Oh wow, I must be seriously undertreating my VVW then - I waxed the insides up but good when I got it, and was planning on re-waxing the innards monthly.
You aren't mistreating them. Once a month, inside, is probably over "kill." Most of the Woodvils have finises on outside that won't allow the wood to soak up any oils. The wax on outside of most is only to protect the finish. Waxing outside for most is mainly dependent on how much it is handled. I got in some of the Howard's hard wax but I haven't used it yet.
I'm really enjoying the poly coat on our three VV Woodvils. Less concern about juice, dirt, moisture. But I do still keep the hard wax on them to help prevent fine scratching of poly coat. Of course Howard's Sun first to help keep colors from changing.
I don't do regular waxing on them unless they are being used regularly. Once you get the inside wood to the point where it won't absorb any more orange oil, that is in Howard's, it shouldn't be needed to be redone very often; maybe 2-3 times a year.
Keep in mind that the oil can make the bare wood expand some. It shouldn't be an issue except on the bare edges of door and door grove. (Although in very rare cases the door can actually warp some.) A very careful sanding, with extremely fine paper, with paper down on a perfectly flat surface, keeping door angle so that it is exactly the same as it comes, and done in one light swipe and then test, etc... will take care of any swelling from oil abortion.
My Curly Oak VV and All Spalted came with pretty tight doors. After oiling they need a tiny bit of wood removed from edges as they have become tighter and hard to slide. Bloodwood/Spalted door was looser than those two to begin with. After oiling it doesn't need any wood removed from door sides.
Hugs, Feisty Alice
