Why do vapers expect to be treated differently than smokers?

I vape anywhere i like, its not hurting anyone so people shouldn't expect you to stop vaping in there place, ive just got back off holiday and i was vaping everywhere, in the main centre pub, in the other pub, in the arcades etc, nobody said anything to me, i actually couldn't believe how many people i saw who was also vaping.

I went to the petrol station yesterday and was vaping, but i totally forgot that i was doing it, and the security guard said to me, flame? i said no mate no flame lol and left me to it

Vapers think of it like this: It doesn't smell like smoke, and it doesn't harm anyone. I'm not up in their face. Therefore, I'm "vaping respectfully".

Non-smokers see it like this: I see people vaping/smoking. It bothers me...................

We are focused on how it's so much less offensive and figure "they shouldn't be bothered because it only looks like smoke". What we miss is that the fact that it looks like smoke is EXACTLY what they don't like.

Solution? Stealth-vape!.......................

This is NOT the same as just holding in the vapor so they don't see you exhale, but still see you taking a drag. That is still insulting to them, becuase they can still see you doing it.

This is just amazing. If some random person doesn't like the "look" of someone vaping, because the "appearance" in and of itself is somehow "insulting" to them, it is the vapers "responsibility" to hide and sneak vape like an eight year old just so the very sight of us won't "offend" this random person.

Welcome to the United States of Sheep.

This "idea" is just plain insulting and offensive.

The public needs to learn about VAPING!!!... I will continue to Teach them everywhere I go... I am Over 2.5 years Vaping, Having Dozens of friends and family make the switch to Vaping,(except my ..... sister in-law, who continues to smoke in front of her kids) and thousands of people seeing me Vaping. Why on earth would anyone continue to categorize themselves as a Smoker!!! I will NOT Vape with Smokers, We are NOT the same.

See heres the thing, i love vaping. I vape in my car and at home and in smoking sections, thats it. Ive donated to casaa, i inform all of my freinds and family and i educate people in the smoking sections of what im doing. But like i said, heres the thing, I was at disneyland recently with my family. Were sitting in the cart getting ready to go on the ride and right in front of us theres this 18 year old kid just vaping away. Blowing vapor clouds all up in my wife and familys faces right on the ride. Nobody was even saying anything to him. So i tapped on his shoulder and said "come on man, be respectful about what you do". Now i know second hand vapor doesnt hurt my health but thats beside the point.
Regardless of wether or not it effects my health, the minute your vapor clouds or smoke start getting all up in my faces and my familys, than that becomes an issue of crossing my personal boundaries. And its funny because i was the only one to say anything to the guy and yet i am an all day vaporer myself. As a vapor, i feel yes you have your rights, but everything is not all about you, and realize others around you have personal space and rights as well.

Any pleasure you choose to partake in shouldn't be detrimental to others' well-being, I think that's a fundamental aspect of being empathic.

As long as the court is out and there is no solidified consensus on whether second-hand vapour causes harm to others, I think it makes sense to restrict vaping to the same degree as smoking.

As soon as conclusive evidence shows second-hand vapour causes no harm to others, people should stop .....ing about it.

I understand all the views and points in this thread. As much as we "know" it should be allowed everywhere at the end of the day it just doesn't work like that and shouldn't be expected to. Smoking was allowed everywhere for decades but those days are long long over with. We now live in a society that is prohibiting smoking everywhere including outdoors is some areas.

If it looks like a duck (vapor does look like smoke) and talks like a duck (pulling on a pv and inhaling) then it's a duck. And it will continue that way in many ways until our beloved government (with the help of BT) publicly declare that it's 100% scientifically proven safe. I want complete acceptance as much as the next guy but the reality is what it is and shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone.

Also, telling somebody that it's 100% safe is a lie because we don't know. Are we 99% sure it is? Yep, but we still don't know for certain. There has not been enough analysis to make the 100% conclusion. That time will come but it will require patience. In the mean time we should all be very respectful of others perceptions and not argue too much about it when there is a confrontation.

Great thread. For me, deciding where to vape is a mix of politeness, consideration, reason, and what I can get away with. At home when I smoked, it was never inside ... always on the back deck. But now I vape on the couch, at the computer, wherever. It's not smoke and the people I live with know that. I also vape at work, but in my office... never in the halls. I guess you could say I was doing it on the sly since I was so selective about where I vaped... but a month ago my boss walked in just as I was exhaling and asked what the smoke was and I incoherently mumbled a string of words, "Not smoke, vapor, quit smoking thingie, two weeks since I've had a cigarette..." and he just smiled and said, "Good for you, keep it up." Not everyone is that lucky... PBusardo mentioned in one of his recent vids that his employers have asked him to go outside to vape. I'm not sure how I feel about this ... for one thing, I've spent several winters in Rochester, NY. Second, I know that some employers are going to send vapers out to the designated smoking area (rather than letting them wander around loose or creating a special area just for them). To me, that's a little like telling an alcoholic that he's gotta imbibe his substitute beverage of choice at the local bar. Forcing someone who's trying to quit tobacco with vapor to hang out with the smokers seems pretty unfair but I know it's probably being done.

