LOL, lest anyone forget, my whole purpose for doing this thread, and staying invested in it, is to promote TC vaping as a safer alternative. Just like we preach battery safety, I am preaching temperature safety.

Actually this brings up another good point for TC. TC largely avoids dry hits, if your tank runs dry you just get an anemic hit rather than a dry hit.

Dry hits can top 1000f easily, making them especially bad in giving off nasties. I think it is fairly safe to say there are far more nasties in a dry hit than in smoking. Maybe not as big a list of nasties, but much much higher levels of the ones that are present.

I think I've had less than 10 dry hits in 5+ years (no TC). Lucky? Idunno...

Some folks learn to avoid dry hits, some folks dont. Most learn from the pain though, as in "I dont want to do THAT again". But a lot depends on the user, and a lot depends on the atty. Inexperienced drippers/squonkers are pretty vulnerable. Folks who build their own coils are vulnerable until they learn how to kill hot spots. Folks using older top coil attys are more vulnerable.

Its enough of an issue that I was really glad that a side effect of using TC pretty much eliminated it.

Data is data. There's lots of info in this thread for non-TC vapers to improve safety. The right build, eliquid, atty, and user can eliminate the production of aldehydes without TC as well as the same user with TC. It's the vaping without TC while you learn that may carry risk.

Isn't a dry hit occurring because the wick and coil are dry? So what you're really inhaling is burning cotton, which must have a different toxicity profile than our juice, and not for the better. Fortunately, most folks who experience a real dry hit will likely not continue vaping that way through the day, so the burning cotton exposure should be a rare event (hopefully).

@DPLongo22 , good point about the VG/PG ratios usually used back then with those top coil clearos.

Yeah - purdy nasty stuff (even when a wick begins to "turn").

I was never able to embrace those wicky clearos. I was still using cartos until the BVCs came out (the BDCs were yucky to me too). Once the newer ones came, I switched. I also was very happy when they switched THOSE over to cotton as whatever stuff had been inside had always made me slightly nervous.

Not enough to return to Marlboro Country, mind you, but just those nagging little thoughts...

I think that the large majority of stuff today is simply awesome. One after another, they just keep impressing me.

We're fortunate. Let's hope it sticks.

Agreed, thats the reason I stepped up and am doing this. I am collecting the data in a manner that is "sound" from a vaper's POV and presenting it freely. Folks can use this data to vape safer regardless of what they use. Scientists present data to/for a science audience, they need to learn how to present it for a layman audience.

Of course, a good TC rig automatically compensates for, and takes the worry out of, all of the 18 variables... ;)

Not to say TC doesnt have its own issues. You have to learn it, and learn how to calibrate your setup. But the end result is well worth it IMHO.

I say this as I am vaping a huge fused clapton at 395f, made from TI wire, with the juice control dialed back or I couldnt handle it. Bottom airflow wide open and top airflow closed off. And as strong as it is, I am not worried a bit about temp, havent bothered to even stick a probe in it. Starts out at about 65w and then levels off at about 36w. If I open the juice control, it just automatically gives more watts to achieve the same 395f, I just get a lot more volume of vape. This is "my" kind of MTL vape......

BTW, been vaping on this coil for a week now with my favorite "Peach Medley" juice. (rayon)

It's funny, Mike, because I always heard people talking about dry hits, and never actually experienced any until I began building (which was only 1.5 years ago). I fought it off, and may never have made the jump if not for the stupid FDA.

But now, as Phil once so eloquently put it, "I get it."

Keep the data coming, Mike. Data rocks. :thumb:

Nice build! All my "high mass" coils are in TC. Not so much for safety (but that's always nice) but I hate them in wattage mode. Too slow to heat, then too hot at the end of the draw. How does the Rayon wick in that deck? I'm using a fused Clapton (smaller than yours) with cotton and it behaves fine, no leaking, no issues chain vaping (although my jfc is wide open).

The rayon works great, but like most DIY there is a learning curve. It took me 3 wicks until I figured out the right way to trim the wick to keep the atty from leaking. In terms of juice flow capacity, it can handle way more than I can......

Hi,it only goes by wattage baby beast smok
  • Your "Mod" is a "Eleaf iStick Power" which is capable of TC control.
  • Your "Atty" is a "SMOK TFV8 Baby Beast" which is NOT designed for TC.
    • Your mod can handle TC if you chose a different atty, or built your own coils..
  • From what I can see there are about 9 different cartridges you can buy for that atty. Each with different resistances, and different number of coils.
    • Which one of these 9 different cartridges are you using?
    • Each one will probably yield a different temp at the same 55w.
It is impossible to predict your temperatures without actually measuring it with a probe, I dont have data on anything similar.

Remember, there are about 18 different variables that contribute to temperature in a Mod.

Not only are you inhaling burning wick material, but you are also inhaling the oxides that occur on the coil metal at high temps. Depending on the wire, some of that can be VERY nasty.

So share your tips on wicking the Pharoah, Mike.

Don't forget you're also burning the "gunk" on the coil and that has a toxicity profile, when overheated, that we certainly don't want to be vaping.

@Steamer861 pointed me to a vid, damn if I can find it now (maybe he will chime in), but watching that helped immensely. It was all in the positioning and angle of the scissors with respect to the juice hole.

And you are right about the gunk on the coils, dry burn being the worst, but even normal vaping burns off those nasties.

I'll look back in the thread, I remember Steamer posting that. I haven't pulled the trigger yet on the Pharoah but probably will this week. I usually just look at them and decide how to trim on my own, but why re-invent the wheel? To be honest, I'm perfectly happy with the Aromamizer V1 and V2 as well as the Bachelor and FEV V3. They all do stellar jobs at producing flavor and vapor and all are, relatively speaking, easy to build.

In terms of gunk, I track every re-build in a spreadsheet. That lets me see how often I've been rebuilding. Now I'm cutting the time between rebuilds down by a week or so just to avoid gunk problems. It's especially important for the Mrs. who has a tendency to keep vaping until the coil is no longer recognizable as a coil. She doesn't want to bother me to rebuild her tanks so now I just grab them and re-build them.

This thread made more work for me! :(

Speaking of, any links where i would start to learn about this process would be appreciated. I currently have 26g 316L ss wire and an Istick Pico. Where would i start ? I tried to wing it with disastrous results. Sometimes 220 degrees fahrenheit would be way too hot, and sometimes i could barely get any vapor at 450 degrees !

Btw, most of my RTA's are MTL tanks ( Digiflavor Siren, Taifun, KFL v2 ). I also have a Rose V2 which i never use, oh and the one with a geometric pattern as a logo ( set up for dual coils ) which i never use either.

Give me a day or two, I should be able to point in the right direction.
