Ya know.. we all breathed water essentially for the first 9 months of our lives. The first time we were forced to breath air it was a shock to our system and our bodies had to adjust. It's not that we are not capable of doing it but we drown because oxygen gets cut off. We don't have the right liquid to breath, regular water isn't it - no where near enough oxygen in a form our lungs can assimilate. We can and do breath water vapor in the form of e-cigs, steam, humidity just nicely because it's not causing our bodies to starve for oxygen.

We can even breath liquid still - remember the movie The Abyss where they had to breath liquid inside the diving helmet to balance the pressure on the lungs at low depths? That is real technology and deep sea divers with the right training and equipment have been doing it for years now.

Pneumonia is not caused by liquid in the lungs, but by a bacteria. The lungs filling with liquid can be a side effect of getting pneumonia.

See What Causes Water in the Lungs? | eHow.com and Causes of pneumonia or just do searches for what is Pneumonia and what causes water in the lungs (called pulmonary edema).

Arm yourself with these facts and next time someone says you'll get pneumonia from inhaling water vapor you'll know what to tell them.

I think the most moronic thing I've heard someone say about E-cigs is from a certain Dr. Eisenberry (I think thats his name).

He conducted studies on E-cigs, and ascertained that they provide no nicotine whatsoever and stated that it's equivalent to sucking on an unlit cigarette. The brain is merely "tricking" the body into thinking it's getting nicotine.

Anyhow, if that's the case, it's working for me.

Yep, but the particles are so small that they can't block the tiny passages in your lungs. John Phoenix is exactly right, pneumonia is a symptom caused by bacterial infection of the lungs themselves. First, the lungs need to be damaged or the immune system compromised. Then, a bacterial infection takes hold. After that, pneumonia can develop.

It's kind of like saying not getting enough calcium causes bone fractures. The reduced calcium intake must occur over a long enough time to allow bone density to fall. Then, the bone has to be physically broken. The only difference is that vapor doesn't damage your lungs or compromise your immune system.

Folks will believe anything if it is remotely conceivable, facts be damned

Oh yeah, heard that one on the radio. Radio talk shows are a great way to get material for this thread! Folks on these forums have used home nicotine tests (meant for busting your kids for smoking) to conduct their own controlled studies. They get plenty of nicotine, the non-vapers in the house don't get any.

Before we start believing another myth, I must point out that we do inhale and exhale water vapor. The combination of the water and the PG/VG create a vapor that is more persistent than steam and carries nicotine better than water alone can. Without the water, there is no vapor.

Everyone inhales and exhales water vapor. We consist of mostly water. Ever breath outside on a chilly day? If our lungs contained no water we would be in trouble.

My favorites -

3. This one is pretty common. "you exhale water vapor". As OP stated, water has nothing to do with it.

So do they....? So doesn't everything that breathes air? I mean... really? I honestly can't believe some people are able to function with this level of ignorance. You bleed water too! good grief we should just ban bleeding and get it over with! and breathing. and a host of other functions that are enjoyed by humans and animals that involved ingesting or expelling water.

I haven't gone through the thread, just to add to this.

"You haven't really quit cigarette smoking." My response: Have I lit up? Nope. Is this smoke or vapor? Vapor. Do I still have a nic habit? Yes. Have I bought a pack of cigarettes in X months? Nope.

"Doesn't that have oil in it?" My response: It doesn't have the full essence of oil (or however someone explain it to me) aka the bad oil.

"Why don't you use the patch, gum, or Chantix?" My response: My uncle died from the patch. That's a no right there. I don't need to have a gum chewing addiction. Chewing nicotine sounds absolutely orally destructive and deadly. Don't even get me STARTED on Chantix, especially with the new article about the "secret, hidden results of deaths related to Chantix.

"Why the e-cigarette?" Because it helps me with my hand-to-mouth addiction, which is extremely helpful to stay away from cigarettes. I enjoy it, I feel better, and I'm not angry about quitting.

People love drama. Drama causes ignorance. Ignorance causes uprising. It doesn't matter anymore what it is about, as long as someone gets off by driving other people insane.

