ok... i'm outta here!!!! there are WWAAAAAAYYYY too many new yucky bugs around here!!!

Picture removed because I'm still a newbie

Well it looks like the good news for you is that in not to many days, 2 out of 3 of the beasties will be gone from around you (the not the spider ones). The beatles are nymph stages for flying insects . So in a month or so, look to the skies. As far as the spider in the toilet, so many little beasties have been reported to have crawled in through the sewer system, a little spider like that should not worry you :)

no we didn't kill him... but this morning i found one of these crawling on the computer desk!! i grabbed a coffee mug and a piece of paper that was lying around and trapped him in it... showed it to the in-laws and they suggested to flush it... so i took him to the bathroom threw it in the toilet and flushed... the damn thing jumped like 3 times and just sat on the edge of the bowl... i about lost it!!! i was scared and laughing at the same time... so the F-I-L came up and pushed it back in and flushed and it went down. but now i'm scared to use the bathroom... b/c it might come back and get me!!!

Now ya did it Val. You ...... off it's parents, siblings, aunts, uncle and friends cause you didn't just take it outside. I think if I were you I would stay far far away from the toilet.

Seriously though, one of the few times I was in class :) I remember a teacher once saying that the majority of spiders are not going to harm us and in fact are very beneficial and the only reason so many people kill spiders is because they are "ugly" so we fear them. Hence, we kill them. I admit I didn't pay much attention at the time but in retrospect it is very true.

So here is a true story. One day, many years ago, I happened to see a spider spinning a web. I watched it through the window for hours spinning that web because it was fascinating. I, in fact was in awe at what that spider was creating. I had walked past hundreds of webs without a thought but it really was a thing of beauty. Like art. I watched it repair the web daily and again just truly watching it put me in awe of just how hard they work at creating a web. Anyway, after watching that spider for days, I no longer feared them and in fact had acquired a new found respect for them.

Granted some of them can be pretty bizarre and kind of scary looking but I remind myself of what that teacher said and what I learned just from watching that spider spin a web. Why kill something that isn't going to hurt me just because it scares me with it's looks? They can actually be creatures of beauty.

Same with snakes. Most won't hurt us so why do we randomly kill them? Honest to GOD statement. I once had a rattler within two inches of my hand and it didn't bite me. It had a way out so instead of biting me, it went the other way.

I have this very irrational deathly fear of spiders. It's not a pretty thing and comes complete with blood curdling screams. Even looking at the pictures gives me goose bumps and the creepies. One day there was a program on The Discovery Channel about spiders and I made the mistake of walking by as they were explaining that there are so many spiders that you are never more than 3 feet from one ever. I didn't sleep for days after hearing that. Bottom line, you are stuck with spiders around if you like it or not LOL

But witches like spiders. Granted I think it is usually to put in some potion, but still.

Actually, I am sorry you have that phobia. I would think any phobia would be very difficult to deal with. But that is much different than the "kill them cause they are ugly" or I just don't like them thing.

I don't go near them let alone kill them! If they are harmless hubby catches them and throws them outside. And he does it in his bare hands *shudder*. Ones with bites that may cause problems he kills though.

Several years ago he came in with a wild tarantula he caught outside and kept it in an old fish tank in his work room. The door is always shut and I never go in there, but I couldn't sleep knowing it was even in the house so he let it go again.

I have gotten better through the years and don't scream as badly, unless I'm caught off guard, then I scream. Once he peels himself off the ceiling he comes running to see what I'm screaming about LOL

LOL @ once he peels himself off the ceiling. I'm happy to hear it has gotten better for you. One of my friends sister is like that with snakes. No idea where the phobia came from but she is scared to death of them. One of those where you can't even play a joke on her with a rubber snake for fear she might literally have a heart attack. Takes all the fun out of it.

Sorry suddenly!! I used to be afraid they would get in my ears, but I wear earplugs now, not because of spiders, but because hubby snores, so I don't have that fear anymore, but now I'll have to find something to cover my mouth! LOL

skydragon... snakes I happen to like, it's bugs, especially spiders that get to me. Makes no sense

I would take almost any spider or snake over a fly any day.

