Why do people seem anxious for you to quit vaping, too?

Almost everyone I know who knows that I've been doing this instead of analogs for a week has said the same thing: "Congratulations! That's awesome! Because now you can back down on the nicotine until you're not doing that any more, either, right?"

I've finally just taken to saying, "I'm not concerned with quitting nicotine." Because I'm not. And it seems many on this forum have vaped for years and are happy doing it. But people seem disappointed that I am not driving to "really quit" in THEIR eyes.

If I had to tell myself that I needed to cut down and quit THIS too, I'd be very discouraged. Quitting smoking is a VERY BIG DEAL for me, and I'm fine with it. No, more than fine - I'm ecstatic!

Do other people have the same experience with comments from others?

And this is one of the reasons many people don't even try vaping. They think it's part of some program, Nicotine Anonymous? They don't realize yet vaping is cool, vaping is fun, sure it can save your life by getting you away from the analogs, but it doesn't have to be some type of 12 step program to ween yourself off nicotine. Quitting smoking (or whatever reason you're using it) can be the reward in and of itself. People don't like to feel like they have a problem, so in their minds vaping is admitting they have a problem. A friend of mine saw me vaping and asked if it "worked" because he had tried the patch and the gum and it didn't work for him. Well, of course it didn't, the gum tastes crappy and what fun is sticking a patch on your arm?

before i started vaping, i saw it as a cessation tool. thats the whole reason i got into vaping. if i thought that, im sure others do too. i never knew just how much fun it was until i made the switch. i dont plan on stopping anytime soon but i am taking steps down in my nic intake in hopes to eventually be nic free.

most people are just ignorant (not to be confused with stupid) about vaping. i know i was! i havent had anyone ask me when im going to quit vaping, thank goodness. so far everyone has been extremely supportive and proud of me to get off the smokes. my coworkers especially! at least one person a day asks me how i am doing and applaud me. several ask me what the flavor of the day is and i have a blast trying to describe unicorn poop or shmuffer shmutter. even had a couple inquire about where to purchase a starter set. ive been extremely blessed!

My mother was bad about this after I first switched. Over 3 years and a bunch of repetition later, I have finally convinced her that I function better on nicotine, that it isn't any worse than caffeine, and I'm actually protecting myself from alzheimers, airborne illnesses, and going back to smoking. She seems to have accepted it.

lol, why don't you just quit it all together? response, "I don't smoke I vape!!" I have no intentions of not vaping! Being ecstatic and an advocate about vaping seems to come with the territory, along with feeling better, being more positive and productive, and learning more and more about what is possible.

If I have time, talk to them a little, find out what 'marginal' habits they have, then throw out some pseudo-science on how "their" bad habit/addiction is affecting their health/global warming/what ever. I'm retired, I've got time to spare. And since I'm off the coffin nails, I've even got more time to devote to YOUR problems!

People have said similar things to me. I don't worry about it. Sometimes I'll say something like "I've quit smoking. I don't know whether I will quit vaping," just so they know that's not necessarily the plan.

my gf (whom has never had any vices, ie smoking, drinking etc..notice its always those kinda people? ) says it all the time...kinda sucks when she does because like you said, quitting is a huge deal to me as well, ill happily deal with the nic that i vape if it helps me stay off the other 10 million chemicals i had everyday for 20 yrs...

when she really annoys me about it ill finally tell her ya maybe i should quit vaping because now i see how horrible your food really tastes, how bad your perfume really smells, and ill sleep more because i wont have the wind to hang out with you in the wee hrs of the night

lol jk jk..keep on vaping friends, im enjoying and loving it all

Yeah, I've gotten that too. Funny how nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits. A woman at a bar who had asked me about my vape and how I quit analogs, then asked, "Well you ARE going to quit that too aren't you?" When I said no she pressed me about it, apparently upset that I had something I enjoyed and didn't want to quit. Looking at the drink in her hand I asked if she was going to quit that.

When I started vaping I told Wifey. . .I could switch off of tabacco using e-cigs. (52 years of tobacco, 2.5 PAD when I started vaping). And my intent was to. . .First: quit tobacco; Second: gradually wean myself off of nicotine; and Third: quit vaping. It took me about 3 years, but Feb 6th was my last vape. Wifey really wanted me to quit. It didn't really bother her. . .she just didn't like the idea of me inhaling anything. I sort of got the idea that that was what most people that started vaping had in mind. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm not typical. But, I certainly don't give a tinkers dang if everybody that wants to vapes their heads off. Don't mind being around a bunch of vapers. . .Can't say the same 'bout smokers. JMHO

Cheers, otrpu

My brother asks me how long till your off that now...
I am slowly cutting down on my nic level... have gone from 18 to 9 in 4 months.
But the best part to me is that I have not gained any weight!!! I have actually lost over 10 lbs.
When I get a craving for something sweet or ? I pick a flavor... no need to raid the fridge!!!
I don't think I will ever quit vaping... I love it!!!

It's just the stimga associated with tobacco use. And non-vapors, the general public, see vaping as analogous to smoking.

This was mentioned on another thread, but applies here. There are so many types of addiction out there. Some are socially acceptable, some are not. And I am just pulling percentages out of the air here, but based on people I know, my experiences in life, most people indulge in a behavior that could be considered addiction-esque, whether a known addicting chemical is being used or not. Our brain processes the experience of rewards with the release of pleasure hormones. This make us feel elated, high. It doesn't matter what your activity is, you can invoke a pavlovian response to it and crave that high and reinforce it over and over again. I don't know how many Americans drink coffee every morning, but I would guess 70%, maybe 60%. The same person asking you if have quit vaping, too likely has some closeted or exposed addiction type of process going on their life as well, they just may not be self-aware.

I always try to keep in mind that when people speak, they usually project themselves and their motives/actions/reasons for doing things onto you. They speak from who they are, not who you are. So, that tells me that person has an addiction demon somewhere that is eating away at his/her soul and they are merely projecting that onto you, that you need to also rid the demeon (which may or may not be a demon for you) :2c:

I actually haven't gotten that yet from anyone. My friends and family are happy that I'm not smoking anymore (My nephew has been after me to quit since he was around 4, lol) and my niece and nephew think it's cool that their uncle vapes, lol.

Although I have no plan in the making to quit vaping, odds are I won't be vaping anymore in 100 years.

I really see no reason to even consider quitting vape. Why? It hasn't been shown to be harmful, it keeps me off smokes, I am happier, my nic is down, not because of tying to cut nicotine out, but I had to. When I started to vape at 15 watts+ and my builds keep improving, the nic delivery was just so much more intense that it would take almost an hour to come down after a vape break at work. So now I'm down from 24mg to 12mg. And if I vape to much at 30+ watts I'll have to drop it some more. The only downside to vaping is the occasional VG buggers.

When I did talk to my mother about it, and she used the I just asked god to take my desire to smoke away, I threw in it back at her, hey I haven't had a drink in 20 years, when are you going to stop, oh no, I'm not going to stop having my 2 gin and tonics, that's all I have at night. She quickly agreed that vape wasn't a bad thing after all and that not smoking was a good thing.
