This question may sound odd, but having read post after post about how many of us do not want to be associated with the term "smoking" and are trying to fight any pending regulations or bans that would throw vaping in with smoking, why would ECF use a term such as E-Smoking as the name of probably the biggest discussion forum on the net regarding E-cigarettes? There are many on here calling for removing the term "cigarette" altogether for PV's (which isn't likely to happen) but it just all of a sudden struck me funny this morning for some reason.

Perhaps it could be renamed to "General vaping Discussion" or something similar. Perhaps I'm just a nut job who has too much time on his hands and spends too much time thinking about things that don't matter. LOL

I agree with you, I would much prefer the terms "smoking" and "cigarette" were in no way associated with vaping.

That said.. I believe the main reason these terms persist in this "hobby" are to help make the connection for smokers, to help them mentally ease into the idea of "smoking" a better and healthier way.

I thought the same thing initially

Forums are a little different than your average web pages in that they have the capability to have HUGE strings of metadata in their thread titles (the words and phrases that keep your site at the top of search engines)

Calling this an E-smoking discussion might just insure that ECF is at the top of the search whenever those words are typed by people new to vaping.

A webmaster could enter a string of words on a page and try to be as thorough as he can but theres no need with a forum thats self generating like this one.

Hope that helps.

We are 3 years from when vaping just started getting popular enough to support a forum so lots of the terms we have now were not even thought of then. Vaping is not a word I dont think;-) It could be changed but then again we all know what it means.

Well I refuse to use tooting as Grim Green does. LOL! I'm cool with vaping.

I dont 'toot' and I dont use an electronic cigarette. I Use an atomizer Or nebulizer. It is some thing that helps me quit smoking cigarettes. I know that I still have to use the eCig tag when/if asked. I read something here, a person said that an eCig is as close to smoking as Nicorette gum is to chewing cigarettes. That I wil not forget.

You're close to correct. Actually, this board originated in the UK, sometime in 2008 I believe. the term vaping, as well as most of the other words associated with it were around in 2010, but much less so in 2008. Not to mention there will always be a bit of a difference in vernacular between the U.S. and the U.K. On top of that, with the amount of daily upkeep that goes into keeping a board of this size running I imagine the title of the general forums hasn't even entered into the Mods minds lately. They probably do well just to keep all us apes from wrecking the monkey bars. ;)

As to the name of your device, everyone is more than free to call it a personal vaporizer, e-cigarette, individual fog machine, whatever. The nice man who first came up with the technology due to his ailing father called it an e-cigarette though and it's been marketed as such ever since. We could all agree to call them steel bananas, but we probably wouldn't have found them if they had been called that, or anything else, not to mention our detractors will continue to call them e-cigarettes. We couldn't very well defend the technology if they yell that e-cigarettes are bad and we reply by saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with steel bananas. :D Personally I believe we need to take back the word and start making it a positive one.

Back when this forum was established there weren't terms like vaping yet and it was still compared to the other reference, when the subforums were set up it was late 2008/early2009 and It was never updated to remove the other word to replace it with vaping.
