For some ex-smokers there is no void, and for them vaping would be a step backwards (for a variety of reasons including, but not restricted to: nicotine use and inhalation of foreign particulates). For these folks, not vaping is a no-brainer and there are many amongst us who strive to get to this level.

For others, there is a void (e.g., glointhedark above). I talked with a fellow at a wedding a couple of weeks ago at length who fell into this camp - quit cold turkey, constantly battled smoking triggers for the past 2 years. His response to my vaping? I was fooling myself and cheating - it was no better than smoking in his view. I was, in his opinion, a kind of undead smoker.

When I asked whether he would consider it if his own cravings got to be too much, he said he'd rather smoke if it came to that - it was "more honest". Such is the pervasive brainwashing of the 'quit or die' culture... and the pride of those who have genuinely suffered to attain abstinence.

So, does vaping make an ex-smoker more vulnerable to becoming a smoker again? I don't think so in and of itself. I do, however, think that people like the chap I was talking with would begin smoking again because once you start to slide, you should at least have the dignity to slide all the way. At that point, it's more ideological than behavioural.

Ryedan (as if you can get people to do anything they don't want to). If I have a point it is that I had a Void. I bet you did too. That's why we smoked/vaped. This vaping fills that void.

LOL, I hear ya on the first part!

And yes, as I said if someone has a void and is having problems, vaping is much less of a risk than smoking. But not everyone is like that.

My wife stopped smoking eight or nine years ago. One day she just decided she needed to do it. She used one of the quit smoking drugs out there at the beginning, but stopped after a couple of weeks because she didn't need it. She has never had another cigarette and has no cravings that I know of. As long as she is OK, I would never suggest vaping to her.

Ry - My wife did the same thing (quit smoking long ago). She would no more vape than rob a bank. She is really interested in it though. She will try to guess what kind of juice I am using for instance and just today in the car asked me to blow a bit more her way to try and decide the flavor. (She was close - Mocha vs Espresso). If she wanted to vape I would get her started. Heck, if she wanted to rob a bank I would be all for it. She's my bunny!

For me, I was a non-smoker for about eight years and had no cravings and didn't want to start again. Then one day, others were smoking and I thought I'd try one and a few times doing that and I was a smoker again. It wasn't that I felt like I wanted to smoke when I wasn't, it was just when I started to backslide, I slid fast. This last (second) time, I was in grad school and I was having maybe 4 cigs a month, when I went out for a beer. I thought I had mastered the art of social smoking, But then my wife, who was an ex-smoker as well, started bumming cigs because I was, then bought a pack and that was all she wrote, So for me, it's not that I still crave cigs when I'm not smoking, but if I start, it's a fast trip back to being a professional smoker.

Ed - what can I say? Fill the Void. Vape On!

Yeah, the problem I'm having is that I seem to be having some heath issues with vaping. I have some heaviness and congestion in my chest, as well as a sore throat, My last bout with smoking was less than a year, after not smoking for eight. I started vaping last October, and haven't smoked at all since about July. So I'm not really sure what's going on. I've tried difference juices, some with VG only, but no luck. I'm thinking I may need to quite vaping.

Actually, it's VG that gives me that heavy congested feeling. I can't do more than 50% VG. It took quite a while to figure out.

This is my strong area.

Go back to an E-Cab. Stop trying to get more flavor and vape.

Remember when it was hard to not smoke cigarettes because they "hit" you so much better than the e-cig? Do that again. Exhibit some frigging self control once more and you will be able to enjoy the lasting time-out that a conservative mild e-cig can offer you.

Physiologically speaking there are genetic allele for serotonin receptors one being a long version and the other being a shorter version. In one study there was a marked difference in response to nicotine among people with the different types. Personally, I believe this is why some people cannot quit and others can. I.E. genetic related differences in brain chemistry/function.