Schadenfreude, a lovely German term, is everywhere. The word is defined as such: Please derived by someone else's misfortune. Most of the anti-e-cigarette followers just want to see us miserable over the FDA/governmental issues with e-cigarettes because "we shouldn't have smoked in the first place". I was told to my face that this lady was happy that I'd be miserable about e-cigarettes being banned because of the quote I just put there. She told me that she'd be happier to see smokers suffer if the e-cigarette was banned because there shouldn't be a product that assimilates cigarettes and that might help because it's an "excuse" to not truly quit. Mind you, if I hadn't walked away, I would have probably gotten arrested for disturbing the peace, but I did successfully leave the building. People f:censored:cking suck.

Really now?
I hate naysayers just as much as the next vaper, but...
I recommend to anyone choosing to make quips and smart remarks in attempt to "stick up for ecigs" actually know what they're talking about so that they don't make themselves look ignorant or accidentally prove the naysayer's points....

My Riva was in transit when I went in for my scheduled doctor's appt. I had to tell her that my latest attempt to quit smoking had failed. There have been many such attempts. I was trying to figure out a delicate way to broach the subject of vaping when she surprised me by mentioning it first. She didn't give me an overt recommendation, but told me that she had a few patients that had used PVs after many failed attempt to quit and that they seemed to work for those patients. Wow!

I'm new to this, so only one person asked about it. I told them it was my nicotine inhaler. They had seen me before with the little plastic nicotine inhaler prescribed by my doctor and asked if my Riva was a new model. I simply said that the Riva works better than the old one.

It's interesting, though. I do have a prescription for a nicotine inhaler and have 200 cartridges for it in my medicine cabinet. It also has added chemicals to promote the vapor, but the vapor is virtually tasteless and invisible so it is very easy to under or over-dose. It looks like a stubby plastic cigar.

I had some of those. My mom gave them to me (I'm 51). They worked for her, and helped me too. After I ran out of those - discovered vaping. Tastes better and works better. And, so far anyway, I don't have to blow $200 on an office visit and make follow-up appointment$.

I'll jump in on this thread.

I actually get better support for vaping from my mom and in-laws(all in their 80's) than I do from my grown children.

My oldest daughter, 34, an ex-smoker, doesn't like the look of it because it looks like I'm still smoking. And that I've simply traded one addiction for another.

My next daughter, 33, won't let me vape in front of her children, just in case their is 2nd hand nicotine from my vapor. She's also concerned about my blood pressure being too high becasue of the nicotene. Gosh, I smoked for over 35 years, duh!

My son, 30, an ex-smoker, is worried about me ODing on nicotene, since I am pretty much a chain vaper. I tell him that I vape low nic and not too worry, but he thinks I vape too much.

My youngest son, 28, an ex-smoker, doesn't think I should vape in front of my grandchildren because I enjoy it too much, and it will be a bad influence on them. When I was killing myself with ciggies I understood that, but gimme a break. He can drink one beer after another with the children around, and that's okay though.

All of my children want to know how long it will take me to quit smoking. I tell them that I have. Then they ask me how long I'll need to be vaping until I quit altogether. I tell them, "Maybe never".

Let me say I love my family to pieces and we are all very close, but I am surprised by their self-righteous reactions to my vaping. It was less confrontational when I was smoking ciggies. I guess what bothers them is the fact that I wanted to quit smoking, but I don't want to quit vaping.

My hubby vapes as well. He has given up his 3 yr. nic gum habit and smoking cigars. We have decided that we are in full support of one another, and that is all that matters.

He better not drink that beer in front of his kids, what kind of role model is that? And no coffee, or TV or radio or dancing or swear words or unhealthy food or or or... I mean no offense, but tell your kids to lighten up. If Gma likes her E-cig then thats awesome. I dont know how anyone could be around vapor for more than 5 minutes and still think its as bad as cigs. These days when I encounter a smoker (and I know that they are a smoker because they REEK) I think "Aww, that is aweful, did I smell like that when I smoked?"

But its good you do get support, especially from your husband. I have kinda the same thing going on with my in-laws. They are all never-smokers and all I hear from them is "now when are you gonna quit that thing?" My mom, who quit smoking about 15 years ago is so happy and proud of me. She asks what my plan is for phasing out e-cigs, but she asks in a very nice way and doesnt give me patronizing stares when I answer "I dont have a plan to quit it yet". Hang in there and keep on vaping!
