I'm pretty extroverted, and in general don't really care what people think about me- so I vape pretty much where ever I like. In confined spaces, the movies, or in large crowds inside I'm discreet about it, but no one has ever bothered me.
For folks not vaping in restaurants....you're missing out! I always carry a spare mouthpiece, and if the restaurant is slow I vape pretty openly after explaining to the server what it is. A lot of food service workers smoke, and they're really excited to hear about it, and give it a try. A few have even bought me drinks
I look at it as a public service, and agree that smokers are generally the most critical of it. Pretty much everyone at least knows a smoker- so anything that can help a friend or love one is pretty welcome. Most people are cool with it.

them to be considerate when other patrons are in here, especially children. Children don't know the difference between vaping and smoking, it looks the same to them and they don't need to be encouraged to do either.
