Rental cars, hotel rooms, etc. If there's no one around to tell me no, I do it. No one will know. Of course, I once had a hotel employee tell me to go ahead and smoke in a non-smoking room too. I'd be willing to bet that you can set off a smoke detector with one. I did it with a hot shower in a hotel room once.

If there is another type I don't know about them but that doesn't mean they don't exist I just haven't read about it...and I am not a fireman/fire inspector...
under most circumstances you will not set them off but its a safe bet you don't want to be fogging a room...

Yes Im sure there are "other ones" these days that sniff for things like explosive chemical compounds and such but they aren't in the non-smoking room at the Comfort Inn.

Besides I have smoked actual cigarettes in a non-smoking room with no issues. Yes it's not considerate to the other guests but it's winter around here 7 months a year and Im an addict!

I am traveling soon and just made reservations at some motels. Since I no longer smoke analogs, out of habit, I claimed to be a non smoker.

Then got to thinking about it. Anyone do any kind of testing or see if smoker detectors are triggered with vaping?

I sure don't want to get hit with monster fines or fees for setting off an alarm.

thanks

They willl never know anything.

I've been vaping for a few years now, and never had any problems with hotel rooms. I've stayed in lots of them in lots of different countries, and none of the smoke detectors have ever gone off. I don't trust my luck on airplanes, though. I normally stealth in my seat. Half the plane is always asleep, the other half doesn't care. If i had to use a plane bathroom, though, i'd make use of the vacuum from the toilet.

I vape in hotel rooms all the time. I'm not smoking. It only smells like bananas or watermelon when I leave. No problems so far.

Exactly. Though there were other issues as well, the main problem the hotel industry had with smoking rooms was getting the smell out of the room so they could put non smokers into the room later. Because vaping doesnt leave behind that stale old cigarette stink, vape away.

Theres more water vapor being left in the room from a nice hot shower than your PV anyway hehe.

yes, vapor technically can set off most detectors.

no, vaping normally will not ever set off a smoke detector, you would have to take the biggest hit ever and then blow into directly it the detector for it to trip.

general consensus on vaping in non smoking room, get it in, no worries.

(i have degrees in fire protection and detection :p)

I recently got back from a cruise where I vaped constantly in the cabin. At first I was paranoid because the cabin had an optical smoke detector. I generally avoided vaping near it, but forgot a few times and it never went off. So I imagine it's possible but not likely to set it off. As for the rest, no leftover cig. stank, so no issues there either :)

I have not tried vaping in a hotel room, but my girlfriend and I have been heavily vaping in our apartment while watching movies or something, and our alarm never goes off. Accordingly, there cannot be a heavy smell, as I vape in my work's back room on my lunch, and my boss doesn't even notice I have been vaping. It's a bit crazy, for she walks in after puffs, and doesn't say anything about the vapor or smell. Though, she is totally supportive of my vaping and is okay with my doing it in the back room, so maybe she just doesn't feel the need to mention it.

I don't pretend to understand the science of smoke detectors, but calling them "smoke" detectors is not fully accurate. As I get it, smoke, steam, even dust can trigger an alarm. It's the "clouding" of the air that triggers. So, yes, vaping would cause a trigger, but unlike smoking analogs, the vaper is very slight and disappears quickly.

There are photoelectric detectors that work by smoke particles reflecting a beam from an infrared LED that normally shines in a straight line. If smoke enters the chamber, the light is deflected down through to a photocell. There are ionization detectors that detect the microscopic particles of smoke using a tiny bit of radioactive material that emits tiny charged particles that are attracted to an opposite plate. When the smoke particles enter the chamber, they disrupt the beam of charged particles and cause the detector to sense the change in current.

Like ShannonA I was one of those terrible people who smoked in non-smoking rooms in the past. I would usually just smoke next to the open window and blow it out. I've never been hassled or had my credit card charged afterwards.

I would just go ahead and vape in the hotel room, I can almost guarantee you it will be fine. Last week I spent a few days in a non-smoking hotel room vaping my heart out with the windows closed. I even vaped while on my laptop directly in front of the fire alarm with no issues. Go for it!