The house fly and other types of “filth flies” can become nuisance pests, but also are important for their potential to harm humans and animals. House flies, for example, can spread diseases such as food poisoning and dysentery. Flies, including stable flies and mosquitoes (which are also classified as flies, or Diptera), can inflict painful bites while feeding on the blood of humans and other animals, and some species transmit disease.

The habits of filth flies favor the spread of bacteria and other disease-causing organisms. Filth flies often feed and lay eggs on garbage, manure and carrion before contaminating human foods and food preparation surfaces by landing on them. When feeding, house flies regurgitate their stomach contents onto food to liquefy it before ingesting it. They also may contaminate food and surfaces by defecating on them..

My mother and her sister did terrible things to each other. Now because of this, one was scared to death of snakes and the other of spiders.

My mother who always loved snakes, and put them down my father's pants on a regular basis, pushed my aunt into a snake pit and would not help her get back out. Now my aunt was lucky she only got scared, because they were in PA and there are a lot of rattle snakes there. Not sure if my mother knew which type of snakes they were. I would think so because she used to go with my grandfather every year during the rattle snake bounty hunt.

A couple of years later my aunt got back at my mother. By this time they had moved to NY and lived near the water. If any of you have lived near a big body of water like I have you know there will be spiders galore.

My grandparents had a coal furnace and shortly after a delivery of coal my aunt locked my mother in the cellar. In the coal was a huge nest of big, black, furry, jumpy type spiders. She was covered from head to toe with these spiders. Did my aunt open the door for her? NOPE!!!!!
They were not children when these two events happened. They were in their 20s.

PAYBACKS ARE H..L:evil:

I was never afraid of snakes because of my mother, unfortunately, I caused my children to be afraid of them, but not on purpose. We had just gotten a new house and we were landscaping the yard. I found a nest of baby snakes and picked up two fist fulls and ran excitedly to my kids to show them my wonderful find. To this day they are deathly afraid of snakes. But they were just babies. The snakes, I mean.

Well, I think many phobias don't make "sense" to the person who feels them as it seems many don't know where they came from. But feel it they do.

Maybe if you could stand to watch one long enough, you should watch one spin a web. It really is interesting. Time consuming, but interesting. And somehow, it takes the scaryness away. At least it did for me. But I didn't have a phobia with them so it might be hard for you to watch.

Are your kids still young enough to learn not to be afraid of snakes?

I used to be afraid of spiders too. I believe it was because of the fear my mother had, with all the screaming and yelling whenever there was any type of spider around.

I had a simulair experience that you had. I was bed ridden for about a year and living with my father. I was next to a window where there was one huge, big, ugly, hairy spider, living outside, thank you very much. The body on this spider was the size of a quater. At first it scared the crap out of me, but after awhile I started watching her. I couldn't get rid of it. I was on the second story.

So I started watching this spider all the time. Catching its food, covering it with web and putting it in her web. I felt sorry for some of the butterflies and moths that got trapped. Some parts were pretty gory that close up but you get detached after awhile and just observe. I also got to see the egg laying and birth of a bizzillon baby spiders.

It was all very interesting and I no longer was afraid of spiders.:toast:
I don't feel a need to do it again though:glare:

My children are in their 30s now. Yes, they are still afraid of snakes.

I have become more leary of them myself. Not because I am afraid of them, but because when my parents were alive they could tell me what kind of snake they were. Being so close to PA there are a lot of snakes coming in by trains, planes & automoblies so I don't dare just pick up any ole snake anymore. One bite could be my last:(

I know what you mean about feeling sorry about certain insects they eat and it is somewhat gruesome. I admit I have been known to release certain insects before they have been reached by the spider. Then I feel guilty for taking the food from the spider. But there are enough nasty insects for them to eat.

I don't make it a habit of watching them spin a web and definitely not eating. It was just kind of funny how it changed my perspective. I can't say that there aren't some that still freak me out a little, I just don't kill them for it anymore.

So here's to no longer being afraid of spiders. :toast:

Yeah, it's probably a good thing to know what you are picking up. And it's okay to be leery of them. I just don't like it when people always kill something just because they are afraid of it. And most of the time it is completely harmless.

I don't mind admitting I have an absolute phobia about snakes. Here's how bad it is. If I was in a pit with snakes and couldn't get out and had a pistol, I'd blow my brains out. They are the most vile sick creature on the planet and I'm getting excited just writing about them.

Hey 5card. Did you have a bad experience with one?
