I was just under the impression that Line/Single Vertical Wick systems "needed" an open straw type set up to wick well, all those videos make a big deal about keeping the center channel of the SS mesh open.
for mesh definitely, especially if the device doesn't have a vent hole...but Lines do...good point though, not sure how cotton wicking would be effected if there was no vent hole, about the same I would imagine, sooner or later a vacuum will build if air can't replace the juice being wicked out, it wouldn't matter how good the media is at wicking, hmmmm...

We've got ketchup chips here, even ketchup sticks that are like mini chip-like french fries, pretty horrid.
