Great thread. For me, deciding where to vape is a mix of politeness, consideration, reason, and what I can get away with. At home when I smoked, it was never inside ... always on the back deck. But now I vape on the couch, at the computer, wherever. It's not smoke and the people I live with know that. I also vape at work, but in my office... never in the halls. I guess you could say I was doing it on the sly since I was so selective about where I vaped... but a month ago my boss walked in just as I was exhaling and asked what the smoke was and I incoherently mumbled a string of words, "Not smoke, vapor, quit smoking thingie, two weeks since I've had a cigarette..." and he just smiled and said, "Good for you, keep it up." Not everyone is that lucky... PBusardo mentioned in one of his recent vids that his employers have asked him to go outside to vape. I'm not sure how I feel about this ... for one thing, I've spent several winters in Rochester, NY. Second, I know that some employers are going to send vapers out to the designated smoking area (rather than letting them wander around loose or creating a special area just for them). To me, that's a little like telling an alcoholic that he's gotta imbibe his substitute beverage of choice at the local bar. Forcing someone who's trying to quit tobacco with vapor to hang out with the smokers seems pretty unfair but I know it's probably being done.
As for vaping in public areas... I don't consider what I do to be the same as smoking so I don't feel obligated to abide by "No Smoking" signs. On the other hand, I try very hard to consider the feelings of others... I won't vape in a checkout line full of people at WalMart, but I might take a vape or two in the aisles when I'm reasonably far away from others. I'm not sneaky about it, just considerate and discreet.
Like I said, everyone (vapers, non vapers, employers) need to employ politeness, consideration and reason. If some of your employees want to vape and you think it's the same as tobacco smoke, educate yourself. Compromises are possible, everyone can be happy. Part of compromise is adequate knowledge on the part of both sides. Non-vapers need to learn about vaping, vapers need to teach them... being a "vape activist" by just whipping out an eCig with an air of entitlement and blowing clouds is no way to get the word out. Ask first... "Do you mind if I vape? It's not smoke, etc., etc..." can go a long way toward putting people at ease and educating them at the same time.
