Warning: My Aspire Atlantis coil just FELL APART while I was vaping, and particles got lodged in my throat.

Sorry to hear what you're going through, and I hope it works out for the best.

Not just Atlantis users should be worried.... Anyone still vaping with disposable heads with silica wicks (a known carcinogen) should strongly reconsider, and find a setup that allows you to use cotton.

An old thread on the subject...

Although the materials used in the initial Atlantis head seem to have been a bad idea, that does not translate to silica wicks being a problem. The twisted or braided silica wicking fibers we normally use are not of the crystalline variety associated with silicosis. Here's some insight - http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...77764-dangers-silica-wicks-2.html#post8663717

Whether cotton or silica, a dry hit is the thing to avoid in order to be safe.

Pics?? You said you'd post....

In a bit bud. Its 7am here, and I've gotten only roughly 45 minutes of sleep. Ill post them today

Heres another report from facebook:

"Jeanie *******: Thank you for telling us. Same thing happened to me the other day! but I was fortunate enough to see the gunk in the drip tip before I took a pull! I've been afraid to use it since! It looked like a big piece of wet cotton. My first though was, what if I sucked that into my lungs!!! I will not be using it anymore!!!"

Omg can we please stop pressing false information like "chopped silica" and "pieces of silica" they use cotton and their ceramic paper stuff, aspire even said that there is no silica in them, so what don't we understand from that? Cotton. Ceramic. Not silica... I use all their products every day. My current atlantis coil is almost 30ml through jimmy the juice man creme brûlée and it's amazing.

My issue with it was its tendency to spit very hot liquid right into the back of my throat. I gave up before getting the large gunk pieces.

I'd suggest they need more contact area between the coil and the wick (more turns or something).

The spitback hitting the back of the throat can burn and feel like something is stuck back there. I tucked a piece of 400 mesh in the drip tip and solved that problem pretty easily...

Partially right; Its a cotton paper wraped around 2 halves of a ceramic material wad. And this ceramic wadding can disintigrate in certain juices, or under certain conditions. This is the issue with the current heads and why alot of vapers are upset with them.

The chances are low and the stories very few. But I know my cotton heads wont break down like this, so I choose not to take the chance.

Atlantis is a nice tank and all, and if Aspire truly goes to OCC heads, they will have a surefire winner. But until then, my atlantis is shelved ^^

Looks like I'll be switching to Melo coils in my atlantis since they are confirmed to be cotton. There is so many new sub-ohm tanks on the market utilizing cotton that the old atlantis coils seem outdated.

4 air holes and the juice chambers on the wick are enormous compared to the Melo/Atlantis coils.

Glad to hear you've recovered. I have a couple of Aspire ET-S and a Horizon Spartan mini now that I use when out and about. Both of these use BVC'S and I haven't had any issues with them. I don't know how similar they are to the Nautilus or Atlantis coils. I'm gonna stick with my RDA and attempt to rebuild all of my BVC'S from here on out.

Voltage X Voltage / divided by your units resistance (Ohms) gives you the wattage...
So the math still isn't adding up..

Assuming standard aspire coil with 1.6 Ohm
3.8v * 3.8v / 1.6 = 9.025 watt

and backwards 23watt * 1.6 = 36.8 square root of 36.8 = 6.066 v

Sorry not trying to derail the thread, but want to better understand the specific details when this occurred.

I'm so sorry to hear what happened to you. I'm glad I solely use my own coils. I know exactly what goes into them.simple organic cotton wicking media. Those pre made coils are so expensive that it amazes me! I save a ton just winding my own. I've also noticed home wound coils last so much longer too. When the coil itself gets gunk I just burn the stuff off and it's good to go for another round. I can't see paying that much for coils. It's very scarey what happened to you. You might consider making your own coils as well? I know it's not for everyone but it's a lot easier to do than you might think.well, I just wanted to pop in and let you know I'm glad your doing better! If I were you, I would consider contacting the company and let them know what happened. It would be interesting to hear there response. Best of luck.

Almost, you actually calculated the amperage. 23 watts and 3.8 volts means a resistance of around 0.6 ohms.

Make it easier on yourself and use something like Ohm's Law Calculator

The Atlantis is marketed as a Sub-ohm tank (even though I suppose it's the coil that makes it sub-ohm and the tank has nothing to do with it) so you will find that many people are using the coil heads marked as 0.5ohms.
