I chose #3. I have been a heavy smoker for 34 years and have been a 3 pack a day, to just most recently 1.5 - 2 pack a day. Was told by many doctor's that I have to quit and after my last lung xray, reality started sinking in. I have tried the gum, patch, and lozenge but they do not work for me. Period. And Chantix? No Thanks. The possible side effects are absolutely not worth it. When I heard about ecig's, I thought that if anything would work, this would be it. I have been smoke free for the past 4 days but it is still a struggle to not grab a pack of cigarettes but this is a huge accomplishment for me which I thought would never happen. I am hoping that some where down the road, that I can quit nicotine all together but I believe that I will continue vaping for a long time to come because some of the psychological aspects of smoking analogs are quite strong.

Sorry Kristin, but I cannot answer the poll - it would only be possible if you had allowed for multiple responses. I had several reasons, and to be forced to pick only one would not accurately reflect reality.
Is there not one that is ever so slightly more important than the others?

I had several reasons, as well. I wanted to save money, I thought they were cool gadgets, I wanted to eventually quit, I wanted my husband to quit, I wanted to circumvent the upcoming Wisconsin indoor smoking ban, but the thing that appealed to me most was that I could keep "smoking" with less risk.

I have a bit of an oral obsession. I used to tell people that if there were "Something sort of like a cigerette, but without the tar and with better flavor" I'd be on it. So, obviously as soon as I found out about e-cigs I was in both feet first! Smoked for about 18 years, gave it up multiple times, always craved ciggies. I've been a vaper for 2 months now, don't miss those tar sticks at ALL!

i don't think i quite fit into any of these boxes. i loved smoking, never intended or had a desire to quit. mostly smoked vanilla black cloves and occasionally camel crush.

the only thing i didn't like is how it stuck to my hair, getting burns (i am clumsy x_x about two weeks before i bought the first model i did i had burned myself really well, and scarred up pretty bad, knowing i wouldn't get burned again helped me have an interest), and accidentally burning my car (which i love like a person 85 300zx<3 dream car) furniture and other belongings.

i'm kind of a techno nerd lol. i love gadgets and technology.
however i'm also a girl and like "cute" things.
i saw these when they very first started coming out, but they all looked like over-sized fancy office pens, or magic markers.
so to me they were way big and totally tacky looking.

i mean the questions/looks of having a pink magic marker hanging out of my mouth, no thank you.

anyways with the more recent micro mini models with pcc's and the models that have the fun colored leds and parts like similar to the magic marker lines and having more of the feel and size of an analog without being so much of a clone(white/brown w/red led) that without close inspection you couldn't tell it wasn't one.

so the fact that i could carry them around easily and keep batteries charged at all times and having all the feel of a "pack", that was probably 1 of the top 3 things that finally got me interested honestly.
that's when i decided to heck with it and ordered a starter kit.

when it arrived and my daughter asked what it was, i explained.
she replied,"you mean i won't be sick and cough anymore? and you won't die?!" and then hugged me and proclaimed ,"you made me so happy mommy!"
THAT is what made me say ok i got to really give this a chance.

still smoke free after almost 2 months and converted 3 others

sorry for the life story, but my original "selling" point was i say a super compact little kit and i wanted to tinker with it, so if that would count in one of the above categories please let me know. i just didn't really see which one that kinda fit into.

Nobody ever quite fits into all the answers on a poll, I think. You just pick the closest option to the general truth. :)

I went with #2. I finally recalled that I had seen the segment about e-cigs on CBS Sunday Morning and that got me curious. I have wanted to quit smoking for over a year but was afraid to attempt it and gain weight again like I had on a previous attempt. My logic was to get an c-cig and try it out to see if I liked it. Then, if it worked, I would switch to vaping and gradually step down the nicotine amounts until I was at zero. This would, I thought, enable me to quit smoking while still giving me the stress relief that smoking always gave me in the past. (i.e. breaks from the computer, breaks from people at work, something oral besides food and tons of gum which wears my jaw out, etc...)

And so far? I've been right! I have been analog free for over a week, not stressing it, not snacking and not smelling of cigarette smoke! I currently enjoy my vapes at about 24mg of nicotine and I will gradually reduce that over time. The only thing I can see that might change my initial thoughts on the situation is that I may just continue to vape for the fun and enjoyment of it!

Hi Kristin,

I would like to answer this question and participate as I am a fan of your work. So I quit smoking and took up vaping because my wife has astima and being the bad little addict I am would sneak smokes in the house when she was gone. Well Im sure we can guess how well that worked so the answer that would closest describe me is to avoid inside smoking bans, but this ban was at my own house. However really I dont care that much about defeating public smoking bans as I use snus in those situations.
