Although still a newb myself, I feel the need to post this for newb-iers (newer newbies than I).
When I first came here, reading everything was impossible, sorting through was daunting. But one thing I noted was how many people talked about their collections, upgrades, etc. One of my major reasons for switching to vaping was financial- I just could not afford to keep buying up to two packs of regular cigarettes ("analogs") a day. I had read elsewhere that switching to an e-cigarette could save money.
Reading about various high-end upgrades almost scared me off. But I followed some simple advice here, got a no-box Joye 510, some e-liquid and one accessory- a pass through. (The pass through allows me to vape from computer or AC power while my batteries charge.)
Aside from e-liquid nicotine and some atomizers (coming in the future) there's nothing else I need to buy right now.
So, sure, if you have the disposable income, go for it as a hobby. For me, it's a good alternative to other nicotine replacement (patches, gum). And the basics have cost me under 100.00. In my area, that's less than two cartons of cigarettes and I have enough liquid to last me quite a while.
Been vaping for about three weeks, with a couple of slips because my nicotine liquid wasn't strong enough for me. (That's why my banner reflects less time).
So, go for it! It's been well worth it for me.

I've added a piece of advice when talking to people interested in e-cigs: just pick a starting model. Any one, doesn't matter. 510, 401, 801, 808, whatever. You won't know what you like and don't until you try one. If it works for you STOP LOOKING. Really. I've bought more stuff thinking I was missing something I wasn't. I advise only looking if you're unhappy with it in some way, and then only about that issue. Don't be like me, always reading on the forums, always buying more stuff, trying new stuff. Okay, it's fun, but NOT a money saver.

@Kilroy- Nice to hear that from you, since you are one of the first people who responded to me when I first came here a scant three weeks ago, knowing absolutely nothing. You were the first person to tell me about refilling carts!
@markule- Refreshing honesty!
@Rosa- Should have mentioned batts...that's down the line for me, especially since the bulk of my vaping is now done hooked up to my 'puter through my brand new pass through.

I just found out about e cigs last Wednesday and ordered one the sameday. Got it Saturday and loved it!!! I placed a second order that Monday for extra batteries, attys, carts & juice. So far I have spent $180 on my set up and in the future I will only spend money on juice as needed. I see the $180 as 4 cartons of cigarettes that would had only lasted for 40 days. So I know my start up cost was money was spent wisely, as I know I will get way over 40 days with my e cig.

I have tried also to be very thrifty, as I quit the analogs for my health, then financial reasons. I think vaping costs me one third the price of smoking, and I have 2 kits, a 510 and a kr8. I use the less expensive juices and they seem to be working just fine, tho I add vg to some of them. I boil out my carts and reuse them, I have only tossed 2 in 2 weeks. :)

Let me start by welcoming you to ECF:)
Secondly you are absolutely right....E smoking does not have to be expansive...You most certainly can get a very nice set up for under $100 bucks...The thing is though, the Mods that you are referring too can get pricey at times...But if you do your research, you can certainly get your self a nice mod for a decent price...And when i say a decent price i mean $100 or less...Just my 2 cents worth.... And once again welcome to ECF:)
