Out of three VVW only one has exhibited the self firing. I have to send in a couple others, for minor issues (I've needed to send them back for many months but keep putting it off - one was totally my doing when I literally soaked the WOODs in a bowl of Howard's - wax got inside the big button - it stuck on - killed atty and collapsed a spring - I caused it to happen) so I'm just sending Curly Oak VVW back in with them.

I know its totally inappropriate to make fun of someone mistakes and you know I LOVE YA TO DEATH so please forgive me but that story never stops me from cracking up.

So to get a better feel for this; No one has reported that they have experienced them firing on their own days later? Right after they got them? I know, turn it off if not in use. I don't think I have a problem at all other than not putting it down.

Sorry to hear anyone having an issue. Best thing is Rob's SUPERB Customer Service and this forum of GREAT folks.

My one of three that is doing it started either 24 or 48 hours after I started using it. It was probably 24 hours. Neither of my 801 connection ones is doing it. But it's the button switch and not the atty/carto connection. I think Robert said someone helped him do some of the button/switches and maybe over heated them soldering.

Hugs, Feisty Alice

I know you love me and I think it is hilarious, too. Even if I didn't think it is funny I wouldn't mind anyone else thinking it is.

thats alot of wax alice. and ive still yet to wax my 18490 lacewood but its still in like new condition even though it rarely leaves my hand

My "other" WOOD mod, Lacewood, never had a hard finish. It has never shined up really nicely like Robert's Lacewood. (Hint, you can see it in the bowl, on top.)

And Robert won't let me test one of the VV Woodvils for "swimming!!!!!" He insist that I take my Buzz Pro "swimming" instead.;)
During my studies today I read that Cocobolo is often used for knives, as it can tolerate repeated dunks in dishwater. Thought you would like to know that.:)

Some people have asked how to clean catch-cup of WOOD mods protecting the wood. I stick their wing-wangs through the wire mesh, with or without tube bottle cap on. I then scrub with humming bird feeder brush or DT brush with warmed 90% isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol warmed in pyrex measuring cup, in microwave, in 5 second burst till hot, but not too hot to touch. BE REALLY CAREFUL HEATING ALCOHOL IN MICROWAVE. IT CAN FLASH. You can use colander or whatever else the tube will fit through.

You can flush the tube with or without pressure using syringe.

Rewax after.

BTW... Those are two Walnuts and two Curly Oaks. Three 510 connectors and one 801 connector.

I took one of mine to work yesterday and it started firing on it's own intermittently. Since i couldn't figure out where the on/off switch was(and still haven't figured that out if someone could enlighten me please:facepalm:) I just dumped the batteries out of it when I had to leave the office. Curiously enough, it hasn't done it again since yesterday morning. So maybe it's something that "fixed" itself after enough use/time? Unless it starts again, I'm not worrying about it at this point. I will continue to remove the batteries for now though when I'm away from it for extended periods of time. This is a killer mod Rob. Absolutely beautiful piece of work and I couldn't be more pleased with it than I am now. Unless maybe I could find that on/off switch? :D

As soon as mine started firing on it's own.. I took the batts out, the carto off and boxed it up to send back. I know it's a killer mod but I don't know about it being able to fix itself. If it does it once it may do it again. If I were you, I'd just bite the bullet and send it back and be sure. (and safe) :)

I am gonna send it out tomorrow priority shipping. I was just POed cause I was so excited to use it.It is my first ever bottom feeder. I have a question tho about the whole coffee bath and waxing thing. Mine device didn't have a smell at all when I got it so I don't need to do the coffee bath, correct? Or do I need to do it to wax it? And what wax should I use and how do I apply it? All over inside and out or just inside? I know these things wont be getting done till I get it back from Rob but wanted to have the equipment and know how to get it done as soon as it gets back to me.

The coffee is for the odor from the poly coat. If it is too strong you can place it in coffee in a bag for a day or so to remove the smell.

Wax is not dependent on coffee! You want to apply the wax inside and outside. The outside does not allow the wax to soak in but will give some protection. Howard's Feed and Wax can be bought at your local home store or online. I get mine from Amazon. I get the SunShield for the UV protection.

Just apply the wax, a little bit with a q-tip to the insides. It will soak it up. A little on the outside and let dry for 30-min to an hour. I try to let mine sit overnight. Then just wipe off remaining wax and buff.
