To answer the OP's question. I've pretty much stuck to device/atty for quite awhile, though there have certainly been change throughout the 8 years since I bought my first cig-alikes, which I only used exclusively for a couple of weeks.
Here's a summary:
My first device was an unknown brand cig alike.. Very soon after I found ego's and ego tanks, which was major improvement at the time. Within 3 months I invested in a home made wooden squanker and shifted to mostly squankers for well over a year.....with "510 atty".
Within a year of vaping I tried a vari device and evenually did shift to all vari mods as I slowly switched to using"carto tanks" and fazed out my early adored "mech"/unregulated devices and the "510" atty. It's been several years now and I continue to use an assortment of vari devices, even some of my oldest models.
I continue to vape very low watts MTL and with the quality of inexpensive devices these days I simply pad or replenish my arsenal from time to time with the sizes and shapes I most prefer. Pico and Wisemec CB 80 are good examples many may recognize.
As to the atty evolution -- I've tried a selection, including early and recent MTL rebuildables, but after a couple years with carto tanks I did change to mostly using Nautilus BVC coils for some years with the original Nauti's and then the Kabuki. Now I mostly use Zenith coils, though I have not totally abandoned my Kabuki's or a couple RBA's just for the fun of switching around.
I have tried a few pods and an AIO's -- but this old school vaper prefers a small vari mod and a topper with my old school drip tip collection.
