I'm having trouble getting the hang of this device. I have two kayfun's and last night I built two identical 28awg ni200 coils, 13 wraps which ohm'd out at around .16 according to the DNA40 when first built. I'm running my device at 450 degrees and 25 watts. Temperature protection works just fine and kicks in when it's supposed to. When I switch to my other kayfun it sometimes asks if it's a new coil and I select yes, and it again, it works fine, for a time. It seems as the night and day goes on the ohms keep reading lower and lower as I switch toppers. I switched over to my other Kayfun, the device asks if it's a new coil, I select yes, now the ohm's are reading .10. If I fire the device it stays at a steady 25 watts and the temperature doesn't even come up to 400 degrees and the watts never go lower than the 25 watts I have it set at and temperature protection doesn't kick in. So I switch over to my other Kayfun and now it's reading .09 and the same thing happens. Temp Protection doesn't work like it's supposed to and the watts remain the same but the temp never reaches what I have it set at.

I am thinking if I never switched my toppers I wouldn't have a problem but I like to switch flavors often. Am I just not using this device properly or is something wrong? I can still vape it but it's obviously not as intense because the temp is not reaching what I have it set at. I am thoroughly confused. Why the ohm's keep reading lower and lower I can't understand. I let the devices cool before I attach them to see if it makes a difference but it doesn't seem to help. I love the device when it works as I think it's supposed to but I can see that maybe this is gonna be more frustrating than it's worth. Any thoughts?

I didn't have time to read all replies (Thankgiving 'n all) so if this has been replied to, my apologies.

This video by BasilRay (I love this man's videos over everyone else) may better help you understand what's going on. Based on what I've watched it didn't seem to me like you had done anything wrong.

Basic Ni200 Micro Coil Build for DNA40 Devices - YouTube

EDIT~ I just saw other ppl posted videos. This one isn't really about how to build but more of understanding how TC is supposed to work.

I'm trying to see if I can't commune with Evolv's presence and divine why they went with nickel instead of titanium, especially since I think it was Brandon himself that said that titanium does work. So far the only reason that's visited my presence is nickel's somewhat higher temperature coefficient of resistance. Maybe I should quit divining and just ask Evolv directly.
If I were to speculate, I'd say there were a number of reasons:
  • The higher temperature coefficient. With a given set of electronics, the higher the temperature coefficient, the more precisely you can determine the wire temperature.
  • Availability. Pure nickel wire is widely available in various gauges. In the US, I've only found pure titanium wire in 30 and 24 gauge. Both produce usable coils, but IMO the sweet spot lies somewhere in between, so I've been twisting 2 and 3 strands of 30 gauge together.
  • "Politics". It's no secret that another company in Europe is also working on a board that controls coil temperature, and they've been talking about titanium since this summer. However, the wire that their associates brought to market is an alloy, rather than pure titanium. That alloy incidentally appears to have an even lower temperature coefficient than pure titanium and does not work reliably in temperature mode on my DNA40.

Date sticker in the battery compartment says 11 11 2014

Hmmm... possibly interesting, in light of KTM's comment to my comment about waiting to order so a to get the latest (major-)rev board:

I wouldn't worry too much. Mine has a date sticker inside the battery compartment and it's 11/12/2014. It's working fine and I tested it at 40w, where the display glitching usually happens, for over an hour.

So is that one day the break day between builds with old-rev occasionally glitchy boards versus builds with new allegedly-fixed-rev boards, or is it just the luck of the draw at work, I wonder?

Not sure, it had been performing flawlessly. I had ran it at 40 watts before, but last night when I did it, first fire resulted in a glitched screen.

Gotta send mine back, got the screen glitch last night.

I've had it a week.

I dont recall where I read this at- but it's been said to remove the battery & that seems to *fix* the glitch error. I haven't revisited the topic anywhere so I don't know if that's a permanent fix or not.

That's a temporary fix ... The problem is in the board... Send it back!

Not sure how that could be a permanent fix, though it makes me entertain the possibility that *all* the boards were glitchy and it's only shown on certain boards. I'm guessing that's not the case, but I suppose it is possible.

Someone posted 40% off starter kits for today along with the Cyber Monday code. Just have to wait till Monday

Black Friday Sale 2014 | Vapor Shark

Kinda hints that it's only certain starter kits (ego battery types) and for in store only. I could be wrong.

They said it affected 5-10% of the boards. They will replace it "no questions asked" if you do have the issue.

I got my EHPro KFL+ v2 and built a 28g, 10 wrap, 1.4Ω spaced coil on a 2.8mm bit. Works a bit better than the twisted 30g in my KFL+ v1.
