Why do I bother talking to idiots?

So I'm having a vape after dinner outside the restaurant. A younger guy asks me for a cigarette. I tell him I don't smoke cigarettes, it's electronic. Here's our conversation:
Idiot - "Oh, the water vapor stuff?"
Me - "Yes"
Idiot - "Isn't that stuff expensive?"
Me - "It costs me $20 for 2 weeks of liquid, vs $11 per pack of cigarettes"
Idiot - "So you're saving $4"
Me (shaking head in amazement - "No, it costs $20 for 2 whole weeks instead of $11 every day"
Idiot - "Oh, so you're saving about $9"

A few others are within earshot and are equally amazed at the lack of math skills

Me - "And I'm not inhaling tar and carbon monoxide"
Idiot - "Yeah, but you're inhaling water into your lungs"
Me (I've pretty much abandoned any hope of intelligence, so I let him believe it's water instead of PG and VG) - "Yeah?"
Idiot - "I'd rather tar and carbon monoxide, 'cause at least I'm not getting water in my lungs"

Me and the rest of the crowd are just shocked by the stupidity. By this point, theres about 8 people shaking their heads in disbelief. After the idiot walks away, one guy says "Where do these people come from?"

so sad....

(i hope he doesn't have a job that requires him to make change without the register telling him the amount to be returned to the customer! LOL)

He does.

I blame it on the chemicals in the food. They cause the common sense gene to be destroyed just before birth. And in this case the math gene! hehehe

I came into this thread with a witty internet troll stupidity joke ready to go and now its wasted....

Oh well it is even more amazing when you meet stupid in real life.

But it's even more fun when there are witnesses....
I'd told him that yeah the water in the lungs is a pia. I have to drain them every night. Takes about an hour for each one. Really, the biggest problem is getting the hose wiggled into the drain port so it doesn't leak.

You will never find a lack of people like this. It's up to you whether or not to continue obliging them in conversation. Let them say what they want to say, realize they're woefully uneducated, and just politely remove yourself from their presence and vape on. I quote these often:

"Never argue with an idiot. They'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

and

"Never argue with a fool. Onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

Let them have their say, nod, smile, and walk away. Don't feel obligated to refute them, especially in front of other people. If you're concerned about what THEY may think, it's not their brains you should be worried about, it should be your own. Let them come up with their own conclusions.

I never step into any conversation vape-related when I know the participants are obviously wrong. Of course, I could step in, throw my knowledge around, and feel good about how much more I know than they do. But in the end, it usually isn't even worth that much.

When I was smoking, which wasn't that long ago, I despised it when people would try to educate me as to why smoking was bad. I'd usually look at the side of my pack and say "This thing says its bad for pregnant women, so I guess I'm safe." They'd usually get the hint.

For that reason, and many other reasons like Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormon missionaries, I don't try to convert anyone. If they inquire, I'll give them my honest opinion. Not that I have anything against vapers trying to convert random smokers.

There's some real rocket surgeons out there though. I guess we all need some of those around for entertainment.

Problem is that the idiots are breeding faster than the non-idiots; natural selection doesn't work anymore because society protects the weak (" awwww, look at the cute little idiot! We should remove him from the middle of the highway so he doesn't get hurt")
Only way to avoid it is to quit trying to carry on conversations with people whose intelligence has not been verified......ahhhhh crap, I just did it!

I gave up long ago.

ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check
for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you
began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive,
nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and
practising law.

Completely agree with what you're saying; the point of the post wasn't about arguing with these guys, it was for a good laugh. I was so dumbfounded that I had to share it.

I used to have a secretary who was a real piece of work. Loud, obnoxious, vulgar, and just down-right ignorant. I was ready to go off on her one day, but decided to go out to lunch. The deli had a bunch of quotes on the wall from famous writers, and it was like an epiphany when I saw this one:

"I never make the mistake of arguing with people for whose opinions I have no respect."
- Edward Gibbon

I've never forgotten that one. It's come to mind so many times since then, and not just with her.

so sad....

And unfortunately he (and the millions like him) probably votes which explains why we have the current train wreck in Washington.

I wonder if he had any clue that every time he breathes he gets water in his lungs and without water in his lungs he would be worse off then inhaling analog tar...

E-cig education is really paramount but sometimes, you get a student that just can't get it - and that holds true even if teaching them math. Obviously, the OP's guy was a the bane of his math teacher. Sometimes you just have to know when to fold and walk away. Its better for the gene pool.
