Why do people seem anxious for you to quit vaping, too?

Almost everyone I know who knows that I've been doing this instead of analogs for a week has said the same thing: "Congratulations! That's awesome! Because now you can back down on the nicotine until you're not doing that any more, either, right?"

I've finally just taken to saying, "I'm not concerned with quitting nicotine." Because I'm not. And it seems many on this forum have vaped for years and are happy doing it. But people seem disappointed that I am not driving to "really quit" in THEIR eyes.

If I had to tell myself that I needed to cut down and quit THIS too, I'd be very discouraged. Quitting smoking is a VERY BIG DEAL for me, and I'm fine with it. No, more than fine - I'm ecstatic!

Do other people have the same experience with comments from others?

Good for you, I had a very similar experience with someone over the weekend. They are uninformed and automatically assume anything with nicotine will cause you to get cancer.

Oh yeah.

My children are thrilled with my vaping, and understand that I have quit smoking, and are happy if I keep vaping for the rest of my life.

My parents, on the other hand, never stop asking me when I'm going to step down my nicotine so I can really quit. Keep in mind, I am fifty-something ffff-ing years old.

I have also enjoyed my caffeine all my life. Typically drink eight cans of diet soda a day. Have been concerned these last few years about the long term effects of aspartame, but didn't want to go back to sugared soda in order to get the caffeine. My e-liquid DIY got me thinking - could I buy caffeine and just add it to water? Sure enough, I can.

This last weekend, I showed up at my parent's house for the usual Sunday afternoon visit with a water bottle instead of diet soda. I explained to them that it's caffinated water that I make myself. First question out of their mouths was, "So you could slowly cut the caffeine down to zero, just like you could with nicotine in your e-cigs, right?"

"Well, yes I could, but I have no intention of doing so, just like I have no intention of cutting my nicotine levels." All I get is that disapproving face in response. It hurts.

I am happy that my children are thrilled with both my changes, but hurt by my parents' responses. Do we ever outgrow our desire for our parents' approval??? I'll tell you one thing, my parents have taught me a lot about being a parent, but not in any way they would recognize.

My kids have always wanted me to quit, but they're not too thrilled with this. My best friend, who never smoked, was concerned that I taper off the vaping too; the people I play music with immediately asked how long it would take me to quit nicotine this way. The only "absolute" support I have gotten was in this forum! (Thanks!) But it's just plain odd.

Oh - and I notice that I broke even today on equipment costs. I have two batteries and a couple days' worth of juice and several tanks, so I should be good to go and now saving money every day (although that wasn't a motivator, it's still a nice thing!)

So my at my shrink today, he asked how I was doing not smoking (he had really been pushing me to quit like everyone else). I said, "Well, I am not smoking cigarettes anymore." He said, with raised eyebrows, "What ARE you smoking?" I laughed and told him I was vaping, but down to 6 mg which is just fine with me and where I plan to stay. He said, "Oh," and then proceeded with the rest of the regular 15 minute visit questions required for my meds (I suffer from PTSD but that is beside the point...I always feel like I have to expound on that for some insane - no pun intended - reason). He didn't care. My beloved doesn't care. My folks are thrilled I am cigarette free, my dentist is happy, my friends are happy. Most of all, I am happy. And no one but those on here may ever fully understand and I will take that. because the vapers here rock. 'nuff said.

New here to this whole vaping thing. Has been just over a month and honestly I love it. I had no intentions to quit analog but after seeing a friend switch over I decided to give it a try. Have not had a normal cigarette since I got home from the vape store. My husband even gave it a try and plans to use it to quit completely.
My friend and I have also managed to get several people at work to join our little "cult" but there are still those people that have to be a party pooper. Have had several people, my husband included, ask when I plan to quit. Honestly probably never, I remind them I am no longer polluting their air space so they need to get off my back about it.

I hear it also, from the types you might expect it to come from.... Take that any way you want..
Most of these people think they are smart or educated somewhat.. OK - I agree..
When they say this, I tell them to Google "should I quit Vaping" - or "Is Vaping bad for you"
Results are the 19 out of 20+ results come back with basically there is no medical harm to you or others while vaping..
some links to a comparison of caffeine, and a bunch of "ifs" "maybes" "likely to's" "not meant to be inhaled" and "not enough studies"
It's hard to find any real medical problems arising out of vaping.. unless you realm into the beyond the normal "everything can be harmful if abused tactics".. What else can you do ?

