I had a few small holes in my aluminum siding from where an old down spout was mounted. Filled them up with caulk and didn't think any more about them.

Woke up one morning with pecking noises that sounded like they were coming from the attic, so I crawled around up there looking for a trapped bird and couldn't find anything. The next morning, same thing, went up into the attic again, nothing up there.

The third morning I poked my head out the back door thinking maybe something was on the roof and found an American Goldfinch going to town having pecked out the caulking in those small holes. By the time I got back with the BB gun he was already gone. The next two mornings I got up and went and sat on the deck waiting for him. Got him with the BB gun both times. I was surprised he came back to get shot a second time, so the next morning I went out there with my 22 caliber pellet rifle intending to end it.

He thankfully didn't show up, but my regular Orkin man did to do his perimeter spray. He was understandably curious as to why I had a rifle with me, and said that the insect spray they use doesn't kill the birds, but it does repel them. He also recommended refilling the the little holes with a bit of caulk, then a piece of steel wool, then more caulk on top. I did that real quick and he started spraying the holes afterwards and I haven't had an issue since.

I'm not sure what insecticide Orkin uses for the perimeter spray, but that might be worth looking into to repel them.

I read where aluminum foil will discourage them but my thought was that they'd just move to another section. When I first moved in, the house was advertized as maintenance free. I had to laugh about that because all it meant was that there had been no outside maintenance in 16 years, not that it didn't need it. I had to put a primer and two coats of stain on. It took all summer.

That held up real well until about ten years ago where the areas that got a lot of sun were looking ragged. I redid those areas and I was good until now. There are section of dry rot that the boards would need to be replaced and I'm sure the moss on the siding along the roof of the garage probably ate the wood away there too.

They have a vertical vinyl siding that looks nice and should keep me for thye rest of my life. There are some other fabricated boards I could have used but they're three times the price. My plan is to have them pull the wood off, add insulation and the vinyl. It will be a bit pricey, but will keep me off the ladder while I'm here (other than doing some type gutter guard (unless I add it to the project.

I got converted to snuff only a couple of days ago when I received a sample pack from a friend in Western Australia. I live in Tasmania. I only wish I heard about this sooner. So easy to use and no tell tale clouds to peeve nutters off that think I am smoking when I am actually vaping. The nic hit was also fantastic. My two favourites are White Elephant and Honey Bee and I have already been onto Mr.Snuff and placed a sizeable order. The down side being about 5 weeks by Royal Mail...Oh well my friend in Western Australia has sent me enough to tide me over in this time period. Snuff gimmme snuf :w00t:

I'm still hooked on the Raspberry snuff I've been using. I like the Honey Bee also but not quite as much.

I saw an add on FB for a three LED head set that uses 2 18650 batteries which were included. It was relatively cheap and the comments were positive so I thought I'd try it. I know it was less than $15. Anyway, I got it on Friday and it works great. I can now take the dog out at night or take the trash down the drive hands free with lots of light. Hopefully it will hold up over time. The batteries are in a compartment on the back of the set and wires run to the lamps.

Yeah, I'm sure in looks funny if you're passing on the road as I'm coming down the driv with all three lights on. I had one pass just as I was getting to the road. I lowered my "high beams" so I didn't blind the driver if they looked it. In flashing mode in a dark room they almost look like strobe lights.

I added these about three years ago to all my gutters and haven't had a leaf problem since. I'm surrounded by trees and my gutters would fill up like crazy in the spring and fall. Since I've added these I haven't had to clean them out at all. They just lay on top and blow away. Not too expensive either.

Where did you get them Rebel? I hadn't seen that concept before. I got about 5 to 7 years out of the ones I bought at home depot. They Were plastic with holes with a mesh material on top. It was a bit of a pain installing but not too bad. Had to slide under the bottom row of shingles and cut or, as I did, grind the plastic down on each one where the hangers fell on the gutters.

Those look ideal. I was considering asking about options from the builders but I'd be willing to spend some ladder time to install something like that. The only place it's not easy is in the back 65' or so because I need to use an extension ladder there.

You can get them at any of the big box hardware stores Roth. They come in four foot lengths so I just measured a close proximate and then bought a couple extras. I tried those plastic mesh ones and let's put it this way, there's still a box and half of them in my garage. I hated what a pain in the .... they were to install, plus I wasn't too keen on prying up the shingles. With the foam ones, it was simple and quick, I was done in a couple of hours and they fit under the hangars so no cutting or grinding. And they are easy to cut if you end up with an odd length. Gutters have remained clean and unclogged since. ;)

Not sure how long ago I bought them but I know the ones you installed weren't available at the time. I looked over everything they had and decided on the current ones. You're right though, a lot more work with the ones I used. I'm actually excited to get the new gutters installed. I solved most of my basement water issues (I'd say all if I knocked on wood) by extending the downspouts away from the foundation and discovering one that had split and was dumping the water right against the house.
