Due to personal problems out of my control, I may or may not have borderline depression. Yes I was a smokey before hand, and my girlfriend hated the fact I was. But due to things going on at home, due to things out of my control, my mood was effected by nicotine in a positive calming way. I have friends who are 18+ who never smoke, but now and then when they seek me out for advice ask if they can use my e-cig to maybe help calm them down. They are more willing to listen. Nicotine and smoking are habitual to me, like, sometimes I get in the car and vaping just won't do it for me and I literally have to smoke because getting in the car, and lighting one up has just become complete habit to me.

I am 18, I started smoking at 16, smoking was "cool" then, but not cigs, because lord behold those things will kill you! I smoked cigars, but inhaled them and no one knew the difference. I was calm and loopy; yay me. Then it turned from wanting one because I wanted to feel the loopiness, to habit that I performed everytime I was in a bad mood.

I don't see vaping as cool. I wouldn't reccomend it highly for non-smokers to start, but at the same time, I found success in handling things when I had something I could rely on to put out a loose cannon when your own mind wants to literally explode.

We all have coping methods, if you like nicotine as one; it's legal, it's available, but I would truly tell someone to vape rather than smoke if they feel they want to start. How I see it? Let them. Encourage this over tobacco. Let them know the draw backs too, and just let them go ahead and vape to their pretty hearts desire. just my opinion.

I don't really find anything wrong with it. It's a personal choice, as was smoking. If a non-smoker wants to vape then good for them. It's supporting a industry and smaller business that we are striving to keep. Looking at it from a business or marketing perspective, we need to drive this industry if we want it to be successful. To grow we need to segment to different types of consumers and potential consumers.

I never smoked, but got into the world of vaping because of a project where I am making a smoke generator for a fire breathing dragon puppet.

I found that I enjoyed vaping as sort of a toy initially. Then, more out of curiosity, I tried some cigar flavored juice with 0 nicotine, since I always liked the smell of cigars. I found that the flavor was fairly weak, but did enjoy it. In my case, I found that I could use the e-cig as a substitute for snacking in my car on a long drive. So, it saves me some calories.

Long term, I suspect I will not continue it. Even though I found a purpose for it, the novelty may be part of the attraction. I have never seen any studies that compared any addictive quality when using nicotine vs. non-nicotine in e-cigs. It might be an interesting study that can only have been done with e-cigs, since there are no non-nicotine analog cigarettes. But, there may be moral issues to prevent such a study being done on humans, since you may introduce a long-term addiction. Perhaps an animal study would be just as effective.

So, there are at least a few reasons for a non-smoker to vape the non-nicotine e-cigs;
  • Fashion or coolness.
  • Enjoying the flavor.
  • Substituting for snacks.
  • Playing with the smoke.

But, one person mentioned a benefit for the nicotine to themselves. So, here are a few reasons to do the nicotine;
  • Medical benefit.
  • To be bad.

For the medical benefit, I wonder if other drugs prescribed by a doctor would have better results? I hope he looks into that. On the "to be bad" item, smoking analogs are worse, so that would be "better" in that sort of thinking. In the end, I think the nicotine "benefit" is quite unlikely to be seen as a benefit by non-smokers.

I would think that giving someone "Enchanted Turkish Delight"* is a moral wrong. So, I can see a clear and legitimate motivation to limit it by government. Perhaps a gradual reduction in the concentration of nicotine in analog cigarettes over a period of years would be a good way. And if it can be shown that E-cig nicotine is addictive then I think limits on juice nicotine concentration are also warranted.

So, I think that encouraging a non-smoker to use e-cigs with nicotine would be wrong. But without the nicotine, I don't see any problems.

* "Enchanted Turkish Delight" was a confection made by the White Witch from the story The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. She gave to Edmund, to encourage him to follow her. It was supposed to leave him craving for more of the confection that only she could provide.

I hear ya.. I wouldn't Reccomend a non smoker to start vaping, but at least it is safer than analogs, but why?? Maybe the same reason we started smoking in the first place.. (Shrugs)

IMO, it probably does have something to do with the reasons we started (and continued) smoking. At least it rings true in my case. I found cigarette smoking to be calming. In a stressful world, the temptation to self-medicate is huge. Although I quit cigarettes two years ago, the void in terms of the relaxation it provided is still there. That's why I am now awaiting delivery of my first vaping device and 0mg juice.

okay here is what I am looking at this problem. occasionally drinking some wine just for fun is perfectly okay while alcoholics are not. you cant just tell people drink grape juice right?
at the end of the day, if a person wants to do it then so be it. I would never encourage anyone to start vaping. but if they do want nicotine in their body I would tell them vape instead of smoke.

I love this standpoint. I definitely recommended to them to make sure they're getting 0mg juices so they don't start craving it more and more. Is it possible though that 0mg juices still contain trace nicotine in them?

I honestly think its stupid! Vaping is to help smokers quit cigarettes and for someone to pick up vaping for fun is gonna make the FDA classify this more as a recreational thing like hooka but with nicotine rather than an alternative to cigarettes like its supposed to be. When kids or non ex smokers start picking this up, the FDA will see this as a drug... Please don't encourage non smokers to vape.

I totally disagree. I started vaping to replace tobacco. when I'm not under stress, I vape 0-6 juice. When I have lots of stress, I vape 12. but that is me. However, I know several people who never smoked and vape 0 juice and are quite happy with it. They started vaping because they did not want to smoke, but did want the "actions". Intolerance of free choice just gives the FDA more ammo IMO... when it's proved that vaping is not a gateway to smoking, they have less ammo.
