Made some progress with my bee problem. Did a bit of free consultation on Next Door then continued on Google. Seems they are yellow jackets. They are the only species that will colonise mole tunnels. They survived the spray I dumped on them last night so I ordered a few cans of stuff that is designed for yellow jackets.
