Why do we still call them "e-cigarettes"?

If someone asks me "What is that thing?", I usually reply with "It's an ENDS". (A term that someone here used a while back. Electronic Nicotine Delivery System) Sometimes I'll use ANDS instead (A for alternative). When they say "What?", I'll respond "It's a PV (portable or personal vaporizer)". When they say "Oh.." with a smirk usually, I'll say "No, it's an e-cig", and they'll usually say "Oh.", rather abruptly. At this point I can tell if they're interested in the thing, and the whole idea in general. Or if I want to spend any more time trying to tell them about it..

If you want hardly anyone to try a new idea, then go about promoting it the wrong way. If you want millions to use it, you'll have to go with the flow even when you know the terms used are not accurate. Maybe later on people will accept that the thing they are using is not a horseless carriage, it's an automobile. And then you can find an even better word like car.
A "better" word like "car"? But "car" is short for "carriage." By that logic, we'll all be calling them "cigs" in a few more years. Is that what you're saying?

outmoded term -> technical term -> new slang based on the old outmoded term
Horseless Carriage -> Automobile -> "Car"
Electronic Cigarette -> Vaporizer -> "Cig"

I have no problem calling it an electronic cigarette. At least that way people know what you're talking about. Just don't get me started on the term "analog."

I used that one the other day when a guy I work with asked me what I was "smoking" in my car. I had already told him months ago that I quit smoking with e-cigs. His actual question was "Are you smoking an e-cig in your car or is that ***? (illegal substance)". I think he was half joking.

I told him it's my ENDS, and then told him what that stands for, and then I showed it to him. He had already quit smoking after 2 heart attacks but he wanted to know if he could use one if he wanted to. I told him that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to use nicotine with his medical history but that they make juice with no nicotine in it.

When I started vaping, I had heard of and seen e-cigarettes in the store but I knew nothing about the more advanced devices. So, it was the term e-cigarette that got me interested. I guess, if they advertised personal nicotine vaporizers, I might have been curious too, but they don't.

I also don't mind e-cig, but I draw my line at smoking. If anyone asks me what I'm smoking I tell them I'm not smoking. If a smoker (friend) asks if I want to come outside and smoke I say "no but I'll vape".
I quit smoking, I'm a vaper now. Ecigs, ENDS, ANDS, PVs, mods. Call it anything but smoking.

Are we just gonna start arbitrarily making up abbreviations and expect people to know them? If so, I want in. I'm calling it a PELVIS. Persistent E-Liquid Vaporizer In Silver (assuming I'm using a silver mod.) If it's copper, well. You can figure it out.

I said no such thing. Please attribute quoting to those that actually said it. Thank you.

Well, I mean...you posted a link, and it said that within the link that you posted. There is no button for "A page linked to in a post by so-and-so said...", so the next best thing I could do was hit "reply" to your post, and then paste the text from the linked page in between the "quote" tags. Problem?

I think that they tried initially to brand it "personal vaporizer", but since the products were so new people were staying away from them so they went with electronic cigarettes. Now it seems that they are trying again to go with personal vaporizers and I hope they will succeed :), but somehow I doubt it.

Well of course I would give the terminology of the acronym, and if I knew the asker well enough, and she was female, I might use the 'male member' acronym instead, and then ask her if she wanted to try it out!

When asked, I like to call them a 'fake cig' or cigarette alternative because it makes sense to me. It was an airport security that referred to my vape pen first as a fake cigarette and I liked the way it sounded. Most folks aren't interested in fake anythings really.

I'm sorry, but I have to say no to calling it ENDS. That is the term the Anti's have christened E-cigs/PV's. I see ENDS and it brings to mind Glantz and his ANTZ cronies *shiver*

Anything but ENDS please! Their psychological mind game....as in END all nicotine and tobacco products. :(

I don't even remember what the particular thread was about, but that acronym got stuck in my head. As far as the 'Nicotine Delivery' part, that is the only thing in my mind that cigs and e-cigs have in common.

ends is the term that the world health organization ( powerful group) uses to describe what you call that which you vape leave it to health and just about every other group to come up with inside jargon I just call mine cheaper 1.00 a week DIY compared to $100.00 for a carton of smokes and you can be assured when I puff on it I make sure one and all can see my pure joy :rickroll:

I absolutely despise the term e-Cigarette. It's not a cigarette. Nothing more then a marketing term created for Big Tobacco products and the rest of us are stuck with it.

    What? That's not true.

The patent for the "Smokeless Non-Tobacco Cigarette". The next company to use the term "electric cigarette" was Ruyan, in the early 2000's. Big Tobacco had nothing to do with it.

Look up "personal vaporizers" and the first link that isn't an ad is too "ecigs"

Vaporizers for that 'other' purpose have been around for at least 12 years. Was taking a computer class at a local technical collage 12 years ago and just moments after we were warned to not look up porn or 'other' stuff on schools computers I glanced over at the screen of the young man beside me... Yup, and my second thought after the obvious "this guy is an idiot" was "hmm, I wonder if that would work with tobacco?"

Wish now I had pursued that thought further!

Not pleased with any of the terms we have available either. Have used 'vape pen' a few times if I'm not sure how some one will react then adjust to E-cig if necessary.
