from DFW
