You are a stand up guy! and yes it was your fault and yes it is an incredibly stupid design. I can't see any excuse for it being built this way.
Note to self, don't buy any of those, wonder what they will screw up next, kind of basic if you ask me. If you can overlook that, or don't care the future is written on the wall.
