I'm getting started with a couple of Nova tanks and have ordered wick and wire. I already have a work station where I do fine solder work with magnifying glass, test equipment, small tools, and snips. Do you guys recommend using a needle or wire straight to wind over with the wick. I've seen some use needles some paper clips.
Cyclotron, I feel ya I was a 2M tech for 5 years...
My advice is just wrap to the wick, and adjust with fine tipped tweezers when your done... keep the spacing even.

That's exactly where I aim for, between 2.8 and 3.4, and do 4 wraps with 33 ga Kanthal. I wrap the coils about a machine screw so they do come out nice and even, then thread my #1 cotton candle wick through the coil. This makes the coil a tiny bit loose so as to not constrict the wicking performance. Works wonderfully! :D

Once you get the hang of it you'll find your consistent coil creation technique.

I have been following this thread very closely since I have ordered my Vivi Nova and because of that video by PBusardo. Question: machine screw? As opposed to regular screw?? Confused here. I realize different screws have different threads on them, but totally unsure of what a machine screw is. A picture is worth a thousand words :) I know the difference between fine threads and coarse threads. Ex-hubby had a tapping business and I used to tap parts.

Another question: how do I ... Bookmark... this thread so that when it comes time for me to rebuild the first time, I can find it easily?

Totally hoping that I won't need it for a long time. Haha

Great info and tips here!

Robino, while I believe it is better to use something (so as to ensure you don't "choke" the wick), it doesn't have to be a screw. The suggestion that a screw be used is so the grooves maximize a uniform wrap. Instead, you can wrap it sloppily and, when done, take a pair of tweezers and squeeze the wraps together (all the way). It will spring back slightly so your wire will not touch itself and leaves you with a nice, clean-looking, tight wrap. I use a pin. Most screws and nails found around the house are too wide.

I'm slightly .... LOL so the idea of a uniform wrap really sounded up my alley. I was basically curious about what a machine screw was. So I'm guessing a machine screw is very thin since you use a pin. I havent received my Nova yet, so I don't even really know what the wicks look like, size wise, until I get the whole thing. Pictures don't really give me an actual understanding of the size. I need to have it in my hand and physically look at it. I'm looking forward to this new adventure in vaping.

A machine screw is one that you thread a nut onto (or screw in a tapped hole). It is unlike a wood screw or sheet metal screw which cuts it own grooves. I can't picture most people having a machine screw in their house that is thin enough for wrapping coils. A paper clip is plenty wide enough. As for the neat coils, the method of squeezing them together (as I described above) will satisfy your .... tendencies as well as anything. You probably don't even need tweezers. Judging from your picture, I am assuming you come from the female-sort of gender and suspect you have some nice lady-like fingernails that would substitute nicely for tweezers in this application. I do not have such fingernails as I use Aunt Bea's poultry shears to trim ny fingernails. :)

Got it!! Thanks for the pictures!

Yes, you assumed correctly. I am a female and yup I do have those longish fingernails but will probably use my trusty tweezers that I already have a pair just for my new vaping habit. I don't want to use those anywhere near my eyes. I'm sure e-juice would be just as bad, if not worse, than getting smoke in the eyes.

You guys crack me up !!!

Now if you guys could help with the dog that barks all flipping day long while the owner is at work.......I would consider you saints.

Ah good morning!!

You can borrow my wife's cat. She's mean (the cat). She can take down deer and hates dogs. :D
