I need some clarification....Will my Verizon GS3 be receiving Jelly Bean or do I have to root and flash it myself?

It will....when is the question. Rooting, of course you could have it now.
I thought I've seen a couple of VZW leaked builds, so I can't imagine it being too far off.

Just like vaping, there is alot of information you need to know before diving in and installing custom software/firmware on your phone.
Once you get a good idea of what you are doing, it's pure customization from there...just like vaping!

Sweet, thanks for sharing. I rooted and installed a custom rom on my HTC G2 when I had it. That was such a good phone! I have also successfully rooted and flashed ICS to my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to that stuff though and I would hate to brick my GS3 because I lovvvvvveeee it!!!

Oh you've got it down pretty good then. The only thing I would read up on the GS3 is how they are using K-EXEC to walk around the boot image, if you decide to "unlock" the bootloader as well. They have the stock image available if you soft brick and need to ODIN back now.

I dont understand what unlock the bootloader means? Whats the benefits?

Unlocking the bootloader is "true"root...as it allows you to flash radios, firmware, and custom recovery (which allows a FULL backup of your device)...super user access allows you to use root apps...but unless you have an unlocked bootloader...you will not be able to flash roms, which means you'll essentially be stuck with your current Android version and interface until you unlock the bootloader

I'm the geek type who isn't afraid to format and reload anything with a storage drive. Flashing a motherboard or video card BIOS is something that makes perfect sense to me. I was modding computers back when Radio Shack computers were cutting edge, but what happens if you brick a phone and take it back to a Verizon store for help? I think that's what people are wondering. Does the service provider care or will they just re-install the stock image? There's always the fear of them saying "You violated your contract and we won't touch it anymore ... we will sell you a new phone for $300, though".

at the point it is "totally bricked" the device won't turn on....and the store will NOT be able to figure out how to fix it, and give you a new phone....i've only bricked TWO phones ever...and this was the result....and i've easily rooted 100+ devices for friends/colleagues/etc.....however, if you soft brick, and the phone just bootloops, i wouldn't bring it back to the store....as that would void a warranty, and you can probably fix it, most "brick" situations these days are totally fixable, especially if you have a dual-booted machine with ubuntu as a second OS

Let me straighten that out. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to boot to an insecure boot image where you can load custom kernels and certain firmware. One of the biggest advantages is having access to fastboot commands. On most Android devices (95%+) you can root to allow custom recoveries/ROMs/apps which also includes different versions of the OS.

The bootloader on my Droid X was never unlocked, yet I had all the things described above including upgrading to Honeycomb eary, minus a custom kernel and certain radios.

I myself will wait it out when JB is released.. Battery life right now is great on aT&t and I'm not about to take my s3 the same route as the epic touch in terms of piss poor implementation ... Spare battery will be here in a day or 2 but I really like not having to charge a battery twice a day.
Not streaming music continuously gets me 14+ hours a day so I'm almost perfect.
Wonder if google now is gonna make it's way to the s3. To me it would seem to get in the way of samsungs S-voice..

I get great battery life too. Its interesting because I switched from Cricket and I had a Samsung Transfix, which is also an android device but is signigicantly smaller than the S3 and it got HORRIBLE battery life!!

There's a number of factors why the s3 for me gets better battery over the s2 and the networks at least in my case are the main reason. Going from no service/roaming to decent service and sometimes amazing helps battery. Flagship phones need amazing battery imo or they are just crapware.
If only Verizon for you and att for me didn't cancel the drop box promotion we'd have perfect phones.
What color you get?
Case or no case?
I'm rocking a white with a otterbox defender atm but looking at slim cases on amazon for off work times.

I have a Marble White as well with a Boxwave Colorsplash w/ a kickstand. I really like the case, it's not bulky at all and it still offers great protection! With that and my Zagg, Invisible Shield HD I am good to go!

I just pick up a refurbed Asus transformer 10.1 tablet w/dock from newegg it's pretty sweet. I rooted it and put on jellybean but ended up going back to a rooted over clocked stock ICS rom because I like Asus's keyboard

Ahhh love newegg. Been shopping there for years upon years.
No way to just download the asus keyboard to your device?

I hear you on that, Dave, that's my fear of rooting too. By the way did you have a Radio Shack TRS-80? At work, we had the Zenith equivalent of that, the Z-80. We upgraded to Winchester hard drives. I am not kidding here, the discs were the size of dinner plates, and each one had........hold onto your hats here.....64K.

By the way, each one of these three office computers cost around $6000.00. I learned CP/M so I could customize database programs with WordStar and DataStar. I could pretty much do anything I wanted to with these computers just by changing the machine language codes. Fun times.

At one time I had a TRS-80 Color Computer, a Xerox CPM computer with dual 8" floppies and dual 5 1/4" two sided drives, a Diablo Daisy Wheel, and a 200CPS dot matrix! Talk about early cutting edge! I later moved up to MS DOS 3.1 on a new PC and bought an HP Laserjet III. I finally installed WIndows 3.1 on that one and it was so slow that I always just booted into DOS and ignored Windows until I bought a tower with a faster processor and more memory.

This was years before Al Gore invented the internet. My first association with the internet was in text mode with menus. :D

Yeah, me too. Something called Q-Link. It was the Compuserve for Commodore 64 owners ;)
