Quite a lot of people do cough initially when they stop smoking and it seems to be for two main reasons - the system getting rid of the gunk that smoking has produced and the fact that eliquid doesn't have the cough reflex suppressant additives that Big Terbaccy puts into its blends.

There are additional factors to do with allergies as has already been mentioned.

If the cough continues or you are worried the best advice is still to see a medic.

I have been vaping for a month with a pod kit (voopoo argus air) using pnp coil .8 ohm for MTL. I was smoking for more than 10 years and I want to quit but everytime I vape I feel a tightness on my chest and it induces me to cough. When I am smoking an analog it is so smooth I don't even cough. I really want to quit smoking but with this unpleasant experience on vaping it is hard to leave smoking. My juice is a salt nic with 24mg/ml nicotine strength.

When I first started vaping I was using vaporesso gtx one 1.2 ohm mtl. The tank has about 6 holes and I been using at 1 hole with a nicotine strength of 6 mg 50/50 which was perfect for me.
I got my dad into vaping as well. He was a heavy smoker and used to smoke more than a pack of shag a day. I bought him 18 mg nicotine strength to start with and after a month he lower down to 12 mg nicotine. ( no nic salt) Nic salt is pretty heavy for the throat to start with.
The 0.8 ohm is more of a dtl coil and it will not give u the tightness similar to a cigarette. To archive the satisfaction of a cigarette, I advise u to use higher ohm coils, above 1 ohms.
It helped me and my dad to quit smoking and hopefully will help u too.

Also, I didn't see wattage mentioned.

Tuning in the airflow worked for me.
For others it could be the flavouring, the amount of PG or VG or too high (or even, too low) a wattage (burning the wick/liquid or improperly vaporised liquid).
As mentioned ^ ( ;) )
There's a "sweet spot" that works. Too low, and it doesn't get atomized well, vape fog drops are too big, and it's an irritant. Particularly at 24 mg! Too high, and it "burns" and produces nasty chemicals, tastes bad and is hard on the coil/wick.

Then there's air flow. Lots of air flow is better, IMO, but that's hard to pull off for MTL. DTL works better that way, maybe try that. Vaping isn't smoking, so DTL usually works better, with lots of air.

One trick that people use is to push the button and start the sizzle before you actually take it in. So I see people push the button and "sizzle" as they bring it up to their mouth. Kind of pre-loading it, assuming it's not an auto of course.

:2c: :) Good luck.

Thanks, I chose nic salts because I have read online that nic salts were made so we can vape smoother high nic juices. It was the other way around, I will try freebase.

I'm old at this, so what am I doing here??
Some coughing at first is normal. Excessive coughing is not! So there is a problem.
Nice thing about vaping is that when there is a problem, there is always a solution.
So keep trying, and find the solution.

A (not so fond) memory was that my first bottle of e-liquid (Calaber Red & White) gave me an aftertaste like I had been siphoning gasoline. Ten years later I still remember that taste. (it was that bad)
Remedy = Get a different flavor. A bottle of good ole RY4 solved that problem.
So don't be afraid to try different things ... and remember ... every problem has a solution.

Then the last line of my post, which you have omitted, by accident or design, to include, applies - "If the cough continues or you are worried then the best advice is to see a medic."

I cannot say more and will now drop out of this thread.

    Things I did:

    * Decrease nic level. Better?
    * Change juice from PG to VG only. I stopped here. Yay.
    * Change the eliquid you're using. At 50/50, velvet vapor's root beer left me coughing. Thinned to 30/70 with some VG, it's now my favorite. Some flavors are just heavy. Small sampler packs are your friend.
    * Heat matters. I vape 20watts, 180c with a sub ohm coil at .5. Cool, flavorful and non issues.

It takes a bit of experimentation, but you'll get it! It's a healthier, more flavorful and fun way to inhale just about anything other than real baking cake fumes in the kitchen. Or, rice when it's cooking. That always gets me too.

    Good luck and be safe!

I am using a 24mg salt nic with 50vg/50pg ratio I guess. the 1st 2 weeks of me vaping was not a really bad experience but now I can't vape well. I cough everytime I vape. I even change coils every week.

Here is something I posted awhile back to Someone who had a Similar Cough as you have...

Hi Ginette. Welcome to the ECF.

If I use e-Liquids with more that 30 or 35% PG, I get that Popcorn Husk caught in the throat Cough after a Day or So.

70% PG would make me sound like Tom Waits with a Chest Cold.

I'd suggest trying some Lower PG e-Liquids and see if things get better.

Babadook, excessive wattage can cause the problem you are having. Make sure that your wick is thoroughly saturated. A wick on the dry side can be harsh. Find the sweet spot through experimentation.

24mg juice is somewhat equivalent to a full flavored cigarette. I started vaping at 24mg and found it satisfying after decades of smoking Marlboro Reds. You may need to experiment with various strengths to see what nic level suits you.

If there's a vape shop near you, stop in and try some of their prefilled atomizers to find a juice that you like. Most vape shops have prefilled tanks to try and will give you a disposable drip tip to sample the juices. You just move the drip tip from tank to tank and vape to try different flavors and brands.