I have 0 intentions quitting vaping. I'm truly not even sure that I plan to drop my nicotine, simply because I don't see a point. A: I freakin love this community. We are some supportive mofos, and I truly dig that. B: Hobbyist communities are just cool as hell, and I missed the only other one that I truly ever cared about, and that was the computer hobbyist days. I was just born too late. :( Why would I give one up that I found and love?

As far as the vaping itself, I love techy stuff. I love OLED screens and buttons and shiny chrome. Unlike cigarettes, I can tailor my device for ME. That's awesome. Just another one of those things I'd hate to give up.

I personally believe there are many factors associated with the ops question. One if the larger issues for me is people who have never had an addiction like analogs therefore don't understand the giant step, no, leap of faith I took to crush the pack and start vaping. I was proud as hell with myself and didn't get near the encouragement I felt myself unless it was a current or former smoker.. The second most common for me was the uneducated folks who only listen to the television and believe they are experts on the topic. What I did apart from the obvious health benefits I felt first hand was to educate myself on the topic. Now I just strive to be my own encouragement. A big one for me was finding out that caffeine is largely more harmful to the human body than certain doses of nicotine in regard to the physical effects on the body at the time of consumption. What that bit of information gave me was ammunition...next time I heard the question"when are you going to quit totally?" I can reply in various ways. "the same time you stop drinking coffee, soda, and juices from concentrate." Or "when you stop eating anything with harmful chemicals in it like pretty much anything in a grocery store."

The worst was my sister. A former smoker herself who has always been judgmental about y smoking.

Her, "but you are still addicted to the drug"

My response of, "have you quit caffeine out of your diet yet" sort of shut her up.

Funny, my parents have been the most supportive of it. My mom even called me up from Costco one day saying that they had Blu cartridges for sale tha she would buy me. :). I only used Blu's for like 3 weeks, and that was a couple of months ago, but it made me smile.

The friends I have converted are just thankful that I took it up so they found out about it too.

Anyone else? Meh, they can go fly a kite for all I care. Life is too short to give a crud about what everyone else thinks. If they are not supportive, I just ignore them and move on.

My mother was bad about this after I first switched. Over 3 years and a bunch of repetition later, I have finally convinced her that I function better on nicotine, that it isn't any worse than caffeine, and I'm actually protecting myself from alzheimers, airborne illnesses, and going back to smoking. She seems to have accepted it.
Yeah, I really think those are the correct arguments to be making...

--Nicotine improves memory, concentration, and attention
--Nicotine is a stimulant with similar physical effect and risk profile as caffeine
--Nicotine may help in preventing Alzheimers and Parkinsons
--Propylene glycol is a fairly potent germicidal agent

When people understand those four things, there is really no room left for any objections.

U are never gonna get thru to ppl. So just let them say what they are gonna say and tell them, "that's cool."
I don't agree that you are never going to get through to people.
In fact, I have "gotten through" to every single one of my friends and family members.

It is, however, possible that there are one or two that are maybe not entirely convinced yet.
But if there are any such people, they have at least developed the good sense to keep their mouths shut around me.
:)

What those people don't know is big tobacco paid them to say that.
Actually, it's pretty much always Big Pharma that is paying them to say these things.

I find that the "now you can taper off your nicotine" comments come from non-smokers. Perfectly understandable considering they've never experienced the pleasure one derives from smoking. They just see it as addiction, nothing more.

Like yourself, I liked smoking...but I didn't like them continually jacking the price up. I was lucky enough to find e-cigs. I used to try to explain away those types of negative comments, but I've learned to accept them for what they were and disregard them.

Mostly these days I get enthusiastic comments. Probably has to do with people becoming more exposed to them. Inevitably, someone will ask me what the blinking red light is. I tell them it indicates my battery needs to be changed.

(Blank look)

"On my cigarette", I go on.

(Blank state)

I then demonstrate by allowing them to see me inhale and exhale.

"OH! THAT'S ONE OF THOSE ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES! It doesn't look like the one's I've seen. What kind IS it!?"

(Gotta love it.)

Ultimately - I wouldn't mind weening off the nicotine...simply because it's not a necessary ingredient to an enjoyable vape.

For me it is...

I've made some batches of eliquid with no nic (or very low nic) but always end up adding some nic back into it. The nicotine adds to the throat hit, as well as providing the calming (chemical) effects of a cigarette. I do still use low nic (about 5mg) eliquid in my drip attys when chain vaping, but for the regular "throughout the day" vape in my clearo's I run around 25mg.

I also find that the less nic in the juice, the more I feel the need to vape. What I mean by that is with a higher nic juice I can take a nice drag and put it down for a while, whereas a lower nic juice makes me want to keep vaping (like my body is trying to get the nic it wants by vaping more).
