Wow!! I can't believe my little post created such a debate.

My 2 cents:
From my vaping experience (about 3 months), I wake up every morning with the worst dry mouth. Now I have to admit while vaping at night, I also drink a few glasses of wine. BUT I always had a few glasses of wine while smoking the analogs and never experienced the "dry sponge in the desert" mouth since vaping. Not a big deal I just have a couple of glasses of ice water in the morning. It's like putting out a fire and feels sooo good!!!. I also am constantly drinking water throughout the day.

I also have to admit that in my younger days I drank (alcohol) A LOT and it is the same dry mouth I experienced then (minus the hangover)

Bottom Line:
You quit or cut down smoking the cancer sticks and will never have to go though life with a tube in you nose connected to an oxygen tank on wheels.

You are drinking more water which is icing on the cake and may prevent additional medical problems

Love you all
Alan

OK, from a scientific standpoint PG and VG ARE going to make you FEEL like you are dehydrated with anything they come in contact with. In other words, they are very likely the cause of your sore throat, etc. Will they cause dehydration? The answer is no. However, the minimal amount of fluid that is absorbed is likely to INCREASE the FEELING of dehydration by people whose water intake is ALREADY lacking.
I haven't been able to find anything scientifically to back this up. I you have a link to any information I would love to see it. Seriously. As for the last sentence, I tried to make that point in one of my earlier posts, where if someone is low in water content, symptoms of mild dehydration would most likely be increased.

In other words, vaping is NOT going to cause you do BE dehydrated. But it CAN and WILL cause you to FEEL like you are dehydrated. I am just applying the known properties of VG and PG here. The physical affects of vaping on the body can only really be answered properly by a medical doctor. Which I am obviously (judging by the lack of fast cars, mansion, etc) NOT!
I'm sure we all agree at this point that vaping will not cause one to become dehydrated (which I would equate to moderate or severe dehydration).

In this case, I really think BOTH sides are saying the SAME thing here. We KNOW that vaping will cause you to FEEL dehydrated if done without adequate water intake. We also KNOW that it will NOT cause you to BE the clinical definition of "dehydrated." You're both right!! However, if you are already dehydrated (which according to the clinical definition, most of the populous IS due to lack of sufficient water intake) PG and VG CAN exascerbate the issue in that it will make you FEEL more dehydrated.
Here is my only issue with all of this. I have been unable to find anything that relates to PG or VG producing a feeling or sensation of dryness. The earlier example about mints was made where it makes the mouth feel cold, which is easily explained, and here is just one of many links that explains the phenomenon. But with anything that causes a feeling or sensation such as a menthol mint, it dissipates naturally as the stimulants are flushed by saliva. I still have saliva production, in fact it seems to be increased when I vape. Dry mouth as a condition is a lack of, or reduced, production of saliva and is a completely different animal. If PG and/or VG causes a sensation of dry mouth, why then does it not dissipate naturally as my saliva washes away any residue? Even several hours after my last vape. Why is it only satisfied by drinking water? It could be an affect like menthol where it fools the senses, I'm just having a hard time wrapping my brain around that possibility because it feels, behaves, and acts like mild dehydration, and the cure has always been water for me. If my body is being fooled, it's on a scale I've never experienced before.

Now, I happened across this MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) on Propylene Glycol. Under Hazards - Toxicity, it states that inhalation has little if any affect in acute exposure. However, chronic exposure...
prolonged skin exposure has caused irritation in 16% of dermatitis patients; any irritation
seen in normal people appears to be caused by local osmotic skin dehydration, disappearing
rapidly after removal of propylene glycol
And this MSDS Propylene Glycol USP.
Inhalation
High aerosol concentrations may cause mild reversible irritation of the nose and throat as well as CNS depression (primarily fatigue, dizziness and possibly loss of concentration, with collapse, coma and death possible in cases of severe over exposure).
Chronic Health Effects
See component summary.
• Propylene Glycol 57-55-6
Repeated or prolonged exposure of the skin to this material may cause defatting and drying of the skin. Prolonged or repeated breathing of high concentrations may cause symptoms of central nervous system depression.
If PG takes hours to be metabolized by the body, and one were to vape a lot in succession, the above makes the case for PG causing mild dehydration.

Still doing homework.

Now! Everyone...GROUP HUG! :p
Only if you promise to keep the tongue out of it.

I've been vaping for about a month and I just came down with a cold. As I'm sure you all know, vaping with a sore throat is murder -- worse than smoking. I've found that using LR cartos and getting a warmer hit helps some, but my throat still feels torn up and down. I'm just drinking lots of tea and water and all, but I'm not sure it is helping.

Someone needs to invent an all-in-one combination vaporizer and nebulizer that delivers both ejuice and moisture in one hit.

I had a really bad sore throat in my first week and a half after quitting analogs along with some cold like symptoms, and it does suck. Hang in there, it does get better.

Same here. Having a cold sucks... especially when I have no menthol to vape while sick. Putting an order in today for some.

VG and PG are hydrophillic and absorb moisture, but only to a point. The info you linked to is talking about absolutely pure chemicals (lab type). The ones we know are already hydrated so they have no dehydrating effect. That's why both appear regularly in skin care stuff, moisturising shampoos etc - they are used to retain moisture (just as their use with tobacco).

I thought of one way that vaping would increase water loss, but it has nothing to do with VG / PG - when vaping we blow out air from the mouth whereas in normal breathing mostly through the nose (that longer path releases less water). But that isn't going to add up to much!

Is it going to make me feel like I'm 100 years old if I ask what shisha is?

A hookah also known as a waterpipe or arghile, is a single or multi-stemmed (often glass-based) instrument for smoking in which the smoke is cooled by water. The tobacco smoked is referred to as shisha (sheesha) in the United Kingdom, United States, Mexico and Canada.

It doesn't mention NJ so you're safe;)

Wow what a debate : ) I also get the "dry" feeling when i vape but i guess im lucky that a bottle of water at night and a few through the day and im good to go. My husband also vapes and vapes all day and has no "dry" feeling at all so I guess its all in the person. In regards to the person with the cold my Dr. told me I was going to catch every little thing for the first 6 months of quitting smokes and can totally relate about the sore throat vaping sucking!
