ANd quigs, thank you for the reply. I recall your issues with yarn taste and what not.

I was just under the impression that Line/Single Vertical Wick systems "needed" an open straw type set up to wick well, all those videos make a big deal about keeping the center channel of the SS mesh open.

for mesh definitely, especially if the device doesn't have a vent hole...but Lines do...good point though, not sure how cotton wicking would be effected if there was no vent hole, about the same I would imagine, sooner or later a vacuum will build if air can't replace the juice being wicked out, it wouldn't matter how good the media is at wicking, hmmmm...

Just stopped in rite aid and found this:

Don't care about the non sterile part, because the second you open a sterile package and touch it its no longer sterile

Was more concerned about the statement about absorbency and fiber length...what do you all think?

Just grabbed a chunk of my stuff and pulled it apart a bit:

Whether the strands are longer or not, who knows?...would it make a difference, who knows?...it's so, cheap try it:)

Did someone mention borscht in Vancouver? We've got ketchup chips here, even ketchup sticks that are like mini chip-like french fries, pretty horrid.

There's also a Polish sounding chain of bun sandwich things (name ends in -ski) that are far from Polish food. :D

The rolls of cotton with paper like that though, I dunno, that may well be strictly Canadian.

Has anyone other than myself tried good ol', plain ol' cotton string?

I'm now on day 2 with butchers string in my Ody (I boiled the string for over an hour, 3 water changes)...the sizing "taste" is finally starting to go away and it's becoming pretty good...I get the "ease of use" aspect of yarns/strings/twine but the sizing removal is to me, kind of a pain...we shouldn't forget cheese cloth though or gauze, it's sizing free and good to go right out of the gate like batton.

Horrid?...that hurts man...I consider myself a junk food aficionado and I love em' :D

as far as the borscht thing, my Polish grandma skipped town in '39 and my mom just added some of her recipes to her repertoire...I love a good beet borscht and sour cream with kielbasa...sit back later and listen to your arteries harden

That would just blow my mind if that batton was strictly Canadian, I mean we have to get it from somewhere...not a whole lot of cotton fields in Canada ;)

I dunno, most ketchup here is too sweet for me and I have to choose ketchups carefully. That recipe sounds pretty good, maybe you are accustomed to the spelling barszcz. Most I mention this too in the states say, 'I know that, you mean borscht'.

By skipped town, do you mean she went to tropical Victoria?

Oh, and my arteries must be pretty well hardened, that's why I don't need any real drip tips.

More like the tropical Prairies...you know things must have been tough during war time when you show up in Saskatchewan in the middle of winter with nothing but a suitcase and a land deed and say, "ahh, this is way better"

It was either Walgreen's or Rite-Aid.

Got mine at Walgreens. It works quite well as a wick material, however my only problem is my particular atty is a Line style and only has one wick hole, no other vents or fill holes. This presents two issues. First, its near impossible to re-fill with the cotton wick installed. Second, the lack of a vent hole I feel does create a bit of a vacuum effect in the juice chamber, though I must admit the setup seemed to work well for most 3ml tank.

Is that one of those Defcons hildi?...seems the Lines where made to accept cotton...every time I fill that thing or build on it I marvel more and more at the simple brilliance of them...now if they where 3ml, they'd be about perfect...maybe if it's not too much trouble, drill a fill/breather hole, it won't hurt it's performance, in fact it'll only make it better and I've read good things about those Defcons already...

Yup, its a Defcon. I've been thinking about taking your advice and adding a fill/vent hole. Honestly though, it hasn't seemed worth the trouble (little as it may be). I'm primarily a Reo user and what I'm really waiting for is the Chalice by Mark Bugs. I can totally see using the cotton in that baby. I kinda got caught in the initial hype over the Defcon, but haven't spent any time with it since the weekend I first got it. Not saying its a bad device at all, just saying I never got quite comfortable with it. I don't regret it as Chopper seems like a stand up guy and for the price its a nice way to jump into RBA's. I'm on the notify list for the Z-atty Pro, and will probably wait to see if I can get one rather than trying to mod the Defcon. Although now that I say the the Super-T Strata(?) does looks quite interesting.
WAY TOO MANY CHOICES!!!

hildi! you make it sound as if getting on the waiting list is all it takes! it does take a payment! why not see if the defcon can be coaxed to work like you want it to? if not, you're gonna be overrun by gadgets sooner or later!

well - i just looked at your sig!

The new DefCons from yesterday on will now come with a piece of a syringe installed in the top cap to eliminate the vacuum issue. The owner and myself worked this out via PM. They currently have a silicone cap that has 2 tiny holes on either side that were originally intended for filling the original product they were made for. The 2 holes aren't really open they are there to take a sharp needle and open them up to fill thru. SO, Hildi if your experiencing this problem, or you want to use one of these other wick items you can use a sharp needle to open one of the holes, Wasn't it you and I that had this conversation a day or 2 ago?

It was indeed, and I really do appreciate everyone's help. Again, its no knock against any one product or individual for that matter. Its just that I love my bottom feeders and honestly didn't feel like putting any more effort into this right now. Of course, that may/probably will change, but I'm lazy!
