I bought the wire from Stormy's Vapor Cellar but I didn't buy any wick so it must have been a free sample but they don't carry this kind of wick so I'm confused. Yes, it does burn. I like it better than silica because my juice tastes better. Wish I knew what it is.
That's #01 candle wick. You can buy it on amazon fairly cheap. Just make sure it's unprimed and lead free.
Off topic here I know but I got my piece of 500 SS mesh today from the Mesh Company as per BJ...holy crap!, what's with these guys, lol, buy 1 get 2 free?...first of all the sheet of 500 is huge...the 2 sheets of 400 they just threw in are the same size!...think I'm good for a while
so they throw in 400 as the freebie?

PS you are correct I just took the extra sheets out of the envelope and put them up to the light and they are 400. Luckily when I pulled the first sheet out it was the #500 and my testing has been with the #500.

What is the difference between #01 and #02 candle wick? I've seen some 24ply but no number as to #01 or #02.
One will have more holes per inch. I would have to have a microscope to figure it out. 
the 500 should be more dense, which means it will let less light through if you try to look through it, perhaps looks more shiny/glossy
Google cotton candle wick, you'll see the sizes that candle wick comes in, never saw any #ply as a cotton candle wick size before.
People here have used 1/0 & 2/0 candle wick, would have to know the actual width measurement of your wick to give a guesstimate on size. I have not seen any size chart which gives actual physical dimensions for the cotton candle wick.

As Cyrus said when you put it up to a window you can immediately see more light coming thru the 400, or lay it over some printing like a newspaper and you can read thru the 400 easier.