As for vaping in public areas... I don't consider what I do to be the same as smoking so I don't feel obligated to abide by "No Smoking" signs. On the other hand, I try very hard to consider the feelings of others... I won't vape in a checkout line full of people at WalMart, but I might take a vape or two in the aisles when I'm reasonably far away from others. I'm not sneaky about it, just considerate and discreet.

Like I said, everyone (vapers, non vapers, employers) need to employ politeness, consideration and reason. If some of your employees want to vape and you think it's the same as tobacco smoke, educate yourself. Compromises are possible, everyone can be happy. Part of compromise is adequate knowledge on the part of both sides. Non-vapers need to learn about vaping, vapers need to teach them... being a "vape activist" by just whipping out an eCig with an air of entitlement and blowing clouds is no way to get the word out. Ask first... "Do you mind if I vape? It's not smoke, etc., etc..." can go a long way toward putting people at ease and educating them at the same time.

Yeah, that is just plain rude.
What is needed is common courtesy, nothing more, nothing less.

Unfortunately, teenagers are often in short supply.

Blowing vapor clouds all up in my wife and familys faces right on the ride. Nobody was even saying anything to him. So i tapped on his shoulder and said "come on man, be respectful about what you do". Now i know second hand vapor doesnt hurt my health but thats beside the point.
I'm glad you did, and I would have done the same.

It doesn't come as any surprise, and it's our own fault for letting them push us this far.
But it's time to push back. In fact it's long past time to push back.

There are more than enough studies to show that second hand vapor is 100% safe for those near by. One of the most recent was in Inhalation Toxicology Journel last November. There is more dangerous substances in regular air in every major city in the world than in second hand vapor. So do more research but don't put the bar higher than the regular air we breath everyday or you are just as bad as those who want vaping banned everywhere.

And that is why those of us who advocate vaping most places, also advocate vaping respectfully. We don't blow vapor in people's faces and we respect their reasonable personal space. Using the example of a few bad apples to advocate that vaping is the same as smoking and should be viewed the same, is ridicules. If we applied that same principle to all activites, people should be banned from driving to name just one activity where a few bad applies make life worse for the rest of us.

Can't speak for others of course, but one of the things that got me started with vaping was precisely the fact that I could vape where I could not smoke, which, where I live, is almost flippin' everywhere. So, yeah, I do vape pretty much wherever I want, and I haven't had a sngle complaint from anybody - only really interested questions from the curious. :)

Same here, but if anyone has a problem with it, I'm more than happy to put my egic away. I do try to explain politely what I'm doing, but at the end of the day, if you are in a public place and someone complains, it's better for all of us to be nice about it. They will come around in time...

I had a eureka moment today in the car. We need to stop calling them ecigarettes and stop using the word smoking at all in relation to vaping, that just plays into the negativity.

PVD (personal vaping device)
?
?
?

I think we as vapers and the industry need to come up with a standardized name that is not ecigarette or ecig and start speaking of our activity by that name.

It might be too late but the sooner we do that the better, right?

Perhaps the name of the forum could even be changed. We don't need the association with cigarettes at this point. I imagine the name could be changed but any searches for E Cigarette Forum could point to the new site.

What do you all think?

I'm not trying to be a douche, but the eureka moment you had has been discussed here about 100 times.

In the end, we are stuck with it and it is too late to change it.
The whole world knows them as electronic cigarettes, and we don't have any power to change that.

And yes, we have tried, which is why we started trying to call them personal vaporizers.
It didn't even stick here amongst us very well.

Also, it really doesn't matter what we call them, because those that don't want to see "smoke" don't care what they're called.
In fact, many that are opposed to ecigs are now calling them ENDS and they still want them out of sight and out of mind.

ENDS = Electronic Nicotine Delivery System

Vaping in public.

Encouraging people to start vaping....even non-smokers and children.

Some of these 'public vapers' need a soapbox/pedestal in a crowded shopping mall to advertise the fact they can 'vape in public and save lives'.

One member here said, "I will continue to Vape everywhere I go." Very bold statement....WILL...EVERYWHERE.

Vaping IS a better/safer alternative to smoking.

Better to target smokers. Not the whole community.

Thanks for vaping respectfully and advocating it. I dont think vaping should be viewed at like smoking though. I just completely understand the need for limitations much like speed limits. The crazy thing about the vaping community is that its full of such friendly and nice people but than its like split down the middle and the other half is people that have this "society owes me attitude". Ive met vapors that literally only vape just to go out in public places and make a point that they can smoke wherever they want. A simple guy like me, i just wanted to better my health and my familys. All in all imo i understand alot of people need their nicotine so bad that they will destroy everyone around them if they dont get it. But walking into a kids birthday party at chuck e cheese and chain vaping at 8 watts or blowing vapors in everyones face at disneyland is where the real ridiculousness is. After all, most laws that are in effect are because of the few bad apples right? It definitely should not be banned i dont agree with that. But if people are gonna be immature (wich they are), than their should be laws sorry but thats where i stand.

If I had a choice, I wish I was strong willed enough to quit completely. I am hoping I can use e-cig as an alternative.

I still do not feel that we should vape in places where snokers aren't allowed to. Young people might pick it up. Whether or not e-cig is safe, we still do not have a really have a reliable source mainly because there is no control group at the moment for this study.
