Quoted VCU Flyer: August 19, 2010

I just received this flyer so I was not yet able to give them a call. But to my knowledge it is still going on for anyone interested. This is the VCU Campus in Virginia.

Do you use electronic cigarettes?

Men and women who use electronic cigarettes daily and are between the ages of 18-
55 are needed to participate in a research study that requires one, 5-hour laboratory
visit.

Participants will be compensated.

Call (804) 827-3562
Monday-Friday
9am-4pm
for more detailed information about this and other studies for tobacco users

the study will be conducted in McGuire Hall on VCU's Medical Campus
Principal Investigator: Thomas Eissenberg, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of Psychology

Looks like Dr. E wants to find out if e-cigs work better if the test subjects actually know how to use them properly. :)

Some folks actually called in awhile back, and it appears that not only is Dr. Eissenberg recruiting experienced vapers, he's asking them to bring along their own devices. Word is that participants who enroll give information regarding the vendor, brand, flavor, and strength of cartomizer that they'd like to use, and it will be ordered for them. Participants will then use their own batteries to power the cartomizer of their choice. I talked to one vendor who confirmed that some orders from VCU had been placed for cartomizers. :)

I have no idea how scientifically/statistically valid a study with so many variables would be . . . it could be that in addition to using their own devices, participants will be asked to use a control model. But however it shakes out, it seems clear that Dr. Eissenberg is learning from at least some of his past mistakes (inexperienced vapers and cruddy equipment).

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I can't wait to see his angle. So far, all we've seen from the "recognized" scientific community are studies on how hard people need to suck (concluding that sucking harder will increase risk, even though there isn't anything in e-cigarettes that could get worse if inhaled "deeper") and a study that confirms diet and erectile dysfunction drugs are found in e-cigarettes (implying that they are in ALL e-cigarettes, without disclosing if they were advertised as such or not.)

It's been interesting what these groups have been choosing to study, while calling for banning e-cigs because there are no studies on safety and efficacy.

I have just gotten off the phone with VCU and here is the scoop:

They are looking for E-Cig users which have used ecigs only for an extended amount of time. If you sign up they ask that:

*You do not use your ecig for 12hrs before the scheduled study. And you do not drink caffein or eat 1hr before the study time.
*Please bring your own devise. They will provide the cartomizers that will be used and you will be able to choose your Nic Strength and your flavor (Probably Tobacco/Menthol) they have different threading and the preferred one they are using now is the 510.

The study will last 5hours and during this time they will place an IV Cath into your arm so they can take blood samples throughout the study. They will have you use the e-cig at several times and ask you questions to gauge your responses and monitor you.

People who come in and complete the 5hr study are given $200 compensation.

UNLIKE Several of the studies done here in VA This study is NOT being funded by Phillip Morris! And right now it IS Open Enrollment! They Need people to sign up and they are more than happy to accommodate to peoples schedules.

Called, left message , hope they get back to me!

This thread got me thinking that it would be good for Virginians to have a place to get the word out regarding stuff relevant to our state/region so I started a Virginia social group and although I am currently the only member (hey, it only 5 minutes old) it would be good to share info like this there!
