Nicotine tests for work

how long do you take a break from nicotine content if you know you're going to be taking a "drug test" for work?

I say this because some companies here wont hire smokers, and they won't go by affadavit alone, they check for nicotine before hire.

Has anyone had any experience with this, or with the hiring process as the result of a test? tell us where you are and company info if you know it.

More and more employers are starting to test for nicotine use. There have been numerous threads about this topic on ECF. A search should pull them up.

The practice seems to be becoming more common at hospitals. The testing seems to be by employer or health insurance company policy There is a specific substance that shows up if you have nicotine in your system. No way to tell the difference between cigarettes, nicotine gum or nicotine from vaping.

Companies do this because they can get away with this crap in bad economy..
Have some bad news for them.
It's starting to creep back and they won't be able to be so picky for too much longer.

Back to the original question, how long do you take a break from nicotine (from whatever source you're using - e-cigs weren't specifically mentioned but are nonetheless relevant) if you know you have one of those tests coming up?

PS new users cannot post or respond or ask questions outside of New Members, so searching the whole forum doesnt serve any purpose for the New Users section. I personally went through dozens of pages in here and nothing was found on this. Also, responses and information changes with time, old posts are not necessarily accurate or reflective of current experiences.

i'm just glad my insurance company has tested me.... yet. Maybe if I have a major claim they'll do it and deny me coverage.

My wife was searching for a different life insurance policy for us. One of the better policies had a nicotine test as a provision. Working my way down to 0 nic. At 6 right now.

i would say 3 or 4 days for it to be out of your system,unless they are testing for like byproducts of nicotine..that can be longer i'm sure..

It depends

On if they are measuring for Nicotine or Cotinine (Cotinine stays in your system much longer)
On if it's a blood/saliva/urine test
Your starting level of nicotine

My employer/health insurance charge a hefty premium for "tobacco" users (their words), and they include "ecigs". They state there is the possibility of a random test.

tell them you ate alot of eggplant parmigeon .... eggplant has nicotine in it and so do potatoes

This sort of testing should be illegal, nicotine is NOT an illegal substance and any company testing/refusing to employ people because of it should be taken to court for discrimination.

Insurances are a different matter though.

This is just so wrong, but hey it's perfectly acceptable for me to fry my last brains cells with some Scotch.


Next thing you know, one will need a nic card from the doctor to keep their jobs.
