what's the point of dry burning?

I think it's time that I clean my vivi nova head now. After a week of successful vaping, one of my vivi nova (the Mini) is starting to give a burnt plastic taste. From what I've read, this is due to the "gunk" inside the head?

I also noticed that the other vivi nova (large) I was using is still working fine, and I've used it a lot more than the one (Mini) that needs cleaning now. Maybe it's due to the juices? I've used a chocolate flavored juice in the Mini and a clear menthol juice in the large vivi nova. I read some where that darker colored juice tend to kill heads faster?

Anyway, so I just take off the head (the complete head? or just a portion?), rinse it in water, dry it, and do a dry burn? But what's the point of the dry burn? I'm afraid that the heated coils will burn the dry wicks (since there are no water to dissipate heat), and ruin the wicks...

Burns off the build up on the heating element. There is a wet burn method too here is a link to a very good list of cleaning methods.

First, read this to learn how to dry burn correctly.

That explains it pretty well, but you don't have to worry about burning the wick……silica doesn't burn. One of my vivi nova heads has been dry burned ~20 times and is still performing like it just broke in. If you've rebuilt the coil with cotton wick, you can't dry burn (cotton will burn)……but that doesn't seem to be the case.

In the old days, people used to use high-powered devices to do their dry burns.

But I have found that using a good, strong 18650 battery is ideal for dry burning.
You can sit on the power button and the coil never gets hotter than a bright orange.

Pulsing the power becomes a forgotten memory.

I've been dry burning my 510 atomizers for well over 2 years and not once have I popped a coil.
I'm not sure it is even possible to pop a coil at 3.7 volts.

It works to clean the coil basically the same way a self cleaning oven works, and that is to heat up well above normal operating temperatures, which burns off any residual juice gunk.

Yep, burns off the gunk, and a silica wick doesn't burn, that's why they use them.

Burns the gunk off! I usually do a 5 second burn with a 5 second rest.... rinse and repeat

Ok, I've put the old head in alcohol and put on a brand new one (1.8 Ohm though), at first it was great but soon I'm having that weird taste again. Could it be a bad head? Do I throw it out or what? I didn't really wash it or anything, just took it out of the box and put it on.

i dry burned a 2.4ohm clearomizer head and man it started smelling so bad. i dont know if it was still good or not but with that smell i ended up just tossing it and using a new coil.

If the 1.8 head was brand new the problem is most likely it's not getting enough juice to the coil. The wicks may be pinched a little bit, you could try to lift up the rubber cap or cut away a little around the wick if lifting up does'nt work. Also you must tilt to get juice up to the top of the wicks, I usually have to do it every 2 to 3 drags. Also I was wondering if when you dry burned did you take the cap off the head so you could see the coil and rinse it out properly?
